What a wonderful weekend at The Property Shop Dressage & CT Schooling Show Series with Kayte Ulibarri Suresh and Dhreya. Dhreya had 5 wonderful rides this weekend and scored over 70%!! It was so fun to watch her put into practice everything we have been working on. And of course Finn is the most perfect partner. Thank you to Lindsay O'Neil and Ella O'Neil for letting us borrow her. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💙💙💙

FROM A PARENT:
One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money for your kids to ride horses?" Well I have a confession to make, I don't pay for my kids to ride horses.

So, if I am not paying for them to ride, what am I paying for?

- I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don't.

- I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are "too tired" to go the barn but go anyway.

- I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined.

- I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body.

- I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates.

- I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don't get that score they'd hoped for, but still have to work hard in the grading.

- I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals.

- I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight.

- I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships.

- I pay so that my kids can be in the arena instead of in front of a screen...
..I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for horse riding, I pay for the opportunities that horse riding provides my kids with to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!

When we rush our horses in their training, we aren't expediting their fitness or building muscles faster - we are breaking them down and rushing to a place that will require more veterinary intervention, more alternative therapies, more time off, more risk of injury, more wear and tear on the fragile structures, and a quicker end to the riding career and soundness of our equine partners.

You cannot rush fitness, you cannot rush collection, suppleness, relaxation, it's impossible. Wherever you do rush and cut corners, you will end up with holes and issues in other areas of your riding and the overall health and welfare of your horse.

Don't want to take the time to teach your horse to collect, and instead just force him into a false frame? Well, you're going to be stuck with fixing the slew of problems that come with the tension that was just created.

Don't want to work your way up the scale to create true endurance and stamina? You now risk your horse pulling a muscle or injuring themselves from overexertion and being pushed too hard for too long when the body simply isn't ready for that workload.

Don't want to get a saddle fitted to your horse? Your horse will suffer the consequences of altering his posture and way of going to alleviate the pressure and pain caused by something that isn't suited to his build, even going so far as risking injury to yourself when he can't pick up his feet enough, causing a stumble which can be catastrophic.

Don't want to do boring small jumps to build up to the larger ones? You risk your horse not being able to find a good take-off spot, knocking rails, refusing and even crashing through the jump. You will also make the horse more nervous, anxious and again, tense and sometimes unwilling to jump again.

Don't want to waste time working up the scale of collection to achieve the proper head set without force? Let's just throw a harsher bit in his mouth, maybe tie the nose shut with both noseband and flash to get him into "frame". You've now lost all relaxation, the wrong muscles are activated and depending on how deep you yank the horses face in will determine if he's even able to swallow. Tension throughout the jaw and neck translate all the way to the hind legs, so zero collection is possible, even the slightest bit of engagement and lift of the back cannot be achieved.

Rushing will lead you nowhere except to more problems that could've been avoided had you taken the proper time for development.

How a horsewoman knows she is rich:

I am rich. I have $15 in my checking account and a golden mare in the barn.

I am rich. I have a car that mostly works and enough gas to get to the barn every day this week.

I am rich. I have boxes of pasta and generic sauce in my pantry and enough hay to feed my horse through the winter.

I am rich. I have enough old coats and sweaters to layer up and stay warm while I do barn chores.

I am rich. I vacation by camping with my horses and going to cheer on my horse riding friends at horse shows. Sometimes I even play too, and spend $1000 to bring home a fifty cent ribbon that I will treasure more than a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower.

I am rich. I have tools: duct tape and baling twine and the know how to fix just about anything with these tools.

I am rich. I find joy in making my own things, making do, and making right. I have a 20 year old saddle, a 35 year old body, and the wonder and joy of a 6 year old child learning that a horse can give her wings.

I am rich.

My wealth is not measured in dollar signs but in horsey snorts and nickers. My riches aren't spent on electronics and fancy clothes but are shared with my human and four footed friends.

Next time someone finds out that I have a horse and says, " You must be rich to afford that" I will smile, and agree.

8 essential tips to help keep your horse cool when temperatures soar

After one of the most lacklustre springs in recent memory for the UK, there are rumours that temperatures are set to soar, so here are Horse & Hound’s top tips on how to cool down a horse when things get hot.

1. If your horse is normally stabled at night and out during the day, consider reversing his turnout times to avoid the hottest temperatures and the worst of the flies.

2. If your horse has to stay out all day, ensure there is somewhere he can escape from the direct sun, such as some trees or a field shelter. If there is no permanent shelter, you could use some sheeting to rig up a safe, temporary area of shade, so the horse has the option to choose the shade if it wishes to.

3. If your horse is out during the day, a light coloured fly rug or summer sheetwill work better than a dark coloured one for keeping the horse cool – white is best for reflecting the sun’s heat. A rug that has a loose weave material will allow the horse’s body heat and sweat to escape more than a tight weave, but it will also provide less effective protection from flies, so there is a trade off to consider. Wetting the rug while it is on the horse will further improve its cooling properties, so hosing the rug down while it is on the horse multiple times a day is worthwhile in the hottest temperatures.

4. White areas on the face and heels are most commonly affected by sunburn because they have less skin pigment and hair coverage, so remember to apply suncream to these areas. A fly maskwith UV protective properties may also be helpful.

5. If your horse is stabled, setting up a stable fan out of reach of your horse may help to increase airflow and have a cooling effect. When your horse is out of the stable, spray the walls thoroughly with an insecticide to discourage stable flies from lingering there.

6. If you have to transport your horseanywhere, leave as early as possible to avoid travelling in the heat and reduce the risk of getting stuck in traffic during the warmest part of the day. Professional transporters in the UK are not allowed to move horses in temperatures exceeding 30°C and it is recommended that private owners follow the same rules.

7. If you are transporting your horse, make sure all suitable windows are open to keep fresh air flowing through the horsebox. If you have a roof vent, then opening only the rear section while you are moving helps to draw the hot air out of the vehicle while cool air can enter through the windows. On arrival, the roof vent should be opened fully, but also consider whether the horses will be cooler standing on the lorry or trailer out of direct sun (consider dogs left in hot cars), or whether they would be better off outside in the shade.

How to cool down a horse quickly

8. If you suspect that your horse may be suffering from heat stroke, put him in the shade and pour considerable amounts of cold water over his whole body, allowing the water to run off or evaporate without scraping off the excess liquid, as this is how best to cool down a horse quickly. You should also offer the horse water to drink every few minutes. If the horse appears wobbly (ataxic) then try to keep the horse walking in the shade, while continuing to apply cold water. If signs persist, contact your vet as a matter of urgency.

To say I may have overcommitted myself this weekend would be an understatement.

Woke up super early to go xc schooling with Allie Lahr & Cat. We had a lightbulb moment and found an easier way! Yay!

I took Sarah Ervin’s Grazi out for his first xc experience. He loved it! He’s so game & willing to do it all. He’s going to be so incredible.

I am so blessed to have found Carol Parker & The Arabian Legends. It’s an honor to be trusted with the likes of El Shihab +++// (he earned his last points this weekend!!) and Cherry Limeade. They both had a fabulous (HOT) show both days this weekend and put in some truly lovely work, with scores up to 69%!
