The three days of the blackbird

This is a legend I have been quite familiar with ever since I was a child. It is a legend from the region I live in: Lombardy.

Januray 29th, 30th and 31st are known as the "three days of the blackbird" and are thought to be the coldest days of the year.

According to an ancient legend, blackbirds used to be white in the past. One day - it was very, very cold - a blackbird family was struggling to find a shelter to hide from the cold. Father blackbird went to look for some food, while mother blackbird with her children found a confortable place near a chimney pot.

When father blackbird came back, he found his wife and children all black with soot! It is believed that blackbirds have been black ever since.
