Meet Onyx! This handsome devil is here for some unsolicited control issues (not too uncommon for herding breeds). Onyx has some big changes at home and started acting out in very undesirable ways that made his humans loose trust in him. We are going to help Onyx with some basic obedience skills, how to follow direction, not everything is free, and good behavior gets you more freedoms.

Puppy raising chronicles
Crate training! We are in the middle of it 🙃
Sometimes you get lucky but never count on it. A huge piece to our success with raising puppies is the crate. Some people may find that cruel or as ‘cheating’ but hey…we have the dogs to prove that it turns out better than fine!
With our 9 week old puppy, he is on a rotation of
Wake up about 8a, potty with a short amount of time to run around, back to crate with food, out for potty then a series of back and forth from training sessions, field trips, and hanging out with crate time in between each of those.
Seems excessive? If the quality of the outing is fulfilling enough puppy should be pretty tired and ready to rest anyway. If they are not, then it’s a good time to learn patience in waiting. A skill a lot of dogs don’t have.
Crating over leaving them run amuck in your house will prevent a lot of bad habits (chewing, being too busy, anxiousness, and more) and also help structure your puppy’s life better.
With age, they will earn more time out of the crate!
Winston just started our advance obedience sessions focusing on energy management, better listening, and nic’ing some quirks like picking on his much older brother! He was a little tuckered out by the end of this lesson, can you tell 🥴?

We have a new puppy in the house! Everyone, meet Scrim! We added Scrim to the family to pursue bite sports with and also some detection work.
Raising a puppy doesn’t need to be hell, it should be fun and not too difficult if you do it the right way 😉

Puppy raising chronicles
Food n’ things. Around here, puppy works for approx 70% of their food through the day primarily through training session or in some hunting fashion. Meal times don’t need to be complicated but it shouldn’t come for free!
Chews. This is something I’ve started doing over time to encouraging positive alone time and build separation while staying preoccupied. When we want to settle in for the evening, eat dinner, or are preoccupied I like to give puppies a chewie. They are appropriate selected for their age and what they are capable of chewing on. Too hard a treat may cause a puppy to give up. Too bland may be too boring. Too soft may defeat the purpose and is gone in a flash. These are some of the chews I picked up for the next couple weeks for an 8 week old pup.
I have no science behind this but it makes sense to me to slowly introduce new proteins/ ingredients to younger dogs so that they build strong gut health. Feeding the same kibble and close to only that may not help build stomach tolerance for new things later down the line.

Puppy raising chronicles #2
Manage your puppy’s time appropriate.
Your new puppy has 2 modes (generally)… ‘go go go’ and sleep. A lot of people want a magical/ unicorn mode of ‘chill’ but most puppies don’t come with that feature right off the bat 😅
How do you fulfill their waking hours?
-Training time (with food)
-Field trip (use food)
-Chew time
-Play time
-Alone time
A good chunk of their day should be crate/ sleep time. They need more sleep then you’d think and even if you have a lot of time to supervise them you need to promote alone time so they learn to cope with separation.
Enjoy the early days because the energy meter only goes up from here 😂. Don’t try to overly entertain your puppy, but still fulfill their daily needs so that rest time is easier on them.

Puppy raising chronicles series
We have a new puppy in the house! (Group ‘awww’) So here is my attempt to share information that may not be so common as it’s comes up fresh in my mind.
Day 1/2
Coming home. I’ve had clients tell me that their puppies trip home is the cause of ‘X, Y, Z’ behavior issues because it was a traumatic experience.
Well, hate to tell you but unless you were in a car accident or similar, there’s no reason your puppy should not bounce back from a novel experience such as a car ride, flight, or whatever when you bring them home. If your puppy is well bred and has good genetics, and experienced little to no inappropriate stress in utero till the day you bring them home…then they should be able to recover from events such as being separated and coming to their new home.

Thank you Mr/ Ms Skunk for going easy on my sweet and dumb red dog 🥰. You withheld your true full potential, with only a spritz of a warning 🙏😅
Thought of the day…
Remember going to your new school at the start of the year. How stressful and confusing it was to navigate classes, make class partners, or where to eat?
It was pretty rough.
However, with time and repetitions you gained confidence and clarity with your routine then actually started to look forward to school after awhile.
It’s the same for dogs. If you let them avoid healthy stress, they never get to feel that sense of accomplishment getting through stress. They get stuck in a ‘I can’t’ mindset because they never had ‘I can!!’ moments.
I can’t stress enough that stress l, to a degree, is good for a lot of us! It makes us stronger mentally and thrive in the real world!

