TO BE KILLED - 7/8/2021
STILL ALIVE! But will be killed anytime now!
FINAL MOMENTS FOR THIS SWEET GIRL PRINCESS, FKA VIOLA. Sweet and easily handled, Princess has not given shelter staff or volunteers a hard time. FOUND BY A BUS DRIVER WHO BROUGHT HER TO THE ACC which had adopted her out, Princess is not a princess. She was very thin and hungry. We can see how hurt she is over how she was thrown out by her people. Princess needs a patient, experienced person because she tends to hold on to her treats. Can we blame her? No one should try to take away treats from dogs. Please please share Princess. Your share could save her life! She dies today !
Princess possesses the face of a forlorn angel. One glance of her is all it takes to notice the heartbreak in her eyes, expression and spirit. Defining beauty with her bewitching and soulful eyes, adorably spotted flap forward ears, jowls which pout endlessly, and fashioned in a cow suit. Princess is 6 years old and as demonstrated in her video, as well as described by staff and volunteers has a very gentle, mellow and timid disposition. She is very low energy and seeks a calm, loving and reliable home. At the shelter she has handled herself impeccably. She does very well with other dogs. She has also lived in harmony with children. It appears she is broken hearted over being abandoned. She is being faulted for being possessive over treats and toys. Reading between the lines, and seeing her otherwise desirable qualities, we realize living with children ensures the likelihood of being taunted with high value resources which is now spelling out a grave fate for Princess. Her shelter notes reveal she is obedient, presents with a wagging tail, keeps to herself, is quiet, calm and timid. For any home which seeks an easy, mellow, and friendly companion pet, and one which is delightful to view, we recommend our Princess. She has been let down at least twice in her life which may well explain her sorrow. If you are interested in giving this pretty sweetheart a chance, willing to respect her resources and make her feel securely loved, please message our page. She is unjustly placed on the kill list and facing an impending death. Please message us if you are interested in saving her.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
BEHAVIOR RATING: New Hope only
RETURNED 😢 6/18/2021
In Princess's previous home she had presented with a concerning level of resource guarding that has resulted in Princess biting the owner. She has also been observed to demand bark, lunge, and snap when she becomes frustrated. These behaviors will need continued training to help extinguish these undesirable behaviors and safe management of her resource guarding. Princess will trade for items that should always be practiced, and items should never be directly taken away from her. Princess would do best in an adult-only home with an experienced foster or adopter through a New Hope Partner that can provide for her needs.

She allowed the handler to pet her. When offered a treat, her tail started wagging. She took the treat roughly. She was easily returned to her kennel without an issue.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only
Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:
No children (under 13): Due to Viola's nervousness and how hard she takes treats, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time
Place with a New Hope Partner: Princess has displayed a high level of resource guarding that will require an experienced foster or adopter through a New Hope Partner to safely manage.
Potential challenges:
Resource guarding
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:
Resource Guarding: Princess has displayed a concerning level of resource guarding in her previous home. Princess has bitten the owner on three occasions when guarding a treat, toys, and a bone off the street. She will growl, lunge and snap if someone goes near her mouth or attempts to take away items from her. Any future owner should trade her for high value items and should never take objects directly away from her. Please see handout on Resource Guarding.
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Princess applies moderate to hard pressure when taking treats. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Patrick's teeth make contact with skin). Please see the handout on mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Fearful/ Potential for Defensive Aggression: Princess presents as somewhat fearful and avoidant at the care center. In her previous home Princess has been reported to lunge and snap when in an aroused state =or demand barking. It is important to always go slow and give Viola the option to walk away from any social interaction. Princess should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Princess's choice to approach a new person or thing. Princess would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
