🔥 Summer is officially here 🔥
Lexington has now released that we are in a phase 1 heat alert . This includes our furry friends as well! A few things to keep in mind this week as the temperatures continue to rise!
⁃ ☀️Check concrete temperature prior to walks! If it is too hot for your hand it’s too hot for their feet! Try to walk them in the grass or you can purchase shoes for them!
⁃ ☀️Limit outdoor time, take walks earlier in the day, take a shorter and less strenuous walk
⁃ ☀️ If your pet has to be outside for long periods of time make sure to have fresh and cool water available and a shade spot for them to get out of them sun! Bonus point if you keep ice in their water or make them an ice treat
⁃ ☀️ Heat Stroke signs to watch out for : Excessive painting, hot skin, bright red gums or tongue, dry mouth, difficulty balancing. If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms please seek veterinary care immediately.

Celebrating the Fourth of July unfortunately often causes fireworks anxiety in some pets, which can range from mild distress to severe destructive behavior. Additionally, this time of year sees a significant increase in escaped animals due to frantic reactions to fireworks. Several strategies can help alleviate this stress. For mild cases, enclosing the pet in an indoor room with loud music may be beneficial. Various nutraceuticals for anxiety can also be effective in mild situations. In my opinion, tightly fitting shirts have limited value. For severe fireworks or thunderstorm anxiety, medications are often helpful. These include anti-anxiety medications such as alprazolam or trazodone, and sedatives such as acepromazine or Sileo, typically administered about an hour before the fireworks. If your pet experiences fireworks anxiety, please call the clinic to schedule a brief exam to rule out complicating factors and to obtain the appropriate medication.
