Birke jumped me out of the frame a few times this weekend- he’s such a wonderful youngster and I had such a blast with him and all of the other riders Windridge Farms & Services and Sydney Elliott Clinic . A nice respite from a trying few weeks!

I will be getting a donation of hay to my farm in Leicester delivered from my family and dear friends in Vermont who are driving it down sometime next week. Please send me a message or text me if you are needing hay, include in that message how many horses you have and the amount of bales you’d like to get and we will try to make a rationing plan for when the hay arrives as well as send everyone a pick up date.

So many emotions and such utter exhaustion this past week- I feel so sad for everyone that lost farms, homes, family, pets. I feel so sad for the beautiful towns of WNC that we have enjoyed with our family over the years and now they’re gone. Sad that people are still stuck in unreachable areas with no food and water, animals as well. I also am overcome with gratefulness that we still have our farm and horses and our family is all accounted for. I am so grateful for my husband who supports me at the farm day in and day out when it’s not even his endeavor. I’m beyond heartened by the family and friends both horse people and not who have been supportive during all of this, bringing us grain, water, checking in, showing up, sticking around..the community of support is amazing and also a reminder that we need each other, we need people..animals are wonderful but it’s your neighbor and your friends who you’ll need to turn to when s**t hits the fan.
I am also just physically and mentally exhausted; being a farm owner and caring for 13 horses is hard enough, add a natural disaster to the mix and there is no break, no “mental health day”, no “I need a minute”..there were multiple days I didn’t even get to see my own children this week because I was schlepping water buckets to horses for 12-14 hours a day and couldn’t get home safely. You show up and do the work no matter what. That’s hard. And I hope everyone that boards their horses knows that, that is a priceless commitment you’re getting to your animal. I am so sorry for all of the loss in our beautiful community and am hopeful to be a part of the recovery process in any way possible. Take care of each other, say Thankyou, check in on your neighbor, be good.

This is a late post but congratulations to my student Catherine Kemper on her purchase this summer of our sale horse “Tu Ari”. They continue to train weekly with me and I’m
continually impressed by this pair and their progress! I have to say all of our sale horses have gone on to do super things and I love hearing about their successes 🫶

We have FOUR youngsters waiting to find their new people right now at our farm and I’m really looking forward to matching them as well as Catherine and Tu Ari were paired!

Meet “Pierre”!
One of our newest and, I think, most special additions to our sales horses. Pierre is a Canadian Sport Horse/Clyde cross standing at 17.2. He is just 3 years old, but has the temperament of a 20 year old so don’t let that scare you away. He is grounded, calm, not spooky and the most adorable gentle giant you’ll meet 💙
Pierre is WTC, safe on trails, has been around cattle, dogs, kids. Take him any direction you like; foxhunting, husband horse, dressage mount! He is barefoot with beautiful, big feet, kind in the herd and loads in the trailer.

What a fun lifetime horse someone will be getting with this guy…your very own Budweiser horse!

Coming up on almost TWO years of life at Christmas Farm! I’ve had a boarding business at different stops on the map for almost 10 years but this farm is special..spending some evenings out there this summer, you can just feel it in the air…so lucky to have landed this space with all the special people around me in it!

When trying horses (I think) it’s a nice gesture if not just common decency to thank the person who showed you the horse and let them know whether or not you’re interested. Obviously, if you leave without having a conversation about purchase, I’ll assume you aren’t interested. But, having been a horse shopper myself, I will ALWAYS reach out with a follow up or let them know right then and there my thoughts and thank the trainer/owner for their time. Amazing, how often that doesn’t happen..

Susan Hancock is a USDF Certified Instructor/Trainer, USDF Silver and Bronze Medallist. With over 40 years experience teaching and training to the FEI levels. She received the esteemed USDF Region 9 Teaching Excellence Award. Susan is dedicated to rider education to promote a learning partnership with your horse. Her lessons consist of a variety of exercises to help each individual pair reach their goals. Many of her students have earned their Bronze Medal and working toward their Silver Awards. Susan is positive, straight forward and encouraging.
