Easy now, old friend, lay still, lay calm,
The battle's roar fades, the air turns warm.
Your breath is shallow, your eyes grow dim,
But I am here—I'm with you, Jim.

You carried me through fire and fear,
Through fields of mud, through skies unclear.
When bullets flew and the ground did quake,
You held your ground for my own sake.

I know it hurts, I see the pain,
But soon, old boy, you’ll be free again.
No more harness, no more fight,
Only peace in endless night.

Remember the days we raced through the sun,
When war was far and life was fun?
I see you now, in meadows wide,
Galloping free, no need to hide.

I wish I could mend your broken frame,
But war takes all—it’s cruel, it’s plain.
So rest, dear Jim, your work is done,
The battle's lost, but you have won.

Your courage stays, though you depart,
You gave your strength, you gave your heart.
And as you close your gentle eyes,
Know that a hero never dies.

Goodbye, old friend, you've earned your rest,
A soldier’s steed, you gave your best.
I'll carry your spirit, where'er I roam—
For now, go on... gallop home.

Good instructors put a lot of heart and soul into their students and their success is our success. Many of my riders have successfully competed at the Retired Racehorse makeover, Pony Club championships, The American Eventing championships, North American Junior & Young Rider Championships, the Classic 3-day championships and many regional and national awards.
This also takes a team of support from parents, barn mates and hardworking, capable students.

Over the last several months on three different occasions, I have had two world class Olympic trainers and one highly trained dressage trainer tell parents of my students how good they are and what great instruction they have had. I had one specifically walk over to me while she was giving a clinic to one of my junior riders tell me what a great job I’m doing with her. I even got offered a horse to have if I had another student like her to ride it.
There’s nothing sweeter than that validation even though I already knew. These kids were an example of those past students of mine who had grit and determination and allowed me to mold them into the great riders they are becoming.

I also take pride in my adults. With age ranges into the 70’s.
An example- Yesterday I gave them an exercise - right lead canter with a simple change on the straight to the left lead, then into halt with a turn on the forehand and immediately into right lead canter and repeat the process the other direction. They nailed it. Shows you can have great success at any age with hard work and proper instruction.

There have been occasions myself when I have had a visiting student and at the end of the lesson, I have told them that their instructor is doing a great job or that they should look for a new instructor. It’s easy to tell if a solid rider is being produced. You can have a rider who has the desire but the instructor is failing them. Many instructors just don’t have the skill to bring along the truest capable riders.

This post is dedicated to those students I have had over my many years of teaching and have now, who make it so worth while. I’m am so proud of you past and present.
