Tennessee Equine Hospital West ’s Dr. Cindy Weis shares heat stress warning signs to keep in mind in summer. ☀️

The quickest way and most efficient ways to decrease your horse’s body temperature include:

-Stop all exercise. Remove tack.
-Remove horse from direct sunlight. Get into the shade.
-Place horse where air is circulating – where there is a breeze or create a breeze with a fan.
-Hose with cool water starting at the hooves, working up the legs, over the large muscle groups of hindquarters, back, neck and head if horse allows for as long as needed.
-Offer as much cool, clean water as horse will drink.

Contact your veterinarian in case your horse fails to respond to your efforts and the need for intravenous fluids and medical intervention to reduce body temperature occurs if conditions deteriorate rapidly.

"Cool" hot weather tips! ☀️

The notion that a hot, recently exercised horse needs to walk until they are completely cooled off is a myth. A 2020 study found that out of the five methods tested, the quickest way to return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application. This doesn't mean that you should abruptly stop exercise—finish your ride or training session with a slow walk to allow your horse's heart rate and breathing to gradually return to normal, but after that your sweaty, hardworking horse should be offered a cool shower and drinking water (small but frequent amounts) without delay.

Overall, enjoy your summer rides but be aware of signs of heat stress in your horse. When heat and humidity soar, even moderate exercise can push your equine friend's body temperature beyond safe limits! Be sure to contact your veterinarian for more information about heat stroke and for recommendations tailored to your horse's individual situation.

Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA waives all adoptions fees through July 4th!

From now until July 4, 2024, all adoption fees at CGHS/SPCA will be waived. The goal during this time is to empty the shelter by Independence Day! The sponsored adoption fees cover cats, dogs, and pocket pets (rabbits and guinea pigs).

BISSELL Pet Foundation is hosting Emergency Empty the Shelters at your LHS from May 31-June 9! The event is intended to help participating organizations clear space for communities impacted by the recent severe weather.

With our nation’s shelters full and out of state transport of homeless pets slowing, we are calling on the community for help. Every adoption creates space to help shelters in the impacted areas, most of which must move out adoptable pets to hold pets that need temporary housing.

Join your LHS at our Main Adoption Center at 1600 Old Frankfort Pike AND our Everyday Adoption Center inside PetSmart in Hamburg for reduced adoption fees on select dogs available through June 9.
