Heartworms, what are they? Just like it sounds, they are worms in the heart! ❤

It is more common in dogs than in cats, and is transmitted through mosquitoes. Although your cat may not go outside, mosquitoes always find a way to get into your house. Heartworms can be potentially deadly for both dogs and cats if not caught.

How do we test for heartworm presence?

During your annual visits when your pet gets a heartworm test done! As a bonus, this test also checks for 3 other tick born illnesses.

What can you do to help prevent your pet from getting heartworms?

Prevention like Simparica Trio, ProHeart, or Tri Heart for our canine friends, and Revolution Plus for our feline friends!

What is periodontal disease and why are 80% dog and 70% of cats affected by it by the age of 3 years?🦷

Periodontal disease is in infection in the gums and jaw bones that contain the tooth. Animals are unable to brush their own teeth to remove any plaque buildup and this build up can lead to a growth of bacteria that can slowly progress and become not only painful but harmful to other organs like the heart, kidney, and liver

What can you do at home to help prevent gum disease?
Tooth brushing, if your pet allows you, with a pet friendly toothpaste!
If you pet is not tolerating tooth brushings at home your pet can get thorough dental cleanings at your veterinarian's office. Your veterinarian will check your pets teeth during their annual exam and let you know when its time to get your pets teeth clean so that they can live a long and healthier life 🦷🐱🐶

Fun Fact Friday!🤢
Have you ever noticed your pet excessively salivating during car rides or even vomiting? This can be an indication that your pet may get motion sickness. It is more commonly seen in puppies and young dogs as they are getting use to the motion and sensation of being in a vehicle and figuring out their balance during the trip. It is important to take your pets on frequent trips in the car when they are young so they can be conditioned to the car, this can help decrease the odds that they develop motion sickness as they get older.

Luckily there is a medication you can ask your veterinarian for if you pet does not get over this phase.

Give us a call today if you would like to talk to someone about medications to help your pet during travel if they get motion sickness 📞

Gastric Dilation Volvulus a.k.a GDV or Bloat 🔴
This is a life-threatening condition in dogs where the stomach flips. This twists both ends of the stomach which prevents gas from escaping, leading to gas build up in the stomach. This stops blood from the hind legs and abdomen from returning to the heart. and can lead to death fairly quickly if not caught in time. There is no known cause for this occurrence but is has been particularly noticed in deeper chested dogs such as German shepherds, boxers, great danes, saint bernards, etc.

There is a 75% chance that once your dog bloats it can occur again!

What are signs to look out for?
-Retching (attempting to vomit but not producing anything)
-Enlarged abdomen
-Salivation
-Restlessness
-Whining when abdomen is pressed due to pain

What can you do to prevent bloat?
-Surgical procedure called gastropexy where they tack the stomach to abdominal wall to reduce the possibility of it flipping
-Not letting your pet run excessively after eating or drinking excessively
-Slow feeders
-Small more frequent meals vs one meal a day

If you would like to discuss getting a gastropexy surgery done for your pet to reduce the chanced of Bloat, give us a call today!📞

Every wondered can my pet wait, or do they need to be seen right away?
This list is a good indication of least emergent to most emergent.

🟢Primary care visits are important but may be able to wait a couple of days to be seen if your pet is not experiencing any potential life-threatening conditions.

🟡Urgent care cases may need to be seen sooner rather than later due to being a little more severe and having the potential of becoming worse or life threatening in a short amount of time

🔴Emergency is that your pet should be seen right away!

You can always call ahead to see if we are able to fit your pet into our schedule depending on the severity of the symptoms of your pet as we are equipped to fit in most urgent care cases as well 📞

Fun Fact Friday!🤧
Animals can have allergies. There are 3 types of allergies your veterinarian may talk to you about.
- Ectoparasites that could be causing any sort of itching and irritation. This is normally managed with flea/tick prevention.
- Food allergies. It is important to keep your pet on a single protein source for the reason that if you pet develops allergies as they age, we can determine if it is a single protein that could be causing the flare up.
- Enivronmental. Environmental can be tricky because it can be ANYTHING! It can be the grass or pollen outside, candles, plug ins, dust, mold, detergents, and the list can go on and on!

If you would like to discuss your pets' allergies further, give us a call today to get something scheduled!📞

Did you know cats do better in pairs?🐱
Although cats seem very solitary, research does show that cats benefit from living in pairs. Having a feline friend can prevent loneliness, boredom, destructive behavior, excessive meowing, and even depression

It is important to note that an older cat may be used to having their own space and an additional cat may not be beneficial.

Stop by the clinic today to take a look at a couple of kittens we have up for adoption! (Not shown in the picture below)

Its National Popcorn Day!🍿
If you needed another reason to eat popcorn, today is the day! Not only you can enjoy this delicious snack but your cat and dog too!

As long as it is plain, air-popped popcorn, it is considered safe for your furry friend. Make sure to avoid any popcorn that is processed, seasoned, or buttered. Some seasonings are not safe for your pet to consume and its best to be safe.
