Gertie says her goodbyes ..

I Just walked outside to find the pack gathering… before I opened the door I noticed them all sitting and they were all facing the small building across the drive…. That is where my pets have been buried for my entire time living here and there is a St. Frances statue there…..they already know she has left and they are very likely seeing her over there right. They are saying farewell . They do this every time we lose family…

As we consider all of our friends part of our caring dog family … we do share far more than others do when we experience a loss or heartache. And today that’s as true as it’s ever been… if my experience and loss can educate others and save just one animal… then I will share.

Processing the loss of Gertie… because she was such a young, vibrant and healthy girl…has been a gut wrenching process. Why did this happen? It was not expected or explainable by the doctors.

I have just spoken to the surgeon who performed her autopsy this afternoon… Gertie’s cause of death was a small gastric ulcer which had perforated her stomach causing sepsis and death.
I have learned something new here…. She had zero symptoms of this until her heart failed. Her recent vomit did not contain any evidence of blood. She had no temperature. The pain she had to have felt did not stop her pure zest for life. Her body had tried to seal the hole the ulcer created, but it had become like a tear making it larger….and infection had set in. Sepsis had taken control.
Even when treated a perforated ulcer gives a 20-30% survival rate.

Rare? Yes. But we hope all of this info helps someone to never experience what we have….our baby will come home tomorrow.💞

This morning we unexpectedly lost one of our precious pack…. Sweet Gertie passed before the ER vets could get her into surgery following what began as an episode of nausea, pain and vomiting at 3am this morning…..her X-rays revealed nothing….the ultrasound showed seven strong heartbeats…the bloodwork was initially good but, later turned suggestive of decline and then a repeat ultrasound revealed that one pups heartbeat had stopped and another was now in distress…sepsis was a concern. An emergency C-section was necessary, but as they were setting up for surgery…. at 11:30am she went into cardiac arrest and all were lost. Seven hours seemed like one.

There had to have been an unseen medical problem to have caused this outcome. For my Gertie, I must know what caused her heartbreaking loss…. so they will do a full evaluation today.
Hug your babies and say a prayer for Gertie and her wee ones.

Actual photos which are proof of the damage neutering young dogs actually does to their physical development…. We can’t measure the damage to their immune system and psyche.
STOP spaying / neutering before they are adults….. 2 years!

Well we are another day without power …. And it looks like we won’t get it anytime soon. I know they are working very hard to get everyone back on grid.
In the meantime, my yard guys came and made my day! A little normalcy in my front yard! From topsy turvy to perfect for us!

Hope everyone survived the storm intact! We have a mess here at the kennel. Many of our big trees are down…. And others stripped of foliage. Power lines are lying in the front yard and the driveway is closed off…… Including the back way. One large outbuilding is cut in half taking the old faithful Suburban with it…… But we are all intact! Blessed.
