Meet our newest intake, a precious family of rats 🍀

~

We took in a surrender of 13 rats last week—two adults, three 5-week-old babies, and eight 2-week-old pups.

Mom and Dad were purchased as pets from the feeder bin at a local pet store and were unfortunately sexed incorrectly. Mom had two accidental litters before Dad was separated, and both Mom and her 5-week-old girl are currently on pregnancy watch. Dad was living on his own in the bottom half of a critter trail cage before joining our rescue, and he's since been very excited to share a larger enclosure with his two 5-week-old boys.

Everyone is in overall good health so far, though one of the 5-week-old boys came to us with an injured back leg (photo on the last slide). The previous owner didn't know what happened to cause the injury, but thankfully baby boy's swelling has gone down significantly. He's got a vet appointment first thing this morning to get it checked out, and we're hoping for a speedy recovery ♥️

Alice and Moira are retired moms who joined us from the hoarding case in Warren County, OH earlier this year. They were excellent moms to their litters (the Wonderland & Schitts Creek kiddos), but they've been really enjoying that kid-free life ever since! These ladies are looking forward to a lifetime of pampering in their post-mom era ✨

🍀 Meet Gin 🍀

Gin is a sassy Syrian hamster who come to our rescue over 365 days ago! She was pregnant when she arrived, and after her stint as an excellent momma, she's been enjoying the child-free life. Gin is a bossy lady who is occasionally a bit of a ghost ham. However, she loves to rearrange her space, so she's often more social after cleaning day.

🍀 Meet Apricot 🍀

Apricot is an active, curious Syrian hamster who was born in our care in June 2024. He loves to climb and demand treats at all hours of the day, even when he should be napping. Apricot has grown into his adult colors quite thoroughly since his last photo shoot, and his distinctive orange coat has continued to brighten, making him one of the most unique-looking hams we’ve seen in quite a while!

Huge thank you to Preferred Veterinary Care in Lebanon, KY! They had a stockpile of small animal supplies that were collecting dust and were kind enough to donate everything. We picked up 8 cages and loads of feeders, water bottles, and toys, all of which are a huge help as we've been weaning dozens of mice this month.

Big shout out to Happy Horizon Hamster Haven for organizing info on Mouse Hepatitis Virus!

Many of our mice available for adoption are also from the same hoarding situation, and we've been carefully researching to give these critters the best chance at long, happy lives. Online resources on MHV can be challenging to digest as they're often full of very scientific language, and HHHH has done a wonderful job breaking down the important information to know when considering adopting mice who've potentially been exposed.

🍀Sunday Spotlight - Bean 🍀

This cutie has been in our rescue for 234 days! She was surrendered to us along with another dwarf ham who was adopted before she even made it to our socials. Before coming to our rescue, Bean and her roomie were living in a plastic drawer above another pair of hamsters, who unfortunately passed away before we were able to pick them up from the owner.

Bean is a classic "look-dont-touch" ham who knows that hands are THE mortal enemy that MUST be dealt with. She's always active and very cute, but she's NOT handleable. Bean's ideal adopter doesn't mind letting her do her thing with minimal interference.

🍀 Sunday Spotlight - Shiitake🍀

Somebody come get her...no but seriously, Shiitake was born in our care 382 days ago and is READY for her forever home. She’s one of our most social hams and loves riding around on our shoulders while we’re working around the rescue. She may have killed two of our largest bin cages despite having SO MUCH to do…but we’re still suckers for this sweet little ham. I mean, look at that face.

*Note - For obvious reasons, we HIGHLY recommend a glass enclosure for adopters who are interested in Shiitake
