❄️ How your horse stays warm in this cold weather! ❄️
Be sure your horses have plenty of high quality forage through the winter vortex coming in.

❄️🐴 How Do Horses Stay Warm in Winter? 🌨️

Horses are naturally equipped to handle cold weather with unique adaptations that help them conserve heat and stay cozy. From their hair coat to their digestive system, they’ve got tools to help them thrive in winter conditions.🐎❄️

While they’re built for the cold, extra care—like proper forage, shelter, and monitoring—can help support them all winter long.✨

The next few days will be frigid! ❄️ Check out these great tips to keep your livestock comfortable in this weather from the TN Department of Agriculture!

Bitterly cold weather is in Tennessee. Don't delay in taking steps to protect your livestock.

✅ Provide shelter with protection from the wind and precipitation. That can be a barn, shed, or natural covering like a stand of trees or a high earthen bank.

✅ Check water sources frequently to ensure the water isn’t frozen. If necessary, break the ice to provide access to fresh and clean water.

✅ Nutritional needs often increase significantly during extremely cold weather and grass is limited this time of year. Always provide quality forage. Livestock are best able to regulate body temperature when provided with quality hay and in some cases, grain. Have a plan in case roads close due to conditions.

✅ Horses do not necessarily need blankets to stay warm. Although some owners may choose to blanket their horses for various reasons, a horse that is in good health with a natural winter coat, access to quality hay, and can move freely is usually able to remain comfortable in most conditions. Wet blankets are detrimental to horses and other livestock. If a blanket gets wet, it should be removed since it will not retain heat.

✅ Even in cold weather, livestock will often prefer to remain outdoors. However, owners should monitor for signs of cold sensitivity, like shivering or huddling together for warmth.

🐴The importance of floating your horse's teeth🐴
Floating teeth is the process where a veterinarian files down the sharp edges and points in a horse's mouth. Horses' teeth continually grow throughout their life and it is essential to have your vet check the status of the teeth. Because the teeth never stop growing, horses can develop sharp edges, points or hooks. Having points or hooks in a horses' mouth can become very painful and lead to more problems if left untreated. Horses must chew their food fully to provide the best digestion. Having teeth problems inhibits proper chewing which decreases the rate at which nutrients are absorbed. Teeth problems can lead to malnutrition causing weight loss and other health issues such as choking.

Signs that your horse may need its teeth floated:
1. Dropping grain when eating
2. Difficulty chewing or shifting food to one side of the mouth
3. Mouth odor
4. Facial swelling
5. Tossing head or being reluctant when a bit is placed in the mouth
6. Appetite decrease or weight loss

We recommend having your horse's teeth checked every 6 months to a year. Most horses can go 1-2 years between floats, but different factors can affect how frequently your horse needs its' teeth done.

Join us December 9th-13th from 8am- 12pm for our Equine teeth float week. This is a perfect time to get your horses' teeth in tip top shape before the winter weather truly sets in!

We are offering 3 different packages:
1. Teeth Float Alone $100 (Usually $132)

2. Small Float Package- Teeth float, Core, Flu/Rhino vaccine $195 (Usually $230)

3. Premium Float Package- Teeth float, Core, Flu/Rhino, Coggins, F***l Egg Count and Dewormer $210 (Usually $325)

🐄All about cattle dystocia🐄
Many things can go wrong when calves are brought in to the world and it is very crucial to understand when to intervene in the birthing process. In ideal cases, mother nature will take its course and a healthy calf will be born. In other cases, it is absolutely necessary to intervene and assist in the birthing process.

First stage of labor: The first stage of labor is the dilation of the cervix. In this stage the cervical plug dissolves and the uterine muscles begin to contract. In this stage cows will typically separate themselves from the herd and may become restless. Some other signs to look out for are elevation of the tail and vaginal discharge.

Second stage of labor: The second stage of labor is the delivery of a calf. Stage 2 begins when the cervix is completely dilated and the fetus enters the birth canal. Normal presentation of a calf is considered anterior presentation meaning the two front legs and nose are visible. Complications in stage 2 can include abnormal presentation of the calf. Some of these to watch out for are: one leg visible, 2 legs and no nose, no legs, or a tail. If you notice abnormal presentation of the calf or your cow has been in active labor for 45 minutes with no progress immediately call us here at TennSouth Veterinary Services. The second stage of labor ends when the calf is successfully delivered.

Third stage of labor: After the calf is delivered, the placenta will be expelled. Usually this will happen relatively soon after calving but can take up to a couple days. If your cow has not passed the placenta within 2-3 days after calving or is acting off please give us a call.

Typically calving will not warrant a C-section however in certain circumstances is it necessary. Below are some recent pictures of our awesome team preforming C-sections!

🐮 IT'S THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN WE PLACE
OUR ANNUAL AUTOGENOUS PINKEYE
VACCINE ORDER 🐮

• Pinkeye is a bacterial infection of the bovine eye that causes inflammation, pain, and in severe cases, blindness. Commercial vaccines are outdated and do not have current strains present of the bacteria that causes Pinkeye. Our autogenous Pinkeye vaccine is updated yearly with eye swabs from affected cattle in our region. This ensures that new strains of bacteria causing Pinkeye are introduced in to the vaccine yearly providing the most protection possible for your cattle.
If you are interested in your herd being vaccinated against Pinkeye next year please call the clinic at (931) 359- 7393 and let us know your herd size.

• Disclaimer: This vaccine does not claim to prevent Pinkeye fully, however it does provide an extra layer of protection. Some additional ways to prevent Pinkeye is by bushogging regularly, providing minerals, and fly control.
