Jack is looking handsome in his new blanket😍. Jack is one of our sanctuary animals. He came to us after his horse companion and one of his owners passed away. Jack became extremely depressed and withdrawn. We were asked by Red Bell Run if we could help. We agreed to head up and meet the big guy and bring him in. After months of not letting any one near him, I was able to walk up and wrap my arms around that big boy and give him a good ole ear scratch, halter him and lead him on the trailer.

The first few weeks for us were a bit anxious for us with Jack. We tried Jack in a few different herds and he would park himself in a corner all day with his head hung. After pairing him in Hasty’s herd he finally perked up! He loves the girls, Ember and Tucson are his favorite.

Jack is one of our most sensitive equines. Horses and donkeys are highly emotional and form strong bonds with their herd mates. For Jack’s wellbeing he will remain with the herd he has chosen as even removing him for a brief moment causes him severe anxiety and he’s in his late 20’s and one of our oldest residents here at the rescue. Plsase consdier a small donation for sweet ole Jack💖

Healing happens here. Thank you all for being a part of their journey❤️ All donations are tax deductible and we are dependent on private donations.

This is well written. And exactly why our rescues are not rushed, there’s not timeline on when they’re available for adoption. They need time to HEAL, heal at their pace! If they’re not given the time they need, the time we need to identify their trauma triggers, we are setting them up for failure AGAIN! Here they get all the time and patience they need, which has led to successful adoptions!

I don’t think people realize just how many horses out there carry trauma with them.

With that, I don’t even mean severely abused horses that have been starved, or beaten heavily. There are plenty of those around, and those usually cause a lot of outrage (as they should).

What I am talking about though, is the horses whose trauma is never really recognized as such. The ones who tolerate humans and their requests, but never learned to trust them. Those who get extremely obsessive about food which are labelled as “bossy” or ”dominant”. Those who deal with severe Separation anxiety, which are said to be “dramatic”. Those who cannot self-regulate, or co-regulate and constantly carry tension. Those who try to express their pain, which get punished for it because “just a mare”.
Those who are “perfect” until they finally get a choice.

Between Unethical weaning practices, unsuitable welfare, constantly moving homes & and ownership, and aversive training/handling approaches, most horses at some point experience trauma. And this trauma can present itself in a variety of ways. Some are more subtle than others.
Trauma doesn’t have to be this huge explosive reaction. Just like people, horses can carry trauma and move on with their lives fairly normally. It can shape their personality just like it can shape ours.
However, that doesn’t mean doing so is healthy.

The horse that has been in 6+ homes before the age of 10, and thus can’t cope with changes. That is Trauma.
The horse that has never had consistent companionship and becomes obsessive with certain herd mates. That is Trauma
The horse that has only known corrections when they tried to express their confusion, fear, or dislike, and turns from “a perfect beginner’s horse” to “Don’t touch me” the moment you stop using corrections. That is Trauma.
The horse that never had a chance to learn from other horses or connect with people and thus can’t trust people to make good choices for them, can’t self-regulate or co-regulate, and can’t think their way through a situation. That is Trauma.
The horse who was only ever fed 2 times a day and was left without food for 6 hours each night, and has thus become food-aggressive. That is Trauma.
The horse who experienced highly aversive training techniques, and thus now gets frustrated, tense and severely stressed out anytime they are handled in a similar manner. That. Is. Trauma.

Sometimes, awareness of this can be a frustration and defeating realization. I think as equestrians we are often blind to this reality, because sadly, it’s just so common to see horses like that.
It’s not until you work with young, untraumatized horses, or rehabilitated horses, that you realize: “Oh! This is how it should be!”

We are considering bringing on someone 2 mornings a week in a paid position. Preferably Monday and Friday from 9-11. It would consist of 4 stalls mucked/rebedded, 4 pens cleaned and waters filled. Must be knowledgeable/comfortable with horses and comfortable with dogs. PM us if you may be interested! There will be opportunities for other days here and there as well.

This long week wouldn’t be complete without an emergency. One of the puppies that was dumped a few months back was somehow injured this morning. She was out as always and she came up with blood pouring from her nostrils. We are at Clearview Animal Hospital getting a plan worked up for her. She is going to require surgery as her jaw is fractured. If you’d like to help, donations can be called directly to Clearview 864-442-6192

🌕Tonight is one of those nights I cannot sleep. This week has been heavy, heavy on
our hearts…Mine especially. This weekend is my birthday, Joann (founder of HH). I should be celebrating and we will I suppose. 🎉

