When we got our first puppy, we had NO idea what we were doing-even though we had tried to educate ourselves. We are passionate about helping our families start off on the right foot, and providing a few items to make the transition a bit easier. Our “Go Home Bags” are a bit different with each litter, but we have a few staple items we always make sure to include!

Have you ever heard of Sound Desensitization?
What about Conditioned Emotional Response or CER?
A large part of our curriculum at Our Little Farm Life Doodles is implementing both of these important methods.
Each day, we INTENTIONALLY expose our puppies to new sounds. Some of these sounds include lawn mowers, fireworks, thunder storms, different generas of music, bells, knocking, farm sounds, sirens, cupboard doors shutting, and so many more! We try and think of not only sounds they may hear regularly in their new homes, but also sounds they will rarely hear. Our goal is to expose them to a large variety of sounds, so they are calm and confident in most situations, or recover quickly from uncomfortable situations.
We also like to add a Conditioned Emotional Response (CER). We often do this with some of the more common sounds (thunder, fireworks, lawn mowers), or sometimes just in general when they are hearing new sounds to create a positive association. We give them their meals while exposing them to these sounds which helps create an automatic positive response when the sound is heard.
Both of these methods are super important and help your puppy be confident, happy, and well adjusted.
These puppers now know how to use the doggie door and can go in and out as they please. While Chris was mowing, they were all outside-playing and walking around. Instead of retreating to their “safe space”, they chose to hang out by the noise. We then worked on adding a CER by feeding them their lunch. You can see these cuties outside, hearing the lawn mower and rooster crow, and just as happy as can be eating their lunch.

We always feel a tremendous amount of gratitude to be a part of these little ones journey, but I’m feeling the feels a bit extra right now.
Maybe it’s because this is Josie’s first litter. There’s always something special about a first time mama….
Maybe it’s that Josie is our first mama that we got as a pup with the intention of breeding….
Maybe it’s because we have 2 beautiful litters right now that we studied genetics for, tested for, and meticulously chose studs for, to better the breed and create stunning puppies….
Maybe it’s the light that Josie and Gingers litters have brought into our home during a somewhat gloomy and mundane time of year….
Life is truly such a miracle and we feel so blessed to experience this miracle with each litter. I feel beyond blessed for the healthy puppies that we have right now. I feel extremely grateful for the amazing breeders that really care about breeding the best puppies and have shared their knowledge. I feel so blessed that Chris and I have had the capacity and resources to create an amazing program that truly helps raise incredible puppies.
We love these sweet babies and I can’t wait to see them grow and progress!

Have you ever heard of ENS or ESI?
If you’ve followed our account for a while, you probably have, but here’s a bit about it and why we are so passionate about it!
Early Neurological Stimulation, or ENS is a program that was originally developed by the US Military. It was called the Bio Sensor Program, or more commonly known as the Super Dog Program. It is a series of 5 exercises….
Holding the puppy with their head up
Supine position (holding the puppy on their back)
Holding the pup upside down
Tactile stimulation (rubbing between their toes)
Thermal stimulation (placing the puppy on a cold surface)
These exercises are done for 3-5 seconds each on days 3-16 and are designed to introduce small amounts of stress in a safe and controlled way. This helps kick the puppy’s nervous system into action earlier, and has been found to improve dogs ability to cope with stress. It can also have many health benefits including increased cardiovascular performance, stronger heart beats, and stronger adrenal glands, which means improved immune systems and greater resistance to disease.
We also do Early Scent introduction, or ESI. Each day we introduce a new scent for our puppies to experience. Although not every puppy does scent work as an adult, it is known to increase neuroplasticity. Why not do everything we can to help raise the best puppies possible?
We do all we can to give our puppies an advantage in life! We record each puppys daily reactions to ENS and ESI to help our clients find the best puppy for their family. We feel that these things are essential to raising amazing, healthy puppies.

One of my favorite things to teach our dogs is manners. Commands are SUPER important, and they need to know them. Did you know it’s just as important to teach them manners? You can expect certain behaviors from your puppy with out having to ask or give them a command.
Here we have our 7 month old F1bb Labradoodle from Charlys last litter. We open her kennel door and she is expected to wait there until we give her our release word, “ok” regardless of the distractions. Mily has been doing this since she was a tiny pup, and we have been able to add distance, time, and distractions. When we open the crate, we don’t have to tell her to stay or wait. We do the same thing when we open our doors to let them outside ir inside. They are expected to wait until they are invited in or out.
Is she perfect 100% of the time? Nope. But having foundational manners really help living with your puppy more safe and enjoyable!

We work super hard to get our sweet puppies used to a variety of sounds so they can be confident in this big world. Each day we introduce them to new sounds in a comfortable environment to help them become desensitized to startling and undesirable sounds. As you can see, Milly and Daniel are playing outside during a thunderstorm. (Kid you not, there was thunder like I haven’t heard in a long time. It was SO loud.) when the thunder sounded, they were startled, but they quickly resumed play as if nothing had happened. It’s ok for puppies to get startled. Let’s be honest-most of us will startle when there is a loud noise. What we don’t want is them running and hiding or showing signs of fear or distress. Acknowledge the noise, and move on! I’m so proud of these amazing babies!!!

Does your dog bolt or stay when you open your door?
Just as important (if not more) as teaching your dog commands like sit and stay, is teaching your dog manners and that certain behaviors are expected with out you having to give them a command.
There is nothing more scary than having your dog take off when you leave the door or gate cracked for a second.
Though they are not 100% perfect all the time, we teach our dogs to wait until we give them the “ok” command before getting out of their kennels, leaving our house, coming into our house, and going out the gate.
This morning I was laying a few pieces of sod and carrying them one at a time from the truck to our front yard. We had Charly, Shakira and Nala out, and it would have been a PAIN to try and open and close the gate between each piece of sod-while carrying sod. Instead I was able to leave the gate open and go back and forth with out the dogs darting out. They are such good girls and waited patiently for me to come back. *I always make sure I can see them and correct them if they go to exit. Even though they do really good, I don’t like my dogs being out of sight with the gate or door open, and only do this when I can supervise them.*

At Our Little Farm Life doodles, we are passionate about our puppies getting the best start we can give them!
From day 3-16 we do Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), which is a series of gentle stressors applied at a time of rapid neurological growth and development. Puppies that have participated in ENS have shown an increased capacity to handle stress, and have better problem solving skills. In addition to the important psychological benefits, ESI also provides health benefits like stronger immune systems, improved cardiovascular performance, and better overall health.
Early Scent Introduction (ESI) is also done from days 3-16. In this “program” we expose our puppies to a new scent each day. This increases their potential to be better companion, service, and/or therapy dog.
Additionally, we chart each puppy’s weight daily from day 1-14, then weekly thereafter. This insures they are growing properly, and can detect issues like fading puppy syndrome. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like seeing their puppy’s growth chart?!?
We do all we can to help our sweet puppies be well adjusted and make the transition into their new homes more smooth and successful!
