Nothing like homemade ice cream!
We got an ice cream maker and made strawberry goat milk ice cream last night!
It's absolutely delicious!

We made traditional ricotta cheese out of the leftover whey.
I noticed the leftover whey from the American cheese was very milky. I remembered reading that you can reheat the whey to get ricotta("ricotta" literally means "twice-cooked") and asked fellow cheesemakers to confirm!
Then I ran it through 2 layers of butter muslin and viola! 25 ounces of Ricotta Caprino(goat milk ricotta)!! The whey is now much more translucent. I feel like we got extra mileage out of that milk haha!

The breeder we got Asli from have AKC Anatolian Shepherds available. They live far north in Maine, almost at the Canada border. They are traveling down state today to meet some families and they still have some 12 week old puppies for sale. You will not find a better combination of guard dog and loving family dog than the Anatolian Shepherd! They are bred to kill wolves in the mountains of Turkey yet they are very loving and loyal to their Shepherd and families! Asli is doing a great job guarding our sheep in their pasture at night while Samson protects the perimeter of the property!

It won't win any beauty contests because I'm still learning how to use the slicer plus I should have put it in a different mold or tripled the recipe because the slices are short, but I got about a pound and a half of goat milk American cheese from 2 gallons of milk.
It set up beautifully!
My kids and husband say it tastes exactly like store bought American cheese!
But it uses very few ingredients. We use a lot of American cheese so this is pretty exciting!

I like all of the goats to wear bells. Grayson and Heidi got their collars with bells today!
They were extra small but still a little big for these babies. We had to punch extra holes.
They'll grow into them soon!

I'm very pleased with these 2. They are excellent milkers!

We moved 4 sheep down to the neighbors at the end of town. They will spend the summer there acting like lawnmowers!

Kefir is expensive, especially organic! Thankfully it's literally the easiest dairy product to make and you can culture it right on your counter with a little store bought kefir to inoculate! I used a half cup of Lifeway organic plain kefir with 3 1/2 cups of raw goat milk. It sat on the counter for 24 hours. The next day we refrigerated it and made raspberry syrup with 2 cups of pureed raspberries and a fourth cup of sugar cooked for 5 minutes and cooled. We blended it in the food processor and it tastes perfect. My only complaint is that I should have made more!

I'm so excited to receive my cheesemaking supplies today! I wound up ordering online anyway since I've not had time to source locally.
I was given a great recipe for making American style cheese and my hopeful plans are to make cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan and romano!

We made goatmilk yogurt yesterday. Today we are making goatmilk kefir! I love making my own dairy products. I know what goes into my animals and into my products!

I forgot to share the excellent news that we got Grayson back yesterday!! Our amazing neighbors rounded him up for us!! He and Heidi are reunited and she was so happy to see him!

We are sad to report that Grayson escaped his enclosure this morning! We've been looking and all of our neighbors have our number. He was spotted this afternoon. Hopefully he will come back! Heidi misses him!

Tonight we welcome Heidi and Grayson to the farm! Grayson is the gray buckling and Heidi is the black doeling! She has a beautiful multicolored face but she's a bit camera shy!

Today I made my "Mechanic's Hands" soap. This soap is made with organic unrefined coconut oil which gives it high cleansing power! It also contains pumice for extra scrubbing power and lemon and orange essential oils! Perfect for cleansing grease and grime and "after gardening" hands! Very excited! Our lavender orpingtons are hatching!

They love when we get home and let them out to fly! Our house is a bit crazy and we live in a zoo: I've got dogs and cats running around and birds flying everywhere and lambs in the house at times, puppies being birthed in our kitchen and baby ducks and chicks hatching and brooding in the living room but it definitely makes things fun and interesting!