But tonight, this morning I guess, it is after midnight and I find myself in the barn, down in the pastures checking on everyone. Today we had 2 new intakes. Both OTTB mares. One, Kuzy, is here at the main farm and was confirmed to be in foal today. The other Sundayinthesouth, Sunday, is at our large field. 🙏However, the day started at 4:30 AM with the office line ringing with someone needing to surrender 3 horses, an email with another 2, and 5 calls for dumped dogs. The amount of surrender requests already this year is staggering. We have a waiting list, we will do what we can. This week we’ve taken in 4 Minis that are surrenders and the 2 mares. Meanwhile fundraising as it always is always a guessing game. Last month our FB donations were a mere $500. So add that to the list that keeps me up at night. Praying this month is better 🙏.
💔There’s a lot of heartache that I choose not to share. From the little things, who cut their head this time or dang where’d that scratch come from, to the big things such as, Callie’s fetlock is almost touching the ground, she’s become severely neurological, her eye is shrinking, Sky’s eye is bulging and needs removed, worrying about April’s upcoming X-rays to check for OCD lesions, Whitney is presenting with mega esophagus, horses need ridden and worked, oh wait one has an abscess🤦‍♀️ …well you get the idea. Overwhelming. That doesn’t include, keeping up with the administrative and maintenance side of things, quick books, census, adoption applications, social media, website, donation letters, vet records, feed orders and find and pick up hay (Lord hay is tough this year) vehicle and trailer maintenance, volunteers (will there be any today?), what fences need fixed (again), fields to drag, waters to fill, stalls and pens to muck, the list goes on and there’s never enough hours in the day. Did I mention we all work full time jobs? 🤪Did I mention we have not taken a family vacation in 5 years? 😳We are small, nothing fancy, but we have devoted our lives, our finances, our time (no one is paid) to give every horse, goat, donkey, whatever 4 legged critter big and small that finds its way to us the best care possible.

Rescue is not for the faint of heart. Would I change it? No, absolutely not. Have I thought about it? Yes, absolutely. Will I quit? Not anytime soon, that is a promise. We simply cannot, they need us. One soul at a time. Well, sometimes 2 or 4 🤷‍♀️
💖I am thankful to all of you that are a part of our village. Each and everyone that follows our journey with these beautiful souls.
So, I know that was a lot. I try and keep things light. But tonight, this week was heavy and carrying it is overwhelming.
This weekend as I mentioned is my birthday. And it’s also $5 Friday. So I am asking to try and meet a goal of $500 to help meet some of our costs this month. A girl can dream, right? 🙏

Kuznetsov (Kuzy) arrived today. Our vet was here immediately and confirmed she is indeed in foal. Her last foal was March 2024, so she is within 2 months of foaling. She is in ROUGH shape. Kuzy is coming up on 11 years old and has switched owners several times. Since early January she’s been through auctions from MO to TX! Kuzy is severely underweight, hooves are a disaster and multiple wounds throughout her body, one of which should have had stitches. We pulled bloodwork and should know more tomorrow. Her wounds are cleaned, she’s got lots of alfalfa. MOST of all she is SAFE and will have her foal here safely with us. Kuzy’s journey of hell is over.

We have an urgent intake on the way. She’s an OTTB, that appears to be heavy bred. She was on her way to a quarantine facility when it was determined that she may be close to foaling and we were asked to take her. She’s appears to be a mare named Kuznetsov. We will need to have the vet out ASAP!

I’d like to introduce the new mini herd that we took in Sunday.
💖Little bit (small paint)She is 24 years old and the momma to Ross
💙Ross, the youngest of the group is 6 years old
💙Jim Bo, is the biggest paint mini of the group and is 19 years old. He has Cushings and is foundered.
💙Last but not least is, Brady, this sweet boy is 21 years old and blind.
The elderly couple that has had them their entire life is undergoing some medical issues and changes in their lives. We are so glad we could give them some peace of mind through these difficult days by giving their beloved Minis a safe place to land.

Our dream is a reality

As a family we have been working with rescues for almost 10 years, tirelessly devoting our time and resources to save these precious lives. A year and a half ago we moved from S. Florida and bought a small farm in SC for our children, rescued OTTB’s, and various other rescued critters. With the encouragement of close friends we filed for and received our 501c3 status March 2020. Our beloved Hasty Red is our inspiration for saving these precious souls. We met him at the rescue in Florida we volunteered at for many years. Hasty was a horrible abuse case and with the help of many he was removed from his terrible situation and landed at the rescue in Florida where our daughter fell in love with him. Hasty’s gentle spirit touches everyone that meets him.

Nurse mare foals are the most delicate of our rescues. Last year we helped 15 precious babies to safety and new homes! These young babies are unfortunately a by-product of one of the worst practices in the equine industry in which infant foals are taken away from their mothers so that the lactating mare can be used to nurse another foal of higher breeding. These babies are orphaned often days after being born and would be left to pass on without the assistance of rescues like Hasty’s Haven.

Hasty’s Haven is dedicated to saving the lives of horses. yearling and foals that were bound for slaughter, victims of starvation, neglect, abandonment and abuse. To date, Hasty's Haven Inc. has helped many Nurse Mare Foals as well as adult horses using our own funds and small donations from friends.

We are so grateful for our friends and supporters that have helped. Saving these lives is not possible with out you! Visit our website, follow our journey, every life is precious and together we can make a difference.
