Inspired by the new school year we are launching a new educational mini series entitled “History of the Cocktail” 🍸 First up: the Classic Old Fashioned 🥃
This was the first flavor we launched, fittingly our OG flavor. It is a favorite in KY and has a rich history. In fact, its history is so rich that numerous books have been written about this one drink.
While the origins are still debatable, one thing we do know is that the term “Old Fashioned” once referred not to one specific drink but to a general style of beverage preferred by traditionalists in an era when bartenders were becoming creative with cocktail flavors and ingredients.
Robert Simonson, author of “The Old Fashioned: The Story of the World’s First Classic Cocktail, with Recipes & Lore” says, “the Old fashioned was an evolution of the Whiskey Cocktail which was simply whiskey, sugar, bitters, and water and was served as early as 1800 or so.” The story goes that bartenders began to embellish drinks and customers rebelled against the innovative beverages, choosing to order the “old fashioned” version.
Some say that the Old Fashioned became an official cocktail with a recipe of its own in 1880 at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky when James E. Pepper, distiller and club member, created the recipe and took it to the Waldorf Astoria hotel bar in NYC.
Now the Old Fashioned is a staple drink at every bar, especially in the bluegrass state where it’s been named the official cocktail of Louisville and is celebrated with events throughout the state. 🐴
