Today is International Ear Care Day! That means it is good time to remind everyone of the signs to look for when your pet is having ear issues. Ear Issues can be caused by allergies, ear mites, trauma, and in some cases genetics. Breeds prone to ear issues are those with longer, floppy ear such as cocker spaniels, basset hounds, and beagles. If you suspect your pet is having an ear issue please call to make an appointment.

Today is World Spay Day! We can not stress enough how important it is to have your pet spayed. For dogs there is a massive health benefit to having spayed before their first heat cycle as it will nearly eliminate the changes of developing breast cancer. Dogs who are not spayed are also at risk for pyometra which can lead to death if an emergency spay is not performed. Besides the health benefits, there are the benefits of decreasing the over population of pets.

Our office now carries a new supplement for muscle support called Ursolyx. This new supplement is a once daily chewable that helps improve muscle health, exercise peformance, and agility. Ursolyx is made by Virbac, who also makes Movoflex for joint support. Both products can be used at the same time. If you know your dog has ingested chocolate please call and make sure you know the type of chocolate (milk, dark, baking, etc) and how much you believe the pet ate. In some cases it can just cause GI upset and in others it can be a serious health issue that can lead to death.

Charlie came in for his yearly vaccines! As noted before Charlie belongs to our office manager’s mother and has been coming to our office since he was a puppy. You can see in the photos below how much Charlie has grown in the last year! Charlie loved all the girls in our office and was such a good boy for his vaccines!

February is designated as National Pet Dental Month and it's a good time to go over some tips for brushing your pet's teeth. This can be an enjoyable experience for your dog or cat once they are used to it. Please make sure you use pet specific toothpaste as they can't use the same that we use since they don't know to rinse and spit. We offer CET Toothpaste in our office and they come in a variety of flavors like Chicken, Beef, Malt, Seafood, and Vanilla Mint. Did you know that today is National Golden Retriever Day? This wonderful breed traces roots back to the mid 19th Century in Scotland. Their roots are a cross of Water Spaniels and Retrievers to make a dog that could travel long distances in marshlands with a soft mouth for retrieving. Over the years they have evolved into one of the most family friendly dogs. They are known for their calm and tolerant personality that makes them wonderful family pets. They also love to be in groups with other dogs and are one of the easiest breeds to train. Goldens can be on the bigger size when looking for a pet and they shed more than any other breed. Below is a picture of Cassie, who was owned by our office manager and is greatly missed by him and his family. Bob is also holding his mother's Golden, Charlie in the second picture. Did you know that today is Change a Pet's Life Day? There are many ways to change a pet's life for the better, but the main reason for this celebration is to get more people adopting, sponsoring, or fostering pets. The first Animal Shelter was founded right here in Pennsylvania in 1869. If you are prepared to welcome a pet in your home you would not only change the pet's life but would change yours as well. As mentioned even if you can't adopt right now, fostering, sponsoring, volunteering, or donating to a local animal shelter would help as well. Below are some things you can do to celebrate.

With the freezing temperatures please remember that it is illegal in Pennsylvania for a pet to be tethered outside in temperatures before 32 for longer than 30 minutes. With temps in the single digits and below, pets should be kept inside and only out for bathroom breaks. Our rule is always that if it is too cold for you, it is too cold for them. Barc Andre Fleury had his first exam with Dr. Winfield today. As you can see he loved our tech, Billie! Sports fans out there will understand his unique name. We think it is absolutely perfect! It was a pleasure meeting Barc Andre today and we can’t wait to see how he grows and develops!
