Our area of service is within a 25 mile radius of Lenoir, NC. Being a veterinarian for the last 22 years, I have had the honor to help many people and animals through a vast variety of situations. Through the years, I have discovered that one of the most significant services that I can perform for a family and a pet, is providing a peaceful, stress free euthanasia when the time has come to let the

pet be free from suffering. I have cared for many of my own animals through this heart breaking final time, so I know the emotional toll it takes on the caregiver making this decision. It has become my passion and calling to help families and pets at their final time together to have a peaceful and pain-free passing.

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:
Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith.
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letterbox at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page were the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:
Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.
Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank you."

Help us feed pets from low-income families in our area. The HSCC Pet Food Pantry currently feeds around 800+ animals from low-income families in this community. By providing supplemental food to these pets we can help them stay in a loving home. As pet owners are aware, providing food for our furry friends can be very expensive. You can bring donations of wet/dry, dog/cat, kitten/puppy food by HSCC or Rescue Re-Tail during business hours. If you donate at Rescue Re-Tail you will receive a 15% discount off any store purchase you make the day you donate.

And sometimes as I am rushing from task to task,
Another load of laundry, a quick vacuum of the bedroom,
I see you sleeping peacefully,
And the gray in your muzzle and sprinkled around your eyes,
Makes my heart skip a beat, and I stop,
And I need to kneel down, and smooth your velvet ears and kiss your face,
And your eyes open, and your tail thumps a steady beat on the floor,
Righting the beat of my heart to match its rhythm,
And I whisper to you; slow down my friend, don’t age too fast,
And I slow down, and lie on the floor beside you,
For these moments are precious,
And I will not rush through the time I have with you.

"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh.
There was a pause.
"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.
"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."
"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.
"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.
"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.
"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."
And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right."
