Rabbits and Horses: Digestive
Twins in Different Sizes.

Despite their size difference, rabbits and horses share the most similar digestive systems and dental structure among domestic herbivores.

Both rabbits and horses are monogastric herbivores with a simple stomach for initial digestion. A large cecum and colon where microbial fermentation breaks down fibrous plant material and they rely on symbiotic microbes to extract nutrients from cellulose.

Both are:
Hindgut fermenters
* They rely on microbial fermentation in the cecum and colon to break down fibrous plant material.
* Their digestion depends on long strand, indigestible fiber like hay to keep the gut moving and microbes balanced.

Continuously growing teeth.
* Both species have similar structured hypsodont teeth, meaning their teeth grow continuously and must be worn down through chewing.
* Hay provides the abrasive texture and chewing duration needed to prevent dental overgrowth.

Hay = Fuel for Fermentation.
Hay provides long stem, indigestible fiber, which Keeps the gut moving and supports microbial health. This Prevents Gl stasis (rabbits) and colic (horses). Without hay, both species are at risk for:

* Microbial imbalance
* GI stasis or colic
* Dental overgrowth
* Behavioral frustration

Hay is a Digestive Foundation.
* Horses: Hay (or pasture) makes up the bulk of their diet. Grain is a supplement, not a staple.
* Rabbits: Hay should be 70-80% of their diet. Pellets and greens are a supplement not a staple.

Same Biology, Same Rules!
We would never feed a horse only grain or vegetables it would cause colic, acidosis, and behavioral stress. Likewise, feeding a rabbit only greens or pellets ignores their biological need for fiber and chewing. A diet void of hay goes against their biology.

Ear tattoos

So I’ve been asked a few times why I always tattoo any and all offspring at my rabbitry. Tattooing is a quick and easy way to help identify your rabbits. Many of us have rabbits that look very similar and can easily be switched. Always check ear tats before breeding, showing or selling! This also can help get a rabbit returned to you if lost, stolen or found in the wrong hands, that is if your rabbity has a specific ear tat. For example all rabbits produced to my rabbitry have numbers starting with a PD or PDR. I’ve been able to track down a few rabbits pedigree by recognizing the breeders ear tat and getting in contact with them. It also helps to make sure the right rabbits are bred if you have similar looking rabbits in rabbitry. Think of it like a permanent dog tag. If you choose not to tattoo your rabbits that’s fine to. Whatever works for you and your rabbitry!

I’ve gotten a lot of messages looking for rabbits and also some not so nice messages because I’m a breeder. So, let me clear some things up 🙂. I turn away many people or send them to other breeders because I don’t constantly breed my rabbits. I breed for a purpose, not to make a quick $. It’s not about the money for me and i dont even come close to making a profit because the feed I use is $30 a bag and i go through 50lbs a week. I feed free choice timothy hay and my cages are cleaned daily with freah shavings. That alone kills any profit. I generally enjoy my rabbits as just pets. But my purpose for breeding is to produce show quality rabbits, to better the breed, not just produce more of them. I only breed certain times during the year, my rabbits get long breaks and I only breed a female so many times in her life, period. When they retire, they have a forever home here, unless already promised to a pet only home! My Rabbitry is registered with ARBA, I’m not just some self proclaimed rabbitry. I have many ARBA registered rabbits not just pedigree. If a rabbitry or person is constantly breeding I would highly recommend avoiding them and looking elsewhere. That being said I have went through the followers and removed a bunch that looked to be fake accounts or bots. It’s not about the followers for me either but I do appreciate everyone and I appreciate the support!
