I am forever grateful to horses and the opportunity to share my life and livelihood with them, and to provide my Tranquility Equestrian farm family and my students with everything I know to be able to set them up to be the best people and horsemen they can be!
School always comes first, but to be able to have a farm family and learn from horses makes someone’s life experience extra special and, in my opinion, more complete!

An Open Letter to my Daughter’s Teacher
~ by Angie Mitchell (a mom in Texas)

Today my 7 yr old daughter came home from school a bit sad. When I asked why, she said you told her that if she kept missing days, she would get bad grades. I understand where you are coming from, I’m sure it’s frustrating for you when she’s gone, but she’s missed 3 Fridays since the beginning of the year to compete in something that at 7 years old she’s found to be her true passion, Eventing. And so you know, there are not many 7 year olds that event. It’s difficult. It’s mentally and physically demanding. And she works harder than any kid I know her age because she enjoys it, and loves her pony, at a level beyond words.

It was interesting you told her that today, because in her backpack she had her report card with 6 A’s and 1 B. She also had her standardized test scores, where she scored above her peers in every category. But most interesting was the sheet of paper you also sent home, listing out what I should expect of my second grader, what I should work with her on. And as I read it all I could think is how much my daughter is benefiting from all the hours she’s spending at the barn preparing for her competitions. How much she is learning from all the hours, day in and day out, she practices. And finally, how my expectations of her are so much higher than yours, because of her riding.

Under the “Life Skills” portion it states she should be zipping zippers. She can put on a pair of leather half chaps by herself. Zipper level: Expert. It states she should be able to snap snaps and button buttons. She can put on her show shirt and jacket, a stock tie, breeches and her helmet. She can also tack up her pony by herself and apply bell boots, open front jump boots and brushing boots, and she knows which ones to use when.

It says she should know how to wash and dry her hands. Not only can she do that, but she knows how to clean and condition her boots, bridle and saddle, bathe her pony, pick his feet and apply hoof polish, organize a tack trunk and shovel and sweep manure from the grooming bays.

She’s supposed to know one parent’s phone number, and her parents names. She knows the names of the 30+ horses at the barn. She knows what size girth to use, and when to use a running martingale. She knows what hole to put the jump cups for a 2’ course, or a 2’6 course. She also knows how to change her diagonal, turn down centerline, make a 20 meter circle and how to ride a transition.

There was a section for “Following Directions” where it says she needs to be a good listener. She listens to her trainer give her a jump course consisting of 10+ fences, which she has to immediately remember, and then jump. It says she has to remember multiple directions at a time “such as brushing your teeth, putting on your shoes and moving your backpack.” She can remember and ride a dressage test, cross country course and show jump course in one day.

It says I should play “Mother May I” with her. Everything her pony does, is because she’s asked and she knows she has to ask correctly. She weighs 50 lbs. He weighs 700. She has spent hours learning how to not only ask, but listen, when she wants something from him.

It says she should have responsibilities, such as packing her lunch. She can not only feed herself, but knows how to feed and care for a pony. She can groom him, put on his blanket, braid his mane and brush his tail. She can scoop his feed, throw his hay, fill his water buckets and lug all 5 gallons 100 feet from the hose to his stall (though I do have to help her hang them.) She knows he always comes first, even when she’s hot and tired or it’s cold and raining.

But most of all, she’s learning about hard work. She’s learning how to succeed, and how to fail. She’s learning patience and compassion and best of all Love. Love for her pony, Love for her sport, Love for learning.

Dear Teacher, while I know school is important, I also know there is more to life than what can be learned in a classroom. These experiences aren’t just teaching her the things that come from a book, but things that are making her a better human being. When she looks back on her life, she won’t remember missing those 3 days of school. She will remember her last show on her beloved pony Champ, her first ribbon at a USEA show, and how she and her Best Friend spent 3 days in the rain together doing the thing they love the most, being Eventers.

Sincerely,

The proud mom of a horse loving little girl

We got one, you guys! McCoy Ace in Lexington near Ballpark Road was SO so wonderful, kind, and helpful in making this possible.
I really wanted to support them, so I got a few other necessary items for the farm as well, and I will be be using this location as often as I can.
You should, too!
Thank you very much for the contributions towards it! It was definitely a major investment, and may take a little to pay off, but I am very relieved to have this for the kids and animals.
Please use the farm for your water or anything else if you need to and don’t have power yet!

Update for Monday 9/30/24:

Still no power for the farm and surrounding areas!
Thanks to a kind family, I was able to use a generator last night to top off all of the waters and stock up on water for a day or more, so that was amazing and so so appreciated.
I know this event is a little inconvenient, but it’s also been so beautiful out and the animals are totally fine. I do have to do a few extra things to make sure they’re comfortable, and it’s a bit sticky in the house 😅 but overall, it’s ok.
It also makes me happy to be a place that the kids can come to hang out and spend time with horses, and continue on with lessons as normal, since there’s no school.

