Visit our website to see our dogs and download an editable application at savethetails.org. We are Save the Tails, Inc., a dog rescue group based in Loudoun County, Virginia. We pull dogs from kill shelters and find them homes. In our 10 years of existence we have saved over 900 healthy, beautiful dogs from certain euthanasia and made as many local families very happy. Please help us save them. Ri

ght now shelters are full of hopeful dogs in hopeless situations. With YOUR help, WE CAN save them! There is something everybody can do in the community. FOSTER a dog. Provide a temporary sanctuary in your home until a shelter dog can be adopted. This is imperative! Fostering gets dogs out of kill shelters. Fostered dogs are more likely to be adopted. Ours are good dogs; treasures in the ruff just waiting for a kind human to add the sparkle. Fostering is for us FREE and a guaranteed way to save a life. EMAIL [email protected]

ADOPT a dog. Our dogs come to you healthy, up to date on vaccines and preventatives, dewormed and microchipped. Most are already housebroken and ready to go. When you adopt you save 2 lives; the dog you adopt and the one that gets his space at rescue. Our adoption fees are a fraction of what you would pay to buy a dog plus all of the fees go back into the rescue to help save more dogs. EMAIL [email protected]. DONATE. Your donations are critical to our rescue. Every once in a while a dog will come to us heartworm positive, or with an embedded collar; with unforeseen medical costs or in need of a little extra training. These things are costly but a standard part of any rescue. Donations save lives. We are a 501c(3) nonprofit, your donations are eligible for employer matching programs! VISIT savethetails.org to make a tax-deductible donation. VOLUNTEER. Do you have a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday to spend in air conditioned/heated comfort with an adorable dog? Our volunteers are our dogs' advocates; they tell potential adopters about the dog they are handling, plus they get to give belly rubs and treats to our dogs and puppies. We also need transporters to help move our dogs from shelters to foster homes, organize fundraisers and more. EMAIL [email protected]

We need you to save dogs! Shelters are full of wonderful dogs who, without our intervention, don't stand a chance. Save the Tails is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your donations are tax deductible and eligible for employer matching programs.

🚨URGENT in MD🚨 CASH is urgent for space and must leave by FEB 11 at 6 PM or will be PTS

CASH (A554437)
3yo female
66 lbs

When Cash first came into the shelter, volunteers described her as calm in her kennel and walking well on leash. The same feeling of overwhelm that likely had her quiet in the kennel, now has her very overstimulated and she’s often jumping and panting. Her leash walking has turned into one long game of tug due to leash biting. I am sure Cash is a great pup based on her early write-ups. She will thrive with decompression and patience.

Initially, Cash walked on well on the leash with only moderate amounts of pulling once she’s done her business and enjoys catching up on the smells in the yard. Cash may be housebroken as once outside she quickly took care of business. Cash appears well fed and perhaps had a stable living situation - she was an owner turn in, but that’s all we know. She enjoyed silly play with a couple of ball toys in the big run in the field and really started to open up during play. She takes treats gently and allowed me to touch her ears and mouth and paws as we were playing. Cash has an award-winning grin, which was so nice to see after her initial timidity in her kennel and is my second-favorite look that she gives, the first being a stoic pouty lip that I’m sure is reminiscent of some boxer or bulldog heritage.

Cash is not only beautiful, but would do well in many homes. Come meet Cash and see for yourself how wonderful she is! You'll be glad you did!

FAQs:🙋‍♀️
🔸Why are there so many urgent dogs? PG County has a breed ban prohibiting its residents from owning terriers (pit bulls). They have few options and must be rescued or adopted by other communities.
🔸Can I adopt outside PG County? Yes, yes, yes!
🔸How many dogs can I meet? 2 per visit
🔸What’s the adoption fee? There’s a scale based on weight of the dog (large dogs being less expensive) See shelter website.
🔸 How can I foster an urgent dog? You can apply through a rescue partner. Post your interest under the dog you’d like to foster.

This is so sad. Please share these dogs. Most local shelters can move the dogs into foster if they’re pressed for space, but they are overwhelmed and in PG County you cannot Adopt America’s Nanny dog. Heartbreaking, yes, but you can help, SHARE the post. Go ADOPT, or if you want to foster we can put them in our rescue.

IF YOU FIND A HYPOTHERMIC ANIMAL
DO NOT:
1. Feed the animal
2. Submerse the animal in warm water
DO:
1. Get the animal out of the weather and inside
2. dry off the animal
3. talk to the animal
4. stroke to stimulate blood flow
GET TO A VET IMMEDIATELY!!!
If you feed a kitten with a temp below 97 you can KILL it!
If you warm them up to fast you can KILL it!
If the animal is frozen to the ground DO NOT PULL IT OFF!
Get LUKE WARM tap water and pour it around and under the animal. that water is warmer than the snow and air and is going to feel like FIRE to that animal's nerve endings. Think about stepping into a hot tub and how hot it feels. Again you DO NOT want to use hot water. Then Immediately dry the animal off, wrap it in a towel, shirt etc. and get to the nearest vet office.
Steady and slow is rule of thumb. A vet can treat the animal for shock and hypothermia using a series of injections and warm IV fluids and an incubator.
Losing ears, tails, toes or a leg is workable. Damaging internal organs isn't.

Here's a fun little fact about our furry pals: while dogs can devour just about anything, there are certain foods that can turn them from happy pups into not-so-happy campers! 🚫🍫

Take grapes, for instance. You might think they're a healthy snack, but they're actually a big no-no for dogs. Just a handful can lead to kidney failure! 😱 And don’t get me started on chocolate—because, let’s be real, if dogs could have a sweet tooth, chocolate would be their first choice! 🍫 But it’s a serious danger.

Xylitol, often found in sugar-free gum and some peanut butter, is another sneaky ingredient that can wreak havoc on a dog’s health. It drops their blood sugar and can lead to liver failure! Yikes!

So, next time you're enjoying a snack, remember to keep those toxic foods away from your pup. They may give you those puppy-dog eyes, but trust me, it’s better to stick to doggie treats. 🥳🍖 Let’s keep our furry friends safe and sound!
