On most days the cows are my focus. They ARE my job. But yesterday they had to wait. Yesterday was about Liz. We traveled to the Blue Hill Fair to watch and support Liz at the horse show. So proud of her and her accomplishments with HER passion!

Very thankful for these animals waiting impatiently for yesterday’s move so we could watch Liz at her show in Blue Hill. Too often I fall into the trap of making our job the priority. Today was for Liz to be the focal point. So proud of her and her accomplishments!

This isn’t my typical post as we always try to stay positive. But this, this right here made me angry, sad and discouraged! I’ve watched my husband work on these fields for years to get them to high quality grasses for our cows. Hours, money on seed and time have all gone into it.

This morning at approximately 3:30 a.m. (neighbor saw it) someone decided it looked like a good place to do cookies and joy ride. This is just a small sample of where they drove. How disheartening. What may have seemed like fun to these people sure did cause anger and sadness to us. Please remember, what you see as a fun place to play could be how someone’s earns a living!

The cows will be moving tomorrow so for today I’m going to enjoy watching them laze about in front of my garden while I sip my morning coffee!

Today was cow/calf pasture change day. Crossing 52 cows with 35 of their calves on Church Hill Road is no easy task. Stress levels were high as a dozen calves decided they didn’t need to follow mom.

We want to thank everyone who drove by or got stuck sitting for their patience and understanding. The calves took a little more convincing than we had hoped but currently are all happily resting with their moms on the right side of the road!!

HIVE week at Leavitt and we were lucky enough to have a class visit. Aaron talked to them about grazing cows, soil, animal health and compost. I showed them horses, pigs and chickens. The finale was a lunch of burgers and hot dogs from our market - This is what charges us!

Ross to the rescue!! I typically do a no till garden but last year with opening a new business I couldn’t do the garden so needless to say, it needed to be tilled. Will and Aaron spent days with an old tiller trying to help me. This morning I mentioned this to Ross and as I’m weeding peas this afternoon he shows up - this is community- and I am extremely thankful and blessed with ours - Becky

They ran to the groceries, they filled up their carts,
They emptied the Tops and Price Chopper and Walmart,
They panicked and fought and then panicked some more,
Then they rushed to their homes and they locked all the doors.
The food will be gone! The milk eggs and cheese!
The yogurt! The apples! The green beans and peas!
The stores have run out, now what will we do?
They’ll be starving and looting and nothing to do!
Then they paused, and they listened a moment or two.
And they did hear a sound, rising over the fear,
It started out far, then began to grow near.
But this sound wasn’t sad, nor was it new,
The farms were still doing what farms always do.
The food was still coming, though they’d emptied the shelves,
The farms kept it coming, though they struggled themselves,
Though the cities had forgotten from where their food came,
The farms made them food every day, just the same.
Through weather and critics and markets that fall,
The farms kept on farming in spite of it all.
They farmed without thank yours.
They farmed without praise.
They farmed on the hottest and coldest of days.
They’d bought all the food, yet the next day came more,
And the people thought of something they hadn’t before.
Maybe food, they thought, doesn’t come from a store.
Maybe farmers, perhaps, mean a little bit more. ❤️

This guy is loving all the attention- we are aware he is out in the pasture alone and have been working to get him with the herd. If you see him, let him know his mama is waiting for him! He is safe and has food and we will continue to try to bring him in. Thank you for keeping an eye out. Please call if you see him outside of his large fenced playground!

A rare farm photo and some food for thought:

This is a picture of Aaron cutting wood on the farm.

Did you know many Maine farmers have to find another source of income to support their farms and families? Mind boggling, isn’t it? Especially when we all love the idea of the family farm and land to roam. What we often don’t realize is the cost to the farmers. Farming is a full time job all on its own but yet providing a nutritious, local product and being stewards of the land is not enough.

How do we fix this? I’m sure there is not one solid answer. However, we can all start by supporting local when we can. Doing the research, knowing what and who we are supporting. Giving back to those who give to us. Every little bit helps!

Side note - this can be said for our educators as well - we must try to do better!

Farmers wife brag: This calf had the luxury of being born this spring in dry, warmer conditions. Today, Aaron went to check the cows and SURPRISE, a calf was born. Seeing it on wet ground tugged at him a bit, even though mama cow will keep the baby warm. He walked over and put hay under and around the baby to snuggle it in, give it a warm dry spot. Asking him where the cute calf picture was all snuggled in he responded “I didn’t think of it, it’s not why I did it”

This is what you support when you support local farms. Farmers who care about all their animals and give them their best life while with us. And maybe next time, he will take a picture but we shouldn’t hold our breath cause it truly is not his reason ❤️

Today we took the opportunity to punch in some winter rye on some ground our cattle recently grazed. If this comes in well next year we will harvest the grain. If it’s mixed with the grass and clover. We will graze it.

The feeder herd is starting its third pass through this paddock. This year’s rains have caused some problems but overall our land has never looked better. Not every day is a win. But it does present opportunities for improvement.