*******
Parents, Horse Owners, Friends:

I want to invest in a generator for the farm, which would make it so in another event like this, all animals and kids would still be able to have what they need here.
The farm could also be a place for anyone in our farm family circle or area to come to get water, cook or store food, or just come for a bit.
I’m not going to start a gofund me, there are always so so many people who need things, and especially now, but if you would like to participate in the purchase of a generator for the farm animals and kids/families, I have a lead on one available as soon as tomorrow!

Please don’t forget, lessons and participants in our camps, competitions, and other events are how Tranquility Equestrian stays open!
I LOVE what I do, and put everything I have back into the farm and the kids;

• My goal is to have happy and healthy horses and affordable prices to teach future generations of kind and correct little horse people, to share everything I know, and to provide as many learning opportunities as I can to the kids to make excellent future horse people •
But I cannot do it without you!

Thank you for all of the check ins on the horses, to those that helped with the debris and clean up, and for the offers to help 😊 🐴
I will do my best to get a generator so the horses (and anyone else) can have water if an event like this occurs in the future!

Hello Tranquility Equestrian families and friends! I wanted to check in while I am in town before I have to go off grid again.
Power is still out for us here at and around the farm, but we are ok! Lots of trees and power lines down around us, but we were super fortunate and only had a few trees/branches down in the pastures, nothing major on the fence lines, and all of the animals braced for the storm while it was at its worst and have been unphased since.
There is no internet/power/cell service, so getting in touch with me or the farm without coming by may be touch and go.
A neighbor has city water, so I am going back and forth over there to get the troughs filled.
Hopefully everyone has fared decently well through this major weather event, and we will all be back to normal moderately quickly!
All lessons are still going to be held as planned, and I will be in touch if there need to be changes.
October Lesson Payments are DUE and reminders have been emailed, so if you have not, please send in payment for October Lessons! Thank You!

Here’s the ugly truth of what people don’t tell you about going professional:

You will work 13, 14, 15, 16+ hour days. Not for a lavish vacation, but to put fuel in a truck and a sheepish dinner on the table.
365 days a year. Rain. Snow. Christmas. Funerals. Hot and humid you are there, you are working.
People will tell you your six figure horses will never be nice enough and those three/four figure ones will never be rank enough.
The biggest shows are the loneliest places. People support you until you become a threat, then they will try and break you down.
You will see death and hardships. A lot of hardships.
You will want to give up.

Why don’t people tell you this? Simple. We wouldn’t have an industry.

What people don’t tell you is why you don’t give up:

When that quirky horse gets it.
When you get that first big sale, first client horse, first investor, or the first time your barn fills up.
When those few people believe in you and you start getting phone calls of people being sent to you.
When a training client strikes it big.
When you finish a day and look back at a farm and business you built.

Why don’t people tell you this? Because there’s not a grand enough word to describe that feeling and that’s exactly why we are here.

Happy Gotcha Day to Emmerson and Indie!
Indie is Emmerson’s first horse, and has been such a cool mare to have at our farm!
She has the most beautiful colors that change with the seasons, and the sweetest personality to her humans. This past year she learned not only how to be an English horse, but also how to jump and is now showing in the crossrails division while jumping higher at home. She has been a great lesson horse as well, and has taught many other kids valuable lessons and skills.
She is so so smart and will do (almost) anything for you, as long as she gets a cookie and love afterwards!
Congratulations and well done to Emmerson and Indie this past year with all of your accomplishments! We love you, Indie girl!

Happy Gotcha Day (a little late) September 1st to Taco and Shasta!
It’s been so fun to watch these two grow into their roles and watch their personalities come out.
Taco is definitely a wild man, and has a very sweet heart underneath his tough guy attitude.
Shasta (nicknamed Sister) is a visual learner and somehow brave and spooky at the same time 😂
They have both been great teachers to the kids and are very well-loved!

So often, I hear my students say things like “I can’t.” Or “I’m not capable.” Or “That’s for someone more talented, rich, younger, etc.”

Chin up, Buttercup!

Time to believe in yourself!

The first step to positive thinking is believing in yourself. You have to believe that you can achieve your goals, no matter how difficult they may seem. You are the only way you can even come close. No one is going to come along and do the hard work for you.

First, focus on the good. When you focus on the good things in your life, it will help you to see the world in a more positive light. Make a habit of noticing the good things that happen to you each day, no matter how small they may seem.

Think positively. When you think positively, it will help you to attract positive experiences into your life. Choose to think about the things that you want, not the things that you don't want.

Use mindful meditation to visualize your goals. Take some time each day to visualize your goals. See yourself achieving them in vivid detail. This will help you to stay motivated and focused. You can do this when you first wake up in the morning or right before you go to bed.

Positive thinking is not enough. Start moving. You need to take action towards your goals. Don't wait for things to happen. Make them happen. One step at a time. Chip away at it.

Crap will happen. Don't give up. There will be setbacks along the way. But don't give up on your dreams. Keep believing in yourself and keep taking action.

Practice gratitude and live in the present moment. Don't dwell on the past or worry about the future. Focus on the present moment and enjoy the here and now. You will have more to be grateful for.

I believe in you!
