August 13th Update:
On August 10th, 38 pets were transported from Caldwell County to Asheville for spay/neuter surgery at the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance facility in Asheville. The pets were on their way back to Caldwell County on August 11th when an issue with the vehicleβs front left tire caused the vehicle to crash into a concrete median barrier. The driver of the vehicle was airlifted with serious injuries and a second individual sustained minor injuries. We send heartfelt wishes for a full recovery to both of these individuals.
We are grieving with the families of Coco, Buffy, and Hammer, the three pets who did not survive the crash. We are also grieving with the family of Rav, a pet who passed away at a veterinary facility where she was being treated following the accident. The loss of a pet is always tragic, and even more so in this case because the families of these pets were being responsible and loving pet owners by providing spay/neuter surgery for their pets. Six dogs and one cat remain missing at the site of the accident, and we are hopeful that they will be found and reunited with their owners. 26 pets were examined by veterinarians following the crash and then returned to their owners Wednesday evening. As of our last update from the ASPCA, one pet is still being treated at a veterinary facility in Asheville.
Caldwell Humane Society would like to thank the staff of the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance for their efficient and compassionate response to the accident. Their dedication to the animals is evident in their continued efforts to locate the missing pets using professional pet trackers. We would also like to express our deepest appreciation to the McDowell County Emergency Management Services, the McDowell County Animal Shelter, the McDowell County Sheriffβs Office, the McDowell County First Responders, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Crestview Veterinary Clinic, and the many bystanders who assisted at the scene until the ASPCA response team arrived. Their efforts helped to save the lives of pets who were out of the vehicle following the accident.
The accident occurred on Interstate 40 west of Old Fort, NC. Anyone who sees an unattended animal in that area is asked to call the McDowell County Animal Shelter Hotline at 828-652-6643.
