We love our hard working barn cats.
Barn cats are essential to our lives on the farm. They provide a most valuable service of pest control. But have you ever wondered how cats on farms came to be? 🤔
Cats are believed to have descended primarily from the African wildcat in the Fertile Crescent and ancient Egypt. Domesticated cats were seen as early as the Neolithic period when ancient humans allowed cats to come into their homes to deter pests such as snakes. This led to the cat being viewed as a sacred creature.
It’s thought that cats likely came to Europe and America on ships sailed with famous explorers such as Christopher Columbus and the early Jamestown settlers. Cats were welcomed into barns where grain storage naturally attracted rodents. Some of these cats remained feral, others semi feral, but by the 19th and 20th century cats were viewed as companions and beloved house pets as well! 🐱
Fun fact: cats were used by the early United States Postal Service as mousers! Paper attracts mice who love to build their nests out of it and the cats served as a way to keep mail safe 💌
Today we can’t help but imagine a barnyard without at least one cat. 🐈 Treat them well to thank them for these years of service by shopping for Barn Kat Krunchies online at BarnDogBites.com 👏
