Earlier this week, a 14-year-old boy named Elijah showed up alone at a small animal shelter in rural Iowa, holding a cardboard box with both hands. Staff members assumed he was dropping off a stray — but when they opened the box, they found a small, elderly dog wrapped in a baby blanket, with a note taped to the inside lid.
The note, written in neat but shaky
handwriting, read:
“Her name is Pepper. She’s 16. My grandma passed away last week and she was her dog. I promised I’d take care of her but my foster family says I’m not allowed to keep pets. Please help her find a new home. She’s very good. I love her.”
The boy explained that he had walked over five miles from his foster home to bring Pepper to a safe place. He didn’t want her to end up on the street or in a kill shelter. He had been feeding her with his allowance money and saving bits of his own dinner for her. But he said goodbye anyway, gently kissed the dog’s forehead, and left the shelter quietly before anyone could stop him.
Touched by his story, the shelter staff immediately made Pepper their top priority. They shared her story — and Elijah’s note — on social media. Within 24 hours, the post had gone viral, reaching millions.
Donations poured in, not just for Pepper, but for Elijah too. A local couple who had lost their own dog months before came in to meet Pepper — and adopted her on the spot. Even more remarkably, after reading about the boy’s act of love, another family reached out and began the process to foster — and potentially adopt — Elijah himself.
This week, Elijah was reunited with Pepper in his new home. He cried when he saw her, and Pepper wagged her tail and leaned into him like no time had passed.
Sometimes the purest form of love comes from those who have the least to give — and give anyway.

When I adopted Dora Mae, she was already grey in the face. The rescue told us she'd been adopted once before and returned for being too quiet. Still, she leaned into my hand every time I pet her. She was my dog; I had to bring her home.

For the first several months we called her "Dora the Doorstop" because she was afraid of everything and rarely left the couch. Then her true colors showed and she became a fearless social butterfly. Over the next few years, I began to realize just how special she was; she seemed naturally drawn to people and people just opened up around her, so with a lot of training, we became a certified therapy dog team.

Only a few months after got our certification, we were struck a blow, and Dora was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She had a splenectomy and began chemo, but we were told she would have 6-8 months left, at best. Still, with the blessing of the oncologist and the vet, we continued our visits - a therapy dog with cancer was something special in the nursing homes where other people were also fighting that terrible disease.

And against all odds, she kept going - eight months, a year, two years, and on... After about 2.5 years, we retired from nursing home visits and started visiting elementary schools and libraries where people could come to her, as it was less taxing, and kids loved her just as much - if not more - than the seniors did. She was truly something remarkable.

She finally lost the battle three years and 51 weeks after her cancer diagnosis, but we made a lifetime of memories and she taught me so much that I will always appreciate her legac

Today is going to be a different post. This is Gilbert. Gilbert started his life out as a service dog prospect. He was plased with the woman photographed here, for his first stage of service dog training. Turns out Gilberts personality is so happy go lucky that he could not be a service dog. He just loves everyone❤️ Turns out, The woman in the photograph loved Gilbert so much she adopted him and he became a member of her family. Sunday, Gilbert's time on Earth came to an end. Gilbert was fatally shot on Saturday in Minnesota, when a man posing as a cop entered his home and murdered his Mom and Dad for being Democrats. Gilbert wasn't a Republican or a Democrat....he was just the goodest of boys. We don't care what your political affiliation is, Gilbert didn't care what your political affiliation was, he loved you anyway. This was just evil. So, to honor Gilbert and his parents Melissa Hortman and her husband.... don't talk about politics, make someone smile, spread kindness, donate to charity, anything.....just spread kindness. Do this to honor a good boy who just loved his Mom 😢😢😢

RESIGNATION LETTER
From: Bronte
To: The Humans Who Keep Saying “You’ll Get Adopted Soon”

After months of smiling for the camera, tolerating loud puppies, and being described as “such a good boy” with no follow-through, I hereby resign from adoptable dog status.

I am 3 years old. 50 pounds. Handsome in a brooding, non-needy way. I like girl dogs best, mind my business, and have never once eaten anyone’s Crocs.

Despite this, I remain tragically unadopted. I’ve watched louder, messier, wetter dogs leave before me. Some didn’t even sit on command. I sit so well.

Please forward all future meet-and-greet requests to literally any other dog who enjoys being rejected.

Effective immediately, I will be moving into a state of quiet retirement, where I no longer get my hopes up or wag my tail for strangers.

Best of luck with your continued search for “the right dog.”
– Bronte

STAFF RESPONSE
To: Bronte
From: Literally All of Us

No.

You may not resign.

You’re too good, and we are far too emotionally invested in this saga. You will sit for the camera again. You will tolerate our desperate captions. You will be adopted, even if we have to walk around town with a sandwich board that says “ASK ME ABOUT BRONTE.”

So get comfy, but not too comfy.

We’re not giving up.
– BCHS STAFF and Volunteers.
