We were so excited to add this young gelding to the program yesterday. So excited for this guys future! Thank you Ashley Quarter Horses for always raising such nice horses for us to choose from.

After some pedigree research, we found out he’s bred pretty close to Sarah Dawson’s awesome mare Shine Smarter. He’s not too bad to look at either 😉😍.

Teddy is a beautiful, coming 4-year-old, palomino gelding standing 14.2 hands tall. He gets his name from his sweet demeanor. He’s just like a Teddy Bear! He’s been started right and has a very nice handle. He understands how to stay soft in the face, collect up, and how to move his shoulders, hips, and side pass. He has a solid stop, neck reins well, and has the start of a nice spin. Teddy catches easily, saddles, shoes, bridles, stands tied patiently, and loads in a trailer easily. He’s been exposed to kids, dogs, cattle, ropes, tarps, and takes it all well. He does well with time off and daily graining. He has a quiet willing attitude, but still has the talent and athletic ability to make an outstanding performance prospect. Teddy would make an excellent breakaway, heel horse, reined cow horse, or ranch/trail horse prospect.

Teddy’s second day traveling into town to get some more exposure. Today we got to experience goats, pigeons, an ATV, and a lot going on with high school rodeo practice going on. With the weather we’ve been having, it makes it tough to get one out and about. So glad to have a great facility close for a different experience for my young horses.

Teddy did really well today, even with pigeons dive bombing us 🤣. Someone is really going to get a great little gelding.

Love this!

Finding balance, both mentally & physically, when training horses is critical. The physical aspect is a conversation for another day. Today, I want to talk about mental balance.

Desensitizing can be a controversial term or activity when discussing horse training methods. Still, no matter how you look at it, you are desensitizing or sensitizing your horse to something, be it your leg, your rein, or an object like a rope, flag, or stick/string. It doesn't always have to be on the extreme side involving balls, pool noodles, & other novel objects.

When working with my training clients or lesson/clinic students, I'll frequently draw a line in the sand to represent the middle where perfect balance resides. I'm not sure we ever truly achieve PERFECT mental balance as we're always teetering on one side or the other as we make adjustments in our training.

The ideal horse is both quiet(+) & responsive(+). If you do too much sensitizing, you'll have a horse who's responsive(+) & reactive(-) but not quiet(+). On the other hand, if you do too much desensitizing & not enough sensitizing, you'll likely create a horse who's quiet(+) & dull(-) but not responsive(+). Neither of those last two options is ideal or much fun to work with or ride.

Remember that the amount of desensitizing or sensitizing necessary will vary if a horse is cold-blooded (lower energy) versus hot-blooded (higher energy) & no two will be the same.

This cutie did so great last night. Teddy had almost a week off with the sub-zero temperatures we were having over this past weekend, and he didn’t skip a beat. Rode off like I’d been riding him every day. My husband was even using the skidsteer moving some stuff around in the arena and honked the horn to see if he could get some action. None of it phased Teddy.

Teddy is still available. He would make a great cow horse, reining, breakaway, or heel horse prospect.

Knowing position and what a good horse feels like is huge in team roping. Good horsemanship is key to any horse discipline. Knowing how your horses body works and how you make their body do the things you want is a never ending learning experience. Personally, it's a journey that I will always enjoy. Knowledge is power!

As 26-time World Champion Trevor Brazile says, the best way to improve your team roping is to improve your horsemanship.

This 3 year old gelding is so dang smart he makes my job easy. We had our first ride in the barn completely solo, and he handled it like a pro. And it was one of the first cool days of fall. This one might be a keeper 🤩🤩.

Gus had his first full day earning his keep today. He handled it all like a pro, including a an ATV buzzing up from behind him to catch a cow. He didn’t take one bad step. So pleased with this Ashley Quarter Horses gelding.

After selling Apollo, we were going through some Friesian withdrawals!!

Meet the newest addition to the V/C!

This handsome yearling gelding is 1/2 Friesian 1/2 Quarter Horse. And his dam is bred like my favorite buckskin mare (Two Eyed Jack & Driftwood breeding). To say we’re excited would be an understatement.

Name pending. We’ve got to come up with something special for this beautiful boy 😍.