None of us were prepared for this and Sierra was clearly appalled 😅. We packed up but as soon as we were all in the van the rain stopped and the sun came out 😑

We love a good hike and sometimes our training pups get to join in on the fun! Daisy did an awesome job sticking with the pack and had a ton of fun following them in the water and chasing them up the hills!
Kano went home last week! When I met Kano, he let it be known that I was not welcome and barked a good portion of the evaluation. There was a lot of imbalance in his life and his behavior left him house ridden. After training, Kano is making much better decisions and coexisting with the world! Excited to see him enjoy his new freedoms!
The happiest dogs are well trained dogs. Dogs who are taught what is alright AND what is wrong gain clarity quickly. With clarity comes confidence. Imagine you are taking a test. If you are making guesses and sometimes get it right that’s good! You’re happy and you keep trying blindly. Eventually you may get board or frustrated because you can’t seem to figure out what you did right the first time. Now imagine you have a mentor standing next to you while taking this test. You are working your test and your mentor notices you are getting confused and further from your answer so they stop you by saying ‘ah-ah, try again’. So you try something else instead of wasting time and effort going down the wrong path. With the elimination of the wrong answers, you are quicker to find the right ones. You’re able to catch patterns and work out the solutions quicker because you can connect the dots. You gain confidence in learning and answering questions successfully. Make sense, right? It does to your dog too!
My top 3 important words I want my dogs to know are their name for a recall, and our marker words “good” and “no”. With these words in place, it makes navigating the world so much easier and clearer! Basic behaviors such as ‘sit’ and ‘heel’ are the perfect place to strengthen our marker words for when we really need it in real life to say “no, don’t approach that XYZ” or “no, stay away from my steak on the table”.
Don’t ya hate when you’re in the middle of a great session only to realize later you’ve been talking at the phone for no reason because it’s DEAD? 😑 Oh well! Our clients receive multiple videos like this one throughout the board and train for many reasons. It’s a great sneak peak into what the dogs are up to and how they behave in the environments away from home.
Do you have a dog with hair? 💁♀️ If you said yes (👀👀👀…most of you, right?) then help prepare your puppy, young dog or full grown adult with grooming exercises! You can save money, headache, and create a better relationship with your dog by practicing handling. Some key areas to focus on are ears, toes, nails, and their mouth! Make sure to have a leash on to prevent your dog from telling you when it’s over. It’s never too late to build these skills and food will help!
Loose leash walking! Don’t give up on your dog and help them learn what you want them to be doing. 🐾Three quick tips on teaching a loose leash walk🐾 🦴Pick the right walking equipment for your dog! Find a tool that works for both you and your dog and make sure to do your research on how to properly use it. 🦴Make it clear when it’s time to walk at your side and when it’s OK to sniff. Your dog should be able to do both on a walk but make sure it on your terms and when appropriate 🦴Walking in ‘figure 8’s can help condition your dog to be in the correct spot at your heel side. It’s ideal for your dog to be able to see you in their peripheral vision so they can keep at a pace *with* you.
FALSE!!! Treadmills can also be used to help nervous and/ or anxious dogs to release negative energy and enter a state of relaxation. How?!? Low speeds and time! Not all dogs need a level 8 incline and to run at 5mph…although there is a place for that too. Some dogs benefit from slow, repetitive, boring walking and bonus points if things are going on around them like desensitizing triggers (in a thoughtful way). This will help expend some energy but also help a dogs mental state. Give it a try!!
Coming from the west coast, I’ve found it interesting how well dogs on the east fair with thunder/ lightening storms. It’s pretty obvious why that is but still something I’ve never thought about until seeing it. I wonder if my west coast dogs are immune to the loud booms and flashes of light just because they are so well desensitized and confident? Regardless, I’m glad they are so adaptable and I sympathize for those who struggle with thunder phobias!! There are ways to help your dog feel less anxious during storms so please don’t give up on helping them overcome their fears!
Have you ever heard a hound dog ‘bay’? Baying is a specific sound used by scent hounds to communicate to humans and other dogs and helps to coordinate a hunt. Baying allows hunting companions to know which dogs have the scent and therefore should be followed. -google #hounddog #bloodhound #gooddog #dogtraining #kentuckydogs #dogsofkentucky #dogsofinstagram #dog
This is why I adore and sometimes regret (only for short moments 🤪) having high drive dogs. No matter the weather, holiday, or whats going on in my life they still need their needs met on a regular basis…OR ELSE! Lol I don’t always throw the ball for free, but when I do it’s because it’s raining and I want to hurry and get it done.
One of the first behaviors we work on in a board and train is walking on a loose leash. This takes a lot of repetitions and muscle memory for the dog to learn the picture of where they should position themselves beside the person. Once we have loose leash walking, and the start of other basic behaviors, we can take our training out on the road! At the start of the session, you can see Bourbon going between the barrel and myself. This is a strategy I use to teach leash pressure and how to move into the pressure in order to turn it off. Teaching leash pressure is a super important skill often missed! (Teaching leash pressure is when the dog learns to move towards the pressure they feel with a collar & leash in order for the pressure to be relieved. This goes against their natural desire of opposition reflex, aka feel pressure and push against it like most dogs who pull on a leash)
