Tara Butler-Rodi from the Rockbridge Spca stopped by the 3WZ studio with Exxon. He is available for adoption now!

In fact, lots of pups are available! Go meet Exxon or any of the other amazing animals at the shelter! Take them for a walk or spend a little time playing with them. It won’t take long to see why shelter pets make the best friends!

$156… one hundred fifty six dollars. That’s how much it would have cost Bella’s family to allow her to pass with dignity, surrounded by those she knew and gave the best 15 years of her life to.

Yesterday, when picking up Gizmo and taking him to foster, one of our board members witnessed Bella’s family dropping her off at ACS. Unsettled by the fact that this poor senior, who had to be physically carried from the car to kennel, would spend her last moments in a scary shelter, we reached out to tag her for rescue. She was brought to campus by her former owners who noted that she had been rapidly declining over the past 4 days: lack of appetite, unresponsive, incontinence and bloody diarrhea. They could have spent $156 to have her humanely euthanized, calm and comfortable in their arms, and left with a ceramic paw print. Instead, they dropped her off at the shelter to be euthanized alone, scared and confused surrounded by barking dogs.

That. Is. Not. Ok.

Read it again: THAT. IS. NOT. OK.

It will never be ok but today, two of our volunteers picked Bella up, took her for french fries and a pup cup and held her. They told her how much they loved her as she peacefully passed away at 4pm.

Folks, we understand things happen. Bella’s family did not seek medical attention for their sweet senior. Times are tough and maybe they couldn’t afford significant vet bills but not spending $156… asking a few acquaintances for $20 each… is unacceptable, unforgivable and unfortunately the stark reality for many, many dogs at the shelter right now.

We would appreciate you taking a moment of silence in Bella’s honor and sending good vibes this way as our volunteers reel from a tough day in rescue. If you feel so led - volunteer, foster, adopt, donate and for all our sakes… DON’T LEAVE YOUR SENIOR DOGS AT THE SHELTER

One week out from the time of year all pet owners DREAD. How can you start to prepare? 🎇

- If your dog takes medication for calming, refill them now. Ensure you start giving them before the fireworks start
- Check latches on gates. Ensure there are no holes in fence.
- Make sure microchips are UTD, dogs are wearing collars with ID and charged GPS trackers

🎆 What are our recommendations for reducing stress in your pups & keeping them safe? 🎆
- Take a long walk the morning of the 4th
- Tire them out mentally: brain games, puzzles, new toys
- Invest in a long lasting chew or lickmat to keep occupied
- Create a safe space for the pup and turn on white noise, music, TV
- ONLY walk your dog ON A LEASH - even in fenced yard. One surprise boom can send them over a fence
- Don’t take your dog out as dusk approaches. Put down potty pads

Oh.. and don’t be a afraid to tell a friend fireworks are a silly tradition. Donate your $$ to a good cause instead. 💜
