Did you know glaucoma affects about 2% of dogs in the U.S.? Recognizing the signs early is essential to prevent the condition from worsening and leading to vision loss.

You may first notice redness around the eye, tearing, squinting, or even a decreased appetite or activity level from your pet. Over time, the eye may begin to appear cloudy and larger or bulging.

- Surgery Veterinary Technician - McMurray, PA

We are looking for a Veterinary Technician to join our Surgery team at MedVet Pittsburgh hospital. Our Surgery team works in a fast-paced environment, offering technicians comprehensive training across various facets of the department and frequent interaction with other hospital teams. This role will manage appointments, patient histories, and medical records, while also prepping patients for surgery, performing blood draws, and ensuring all documentation is accurate and complete. Additionally, they will play a crucial role in communicating with clients, creating patient releases, and maintaining the cleanliness and readiness of our operating rooms.

A few months ago, Cora was suffering with a limp caused by a torn cruciate ligament—similar to an ACL injury in humans—and was brought in to MedVet Hilliard to see to Dr. Sarah Bisgard, our Board-certified Veterinary Surgeon. Dr. Bisgard performed a TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) to stabilize her knee and get her back on her paws.

Recently, Cora returned for her final recheck, and we celebrated her recovery with a charming graduation cap photo shoot! Her unique snaggle teeth only added to the cuteness. We will miss her sweet smile, but we’re so proud of her journey! 🐶

The sights and sounds of New Year’s fireworks can be thrilling for us, but they often feel overwhelming and stressful for our pets.

Loud noises can trigger anxiety and cause stress, leading to behaviors like panting, whining, or hiding—prepare ahead by following these tips.

✔️ Exercise your pet before celebrations begin
✔️ Use white noise or soothing music to drown out the booms
✔️ Keep windows and gates closed to prevent escape attempts
✔️ Provide hiding spots where they can feel secure
✔️ Never leave them unattended outside during the festivities
✔️ If you can, stay home with them for added comfort

Do not forget to ensure their ID tags are on and consider microchipping for added security. If your pet struggles with anxiety, consult your veterinarian about calming medications.

A little prep goes a long way to ensure a happy and stress-free holiday for you and your pet. Happy New Year from MedVet!

Coco was enjoying a marrow bone at home when it got stuck on her lower jaw, causing her a lot of distress and discomfort. Our MedVet Columbus team quickly sprang into action, sedating her to ensure she was comfortable and safe while we focused on her care. Despite our best efforts, our caregivers couldn’t remove the bone manually, so they used a cast saw to carefully cut it in half. The specialized saw used oscillates rather than spinning, making it safe to wield near the skin.

Coco woke up feeling much better and went home good as new! We’re so glad she’s back to her playful self.

🎉 We’re over the moon to share Laya’s incredible journey of recovery with MedVet Pittsburgh! Last month, Laya was brought to our ER after a tragic accident with a truck. Dr. Joe Ielapi, our dedicated ER doctor, found that she had a prepubic tendon rupture (a tear in the ligament supporting her abdomen), dislocations in her hip and spine-to-pelvis joint, fractures in her pelvic bones, two broken thigh bones, and superficial abrasions. Dr. Ielapi quickly stabilized Laya, treated her wounds, and admitted her to the ICU for pain management.

Drs. Lynne Snow and Leah Miller, our expert orthopedic surgeons, were consulted to address Laya’s multiple injuries. Given the complexity, her surgeries were staged over several days. First, they corrected her hernia and torn tendon and repaired the fractures on the right side of her body, including her pelvis and thigh bone. A few days later, they tackled the left side, ensuring that every bone was set, and every joint was realigned. Both procedures were lengthy, taking over 4 hours each, but the results were nothing short of miraculous!

Thanks to the incredible teamwork and advanced medical techniques, Laya was able to walk out of the hospital unassisted at the beginning of December. We’re so proud of her and can’t wait to see her continue to thrive!
