Puppy nipping is a very typical behavior that takes place with most puppies. Usually, but not always, lasting up until about 4.5 months or so. Yes, I know sometimes longer, too!

It is very natural for puppies to nip. Most puppy owners & even dog trainers will often associate puppy nipping with "teething." This is incorrect. There is a difference between why a puppy nips & why they teeth. Very different motivators.

Having said that, they both can be addressed by different techniques/behaviors because the cause for puppy nipping & teething are different. I just wanted to make that distinction. Let's get back to puppy nipping and save the other for another post.

Some dog trainers will recommend ONE technique, some will recommend a few, but VERY few will suggest how we can at the same time begin to STOP puppy nipping while also forging a habit within ourselves that will help foster a STRONGER relationship between our puppy and may have them MUCH MORE focused on us as they get older. Perhaps, even LASER FOCUSED.

What are some things that we as pet parents can do to mitigate or speed up the process of putting an end to puppy nipping while at the SAME time helping to get their ATTENTION? If you'd like, fill in this short contact form at www.dedicateddogtraining.com/contact-us/ and I will personally send you the 7 MOST important practices that you can begin to place into play immediately!

"I want my dog to do it without me offering him food or toys." "I want my dog to come to me without having to give her food." "I want my dog to listen to me without me having to use rewards all the time." "I want my dog......

Well, you get the picture.

"I want" if you find yourself to be guided by "I want" phrases & you are not making any progress with your puppy or dog, I'd like to share something that has helped dog owners to reach optimal results using the video below.

BUT the real SECRET is never mind what YOU want; find out what YOUR dog wants and then show him or her how to get it.

In every scenario that you'd like to encourage change in, perhaps pondering about what your dog might want FIRST can help you both mutually achieve your goals!

* now, of course, this obviously cannot solely be applicable to every situation, but if you devote some time thinking of a game plan starting with your dog's desires first......you may be very surprised šŸ˜®.

Below the dog is working for what HE wants.....the ball on the string, PLUS the second SECRET......playing with me!

Playing and being active with yout dog is what really keeps the focus and engagement on you rather than distractions.

The more FUN that YOU present to your dog, the more likely they will become distracted by the environment and some other competeting motivators.

In summary, WHATS IN IT FOR THE DOG is a good starting point to begin with.

Interesting?

And I must be honest it isnā€™t always the ā€œhusbandā€ sometimes it is the ā€œwifeā€ or even the kids or everyone ā€œelseā€ in the family. Often I think it is the husband or the male because they tend to be slightly less nurturing than the woman in the relationship, but it certainly works both w...

Antecedent in canine training. Everyone focuses on what to do AFTER our dog performs a certain behavior.

We worry how to stop it. How to REWARD it. How to discourage or encourage the behavior.

This way of thinking is good, but it ONLY represents a small piece of training.

The Antecedent or precursor with respect to training identifies what takes place BEFORE a canine displays a certain behavior. Can we change that behavior...ā€¦..BEFORE it happens?

Not always, but controlling the environment on a consistent basis to help set your dog up for Success should not be an overlooked tool in your toolbox.

For those that are familiar, feel free to provide some real world examples that you have done or are thinking of employing with respect to environmental control.

Learning is learning.

Although, training small dogs can be a bit harder on the back (you have to bend further down to give the treat!).šŸ˜Š
