Today marks 2 years since we first opened our doors! 🎉🐾
In two years, we have helped almost 9000 pets. Yes, you read that right, 9000! That’s an average of about 12 pets a day! Dr. Dunn saw where the options in our community were lacking and she closed the gap for our pet owners. Because of her, we are able to help SO MANY pets every single day, and no pet will have to wait and go without care. We are so proud to be a part of this community and to be able to help in a time of need!

Let's Talk: Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)

At this point, you've probably heard at least some information regarding the Bird Flu outbreak in the U.S. and around the world. We are going to break down some facts for you today, and hopefully help you better understand some risk factors as well as keys to prevention.

What is Avian Influenza?
Bird flu is caused by a strain of the influenza virus (H5N1, H5N8, etc.) that predominantly affects wild birds, but domestic poultry such as chickens and ducks can also become infected. While cats are not as susceptible to bird flu as birds are, there are still precautions you should take if you live in an area with known bird flu outbreaks or if you have access to outdoor spaces where wild birds may be present. The virus spreads when infected birds shed it in their saliva, nasal secretions, and f***s. Cats usually wouldn't catch bird flu from other cats, but they could be exposed if they come into contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. With the rising numbers of cases being reported across the world, including at least one human death, it is imperative we help educate our community members on risk factors and keys to prevention.

Clinical Signs in Infected Poultry:
- Sudden death
- Swelling of the head, neck, and eyes
- Difficulty breathing or nasal discharge
- Discolored legs and feet
- Diarrhea
- Decreased egg production

Clinical Signs in Infected Cats:
- Respiratory distress (coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing)
- Fever
- Lethargy (lack of energy)
- Loss of appetite
- Gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea)

It's important to note that these clinical signs are not unique to bird flu and could indicate other illnesses, so it’s essential to contact your vet if your bird or cat shows any signs of illness.

Risk Factors for Cat Owners:
- Outdoor Cats: Cats that roam outside are at the highest risk of encountering infected birds or bird droppings.
- Hunting Cats: If your cat hunts birds or other wildlife, it may be more likely to come into contact with infected animals.
- Contaminated Environment: Cats that walk in areas where infected birds have been, or where their droppings are present, could become exposed.
- Feeding a Raw Diet: If you feed your cat raw poultry meat (chicken, duck, etc.) that comes from infected birds, there's a potential risk of bird flu transmission. If the poultry was infected with a bird flu virus, handling or consuming the raw meat could expose both you and your cat to the virus.
- Contamination with unpasteurized milk products.

Let's get the facts straight:
- Per the CDC, there have been over 149,964,521 birds affected from Avian Influenza, including wild aquatic birds, commercial poultry and backyard or hobbyist flocks in 623 different counties.
- Also in a report from the CDC, there have been over 11,000 reports of WILD birds infected with H5N1 in over 1,200 counties across the States.

Keys to Prevention and Protection:
- Avoid direct contact with wild birds and observe them only from a distance, if possible.
- Avoid contact with wild or domestic birds that appear ill or have died and call to report sick or dead birds.
- People and pets should not eat or drink raw milk or products made with raw milk.
- Ensure your poultry products are cooked thoroughly and practice good hygiene when preparing meals and handling raw meat.
- Do not feed a raw diet to your pets, as this can increase your risk of exposure to Avian Influenza and other bacterial infections to both you and your pets, as well as anyone else in the household, including children.
- Hunters who handle wild birds should dress game birds in the field when possible and practice good hygiene to prevent any potential disease spread. If possible, wear gloves, an N95 respirator and eye protection when dressing birds. Afterwards, throw away the gloves and facemask and then wash your hands with soap and water.
- Keep Cats Indoors: The best way to protect your cat is to keep them indoors, especially during times when bird flu outbreaks are reported in your area. This limits their chance of coming into contact with wild birds or infected environments.
- Remove bird feeders and birdbaths to reduce the chance of exposure to infected wild birds.
