That is not dirt or a flea you are seeing. That is a tick that was found a 4 week old kitten. Some ticks can even be smaller than that. Please make sure your dogs and cats are on year round heartworm, flea and tick prevention. We still routinely get dogs that test positive for Lyme Disease. Having your pet on a tick prevention and vaccinated for Lyme Disease is still the best method of prevention. If your pets are outside please check all over their body for any ticks. Pay special attention to the head, neck, and ears.

Today is National Black Cat Appreciation Day! For centuries people have been superstitious about black cats as there was a feeling they bring bad luck. Cat owners know this is not even close to being true as black cats are loyal and loving pets. Sadly, black cats are 1/2 as likely to be adopted from shelters as the centuries old stigma about them being bad luck or evil remains today. That is part of the reason this day was created. It was to make people aware of these cats being passed over when it comes time to adopting. Please feel free to share photos of your beloved black cat and if you are looking to rescue a cat from a shelter be sure to look for a black cat that was likely passed on by others.

****Update: Thank you all for sharing! This sweet doggie has been reunited with her family!****

Please share! This dog showed up on our porch about 15 minutes ago. It has a broken tie out still attached and has a collar with no tags. No Microchip when scanned. We have the dog at our office and if no owner is found, we will have a shelter pick up! The dog came down Connellsville Street from Nickman’s to our office.

Welcome to DOGust 1st! August 1st is the universal birthday for all shelter dogs. The vast majority of dogs in shelters are strays who don't have a known birthday. We celebrate August 1st as a birthday for all of the shelter dogs across the world. In Fayette County we have several shelters that have dogs that need their forever home, or if you can't adopt, they can always use volunteers or fosters.

Today we celebrate National Mutt Day! This Day was set aside to celebrate those special dogs that have a little bit of everything that makes them special. Mutts are mixed breeds dogs and they are often overlooked when it comes time to needing a home. The majority of pets in Animal Shelters are mixed breed and this day is to celebrate them and to get more people interested in adopting these wonderful dogs. One of the benefits of owning a mixed breed is they tend to have less health issues as their genes come from a variety of breeds and not just one that may be predisposed to certain medical conditions. Help us celebrate by sharing pictures of your mixed breed/mutt! You can also celebrate by adopting, fostering, or donating to your local animal shelter.

Today Dr Wingfield and our entire staff had a lunch and learn meeting with Pumpkin Pet Insurance. If you have been coming to our office you may notice pamphlets for Pumpkin in our office and at times a QR Code on your receipt. There is a 14 day wait period for Pumpkin once you have a plan, but your pet does not need a exam with a doctor prior to getting the insurance. If you are interested in Pumpkin Pet Insurance please see the link below, or ask our staff for information.

Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day! Over 1000 house fires a year are accidentally caused by pets in the home. Below are some tips to make sure your pets, family, and home are safe. Check with your local fire department as they sometimes have window clings that you can list how many and the type of pets in your home. It is also recommended to have fire drills with your family so everyone knows what to do and where to go in the event of a fire emergency.

Please keep an eye on your pets today and in the coming days during fireworks. More pets are lost on this day and the next few days than any other time of the year. If it all possible, keep your pets inside in a safe place. Anxiety can be severe enough they can hurt themselves or get out of areas you think are secure.

What better way to beat the heat than with an Ice Cream Bar? A massive thank you to Virbac and their wonderful rep, Alicia for providing our staff this sweet treat. Virbac has been a great partner with our office and provides products like our top joint supplement, Movoflex Advanced. If your senior pet is having issues getting around ask our staff about Movoflex Advanced. Virbac also makes the toothpaste for pets that we recommend using to brush their teeth as well as other dental products. Thank you again Alicia.
