COURTESY POST FOR A CHS VOLUNTEER- PLEASE SHARE - If you want further information on these dogs, please comment on this post.
My mother has two dogs who are very bonded. On June 30th, she was admitted to the hospital unexpectedly and will now need to move into a memory care facility. I have been boarding the dogs as I try to find someone who could take the two of them together. I will have to take them out of the kennel soon because it has been several weeks and it is very expensive. I am trying desperately to get them placed. I would love to not to have to separate them. But, at this point if we can find a home for one of them, we will be happy.
They are up to date on shots and on heartworm preventative. Both are spayed. I have done everything I know to do. Both are so gentle and sweet. It would be devastating to separate them โ€“ they have been through a lot together - which is why I have been asking everywhere I know to help. I would take them myself but we live in the city without appropriate space outside for them - and my husband and kids are allergic so they can't live indoors. I am in a tough spot. Hazel is a walker c**n hound around 5 years old (we think). The Pup is a pit mix around 4 years old (we think). No history of biting or aggression. Very playful and loving. Thanks for any help you can provide.

August 13th Update:

On August 10th, 38 pets were transported from Caldwell County to Asheville for spay/neuter surgery at the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance facility in Asheville. The pets were on their way back to Caldwell County on August 11th when an issue with the vehicleโ€™s front left tire caused the vehicle to crash into a concrete median barrier. The driver of the vehicle was airlifted with serious injuries and a second individual sustained minor injuries. We send heartfelt wishes for a full recovery to both of these individuals.

We are grieving with the families of Coco, Buffy, and Hammer, the three pets who did not survive the crash. We are also grieving with the family of Rav, a pet who passed away at a veterinary facility where she was being treated following the accident. The loss of a pet is always tragic, and even more so in this case because the families of these pets were being responsible and loving pet owners by providing spay/neuter surgery for their pets. Six dogs and one cat remain missing at the site of the accident, and we are hopeful that they will be found and reunited with their owners. 26 pets were examined by veterinarians following the crash and then returned to their owners Wednesday evening. As of our last update from the ASPCA, one pet is still being treated at a veterinary facility in Asheville.

Caldwell Humane Society would like to thank the staff of the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance for their efficient and compassionate response to the accident. Their dedication to the animals is evident in their continued efforts to locate the missing pets using professional pet trackers. We would also like to express our deepest appreciation to the McDowell County Emergency Management Services, the McDowell County Animal Shelter, the McDowell County Sheriffโ€™s Office, the McDowell County First Responders, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Crestview Veterinary Clinic, and the many bystanders who assisted at the scene until the ASPCA response team arrived. Their efforts helped to save the lives of pets who were out of the vehicle following the accident.

The accident occurred on Interstate 40 west of Old Fort, NC. Anyone who sees an unattended animal in that area is asked to call the McDowell County Animal Shelter Hotline at 828-652-6643.

Volunteer Needed:
Caldwell Humane Society is seeking someone to take over a volunteer position that will soon be vacant due to relocation. The position involves trapping feral cats in Caldwell County for a once per month spay/neuter clinic. Must have sincere love for cats and willingness and ability to go above and beyond for the plight of homeless feral cats of our community. They have no one to depend on except for the generosity of strangers.

The position requires you to set live traps the day before clinic. The trapped cats will need to be covered to help keep them calm. You will take trapped cats to your home and keep them in a dry, temperature controlled area. The cats will remain in the traps the entire time you have them. They will need to have food and water placed inside the traps. Paper liner in trap will need to be changed as needed. You will transport the trapped cats to clinic the next morning. When cats return the following day, you will pick up trapped cats. They will need to have food and water placed into the traps and paper liner changed as needed. They will need to be kept overnight for observation in your home in a dry, temperature controlled area. You will return cats next day to area where they were trapped and release them. The traps, food bowls, and covers will need to be washed and sanitized after each clinic. Must be able to lift and carry up to 12 pounds. Average volunteer hours per month are 6-8. You will have training.

This is a volunteer position, but knowing you have saved homeless kittens from being born into a life of hunger and disease is all the payment you will need!

Caldwell Humane Society thanks Regina Dawkins for her efforts on behalf of feral cats in Caldwell County. Please comment here or email [email protected] to reach Regina Dawkins for more information about this volunteer need.

Here are some of the adorable faces from today's spay/neuter transport return. Our first transport since March....it was a fitting celebration of National Dog Day! This is just the first step in working through our appointment backlog from April, May, and June. We do not yet know when we will be making new appointments. We're as anxious as you are to spay & neuter the pets of Caldwell County!

August 13th COVID-19 Update for Caldwell Humane Society, Inc.

Caldwell Humane Society, Inc. has received updated information from our surgery provider, the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA). ASNA is entering phase 2 of their re-opening, which means that CHS will be able to resume low-cost spay/neuter surgeries on a limited basis. Based on the limited number of appointments we are being allocated currently, it will take us several months to work through our previously scheduled appointment dates for April, May, and June. We will not be able to make new appointments until later this fall.

All appointment holders (previously booked for April, May, and June appointment dates) have the option of staying booked for a phase 2 appointment. If clients prefer to seek other spay/neuter options, we will issue refunds upon request. Refunds can be requested by email ([email protected]), text or phone call (828-499-0289). Please provide the ownerโ€™s name, petโ€™s name, and appointment date when you email or call for a refund.

As discussed above, no reservation sessions (to make new spay/neuter appointments) will be held until further notice. We encourage pet owners to take extra precautions to prevent unwanted litters. The web site of the Humane Society of Catawba County (https://catawbahumane.org/) indicates that they have re-opened for spay/neuter surgeries and vaccine clinics. We also recommend checking with Watauga Humane Society (https://wataugahumane.org/) for updates on their re-opening efforts. Both of these organizations have facilities and employees and can set their own re-opening timelines.

Bark in the Park, previously scheduled for April 4th, is also still on hold. Thank you for your support as we all do our part to help keep our community safe and healthy. To contact CHS, please email us at [email protected] or leave a message at (828) 499-0289 (a volunteer will return your call).
