Dangers of some "boutique" dog foods, particularly grain free.
Please know that Summit is still seeing many cases of diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. DCM causes the heart muscle to weaken and the heart to become very large, which can lead to heart failure and death if not properly treated. The types of dog food that are suspected to contribute to this condition are sometimes referred to as "non-traditional diets." These are commonly grain free, but not always. The diets in question typically contain large ratios of peas, lentils, chickpeas, dry beans, potatoes and sweet potatoes. The exact reason why we are still seeing this phenomenon has not been pinpointed yet, but intensive data analysis is uncovering new information. Please read this recent article by board certified veterinary nutritionist, Lisa M. Freeman, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Nutrition) to learn about what you should be aware of if you choose to feed your pet a non-traditional diet.

This is a fabulous clip of a working Border Collie Search and Rescue dog finding and alerting during the earthquake rescues in Turkey. Well done! 😎

Great advice. ❤️
I’ve found in sheepdog training being truthful with yourself is key.
When I started training I was too reactive (v. proactive). As I began working with more dogs I had to constantly adjust my expectations, both of myself and my dogs.
Recently at the Bluegrass, while I was very pleased with my dogs in the qualifying rounds, I was disappointed with their turn backs in the final. It was their first time on the big stage and I should have practiced turning back away from home before the trial. Because they’re inexperienced it’s important to get a feel for how their training transferred on new terrain.
Instead, I was busy with the new farm and didn’t prioritize it. Because I didn’t prepare my dogs properly, they weren’t set up to succeed in the final; a tough lesson that will stay with me.
Facing your difficulties or problems is the only way to resolve them.
If your dog is slicing flanks, not stopping, not rating, not outrunning/driving properly, not shedding, gripping or another significant problem, if you give your dog time off sheep, there’s a good chance the issues will still be there once you start working again.
The same is true if you’re having difficulty with an aspect as a handler or trainer; problems generally don’t go away if they are ignored.
Seeking knowledge to address issues is important in life as well as with dogs.
You can change jobs, move states or buy another dog but your problems will be with you unless addressed with honesty—Learning is always more important than ego.
I have many weaknesses that I work on every day and I’ve found the more I try to improve personally, the better partner and trainer I am for my dog.

I don't brag on these two enough, and I really should. In April 2022, Rex and Kaz not only passed their Pet Partners' Evaluation, they both earned the coveted "Complex" rating. Pet Partners has the strongest testing criteria among the Therapy Animal registries. Statistically speaking, it is uncommon for an animal to earn a "Complex" on their first attempt, although that is certainly the level I look for and train for. Solid temperaments are what I seek in a partner, or seek to develop if it didn't come pre-loaded. We can train anything if we have that relationship, a bond that involves trust and two way communication. I hope you are building that relationship with yours as well. ❤️

Clark and Shelby discovering the joys of open fields in their first exploration of the big yard today. Freshly mowed agility fields with little equipment makes for a nice clear running field for nine week old puppies 😆.
Shelby and Clark enjoyed their first nighttime excursion to a new environment. New sounds and bugs 😆. I turned off the outdoor lights (except the farm light) to see how they would do in the dark, so it’s a lot darker than it appears. The iPhone 12 does a great job of adjusting for that.
And then there were two . . . not sure what Clark and Willa think about their brother and sisters disappearing, they seemed a little subdued here. . . it was hard to leave them today - four days is a long time in the life of an eight week old puppy!
Very cool video of Natchez walking with the youngest member of her new family on her eight week birthday. Both babies, but speaking the same language. Good foundations setting a good path. Natchez is going to have so much fun with the Scott family ❤️
Look at the cool heel work Catherine is doing with Lewis, who is eight weeks old today. What fun you will have together! 😁❤️
