National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day reminds us how much we love our friendly, furry, kitty companions. In fact, we love them even if they’re not that furry — or friendly, for that matter! And since we’re responsible for their health and wellbeing (they can’t very well make an appointment to see the vet on their own,) we appreciate August 22 a lot! Cats still need annual checkups just like dogs; to make sure they are up to date on their vaccines, physical and other health maintenance checks, such as dental check ups.

More than just annoying summertime pests, mosquitoes are also responsible for causing heartworms in dogs and cats. In Florida, it is always mosquito season! Today, the best way to prevent the disease is to have your pet on a monthly heartworm preventative - even if your pet mostly stays indoors - and yes, you do have mosquitos in your gated community!
Heartworms are easily prevented but can be fatal. Treatment is only available for dogs and is often very hard on them.
Call today to make sure your pet is up to date on a heartworm test and their monthly preventative!

International Homeless Animals Day falls on every third Saturday in August and is honored with events every year. The International Society for Animal Rights introduced the day to spread awareness about pet overpopulation and has done meaningful work ever since, including saving the lives of millions of animals!
HOW TO OBSERVE INTERNATIONAL HOMELESS ANIMALS DAY
-Donate to a shelter
Shelters these days are more than just an animal drop-off and pick-up. Since the 90s, they’ve played a big role in spaying and neutering homeless animals and pets alike, mitigating dog and cat overpopulation and spreading awareness of homeless animals. And chances are, they could use your support. If you can’t donate financially, donate your time, and volunteer to help some puppies and kittens!
-Spay or neuter your pet
Let’s do some math. A female dog that isn’t spayed can produce 16 puppies in a year. If each of those puppies continues the line, that’s 128 puppies in two years. After 3 years, that’s 512 puppies, and this is why shelters can easily become overpopulated. Ensuring all pets are spayed or neutered is one of IHAD’s most important goals, so do your part and get your furry friend fixed if you haven’t yet.
-Adopt or foster.
With overpopulation often a burden on shelters, volunteering your home and your time by fostering one of their dogs or cats for a few weeks can make a world of difference. You’re preventing needless animal suffering and helping one lucky dog or cat have a much better life than they would have in a shelter. Even if you can’t commit to permanent adoption, fostering is a viable way for many of us to support shelters.

Check the Chip Day is celebrated annually on August 15. It’s that time of the year when we raise awareness regarding the importance of microchipping, which greatly helps in reuniting missing pets with their owners. In fact, every second a family pet is lost! With only one in ten ever being found! As per consensus, approximately ten million pets are lost annually. Microchipping provides peace of mind to pet owners as it confirms the safety of their beloved pets.

August 8 is International Cat Day — a day to celebrate one of man’s most common and ancient pets. They have even been worshiped as gods (we see you, Egypt.) Well, it is not surprising, Cats are one of the coolest beings on the planet: they are independent, inquisitive, adventurous, have an amazing physiognomy, and the power to heal by themselves — at least most of the time.

Assistance Dog Day is celebrated on August 4 every year. Dogs are a man’s best friend because of their loyalty and dedication, but assistant dogs take this to a whole new level. These dogs help people with disabilities or illnesses to navigate through life. They help where they can and perform simple tasks like guiding their owner’s path, helping fetch an item, and lots of other tasks. These dogs and their trainers deserve to be celebrated, and so this brought about Assistance Dog Day which aims to raise funds and increase awareness of the work they do. It makes up part of International Assistance Dog Week.

Lots of summer cookouts end with cool, refreshing watermelon. Watermelon is fun for pets; the high water content hydrates them and the glucose gives them energy. However, pets often swallow the seeds or eat the rind, and both can block the GI tract. To avoid GI blockages, cut the melon from the rind and remove the seeds before sharing this classic summer treat.

When was the last time you checked to see if your pet's immunizations are up to date? This August, National Immunization Awareness Month raises awareness and encourages everyone to make sure their pets are current on the necessary vaccinations for potentially harmful diseases. Many diseases can be easily prevented by administering vaccines, and thus, protecting your pets from unseen viruses. Take the necessary precautions with a simple call to your vet's office, and avoid potential harm while making sure your pets lead a healthy, happy life!

Wildfires often occur with little notice, which can make preparation a challenge. If you live in a wildfire-prone area, it’s important to create a safety plan for the two-legged and four-legged members of your family. You may only have minimal advance notice about evacuations, so planning in advance could be the difference between a successful evacuation and leaving necessary items behind.

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
