Did you hear? February is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷
You may have heard your vet say dentals are crucial for your pet’s health, but what does a routine dental entail? 🤔
▪️ PRE-ANESTHETIC BLOODWORK: This helps us determine if your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia and whether anesthesia would be compromising your pet in any way.
▪️ PRE-MEDICATIONS: This includes a sedative and pain control. These help prepare your pet for their IV catheter and play a defining role in our Fear-Free protocol as well to ensure your pet’s fear, anxiety, and stress is at a minimum!
▪️ ANESTHETIC INDUCTION: Your pet will receive an induction medication which will allow our team to place an endotracheal tube (or “ET” tube). This is what makes it possible for us to have control over your pet’s anesthetic depth and oxygen rate via their lungs. The tube also prevents the water used during a dental procedure from entering the lungs.
▪️ GENERAL ANESTHESIA: These are the anesthetic gasses (such as Isoflurane) that are used to control the pet’s level of anesthesia. It takes expertise to be able to maintain a proper level of anesthesia.
▪️ SURGICAL MONITORING: One of our very skilled technicians will monitor your pet’s heart rate, respirations, oxygenation, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen flow rate, anesthetic gas percentage, and fluid administration. Basically, we keep all things running smoothly until your fur baby wakes up!
▪️ DENTAL SCALING & POLISHING: While your pet is being carefully monitored, another technician performs dental scaling to remove all that built-up plaque, tartar, and calculus. The teeth will also be polished with dental grade toothpaste, just like at your dental visit!
▪️ DENTAL MAPPING: After cleaning, the tech and veterinarian will evaluate every tooth from all angles and record any diseased teeth and other problems in the mouth.
