-Your pet may also suffer from an allergic reaction if ingested

What can you do?
-Teach your pet the "leave it" command🐶
-Be diligent on walks if your pet is known to eat things
-Supervised outside time

If you notice any abnormal symptoms such as prolonged vomiting, diarrhea, or inability to keep food or water down please contact your veterinarian to get your pet seen.📞

❗If your pet is actively choking make sure to take them to the nearest Urgent Care or Emergency Clinic ASAP❗️

How is your pet's anxiety assessed at the clinic?🐶😺
By using what is known as a FAS (Fear, Anxiety, and Stress) scale. This allows your veterinary staff to assess how stressed your pet may be during their visit and what interventions may need to be taken.

This can include...
- Assessing possible stressors (sound, sight, smell, and touch)
- Handling your pet in a more comfortable manner for them
- Offering treats as a reward/ distraction
- Stopping the visit and recommending medications
- Sedation if your pet is too fearful and aggressive

This may include recognizing if your pet is more anxious or protective in your presence or if your pet is more comfortable with you in the room. Your veterinary staff should be able to assess which option would bring the most comfort to your pet and make recommendations.

Playing "veterinarian" at home can help your pet get comfortable with some of the procedures done at the clinic. This includes...
- Playing with your pet's feet
- Handling your pet's ears
- Looking at your pet's eyes
- Checking your pet's teeth and handling their muzzle
- Hugging your pet
- Training yet pet to "sit" and "lay down"

If you would like to learn more about how your pet may be restrained at the veterinary clinic, have your veterinary staff demonstrate what to practice at home on your next visit. It's best to start them when they are young, but you can always try to positively reinforce common restraints at home so they aren't as stressed when it is done at the clinic 🐾

Being "prepared" for your pet's veterinary visit may include bringing in your pet hungry. This is so that they are more willing to accept delicious treats from our veterinary staff to positively reinforce being at the veterinary clinic and any treatments that may be done on them. 🐾

You may bring in your pet's favorite treat or special dietary treats if your pet is on a specific diet. 🐶

*This may not be feasible for all pets depending on your pet's medical conditions. Please make sure to speak with your veterinarian if your pet has a medical condition in which they have to eat before coming in📞

Now that you have your cat in the carrier how can you make the transportation as stress-free as possible?😺

-Cover the carrier with a towel or a light blanket
-Place familiar-smelling objects such as toys, blankets, or treats in the carrier with them
-Transporting cats in their own separate carrier if multiple cats are traveling
-When carrying your cat in the carrier make sure to carry it like it's fragile; close to your chest and with both hands.
-Avoid swinging the carrier and carrying it like a suitcase

If your cat is too stressed with getting into the carrier, car rides, and/or being at the veterinarian, make sure to give us a call to discuss possible options to give to your pet prior to doing so to ensure that they are as comfortable as possible during the process 📞

05/29/2024

We all know getting the cat in the carrier at home vs the vet can be a nightmare. How can you make the carrier a not-so-scary place for your cat?😺
-Train your kittens while they're young! Allow them to sleep in their carriers
-Leave the carrier out at all times
-Do NOT put the carrier in a hidden location to only take out when visiting the evil vet
-Choose a location where your kitty already likes to rest

Making the carrier a more fun place can also help your cat feel more relaxed when having to go in the carrier and while in the carrier. You can do this by...
-Putting your cat's favorite things around the carrier; toys, treats, catnip, etc
-Playing with your cat around the carrier
-Placing something that smells like you or your home in the carrier
-Feed your cat in or near the carrier

Choosing the right carrier can make veterinary visits less stressful for your feline friend.

What makes a cat carrier the right carrier?😺
- It can be hard or soft
- Big enough that your cat can lie down and turn around but not too big that your cat can slide around
- Carriers with at least two openings; top and side
- Carrier that can easily be taken apart or slide out

Having the right carrier can help make your cat feel more secure and safe during transport. It can also help your veterinary staff find a fear-free way to handle your cat to avoid overstressing them🐾

If you have ever heard "We weren't able to..." by one of our doctors or technicians it means our staff is advocating for your pet. It means that your pet was too stressed at the clinic to get a certain service done and instead of causing your pet to be more stressed we recommend an alternative to make the visit less stressful or coming in another day once the stress has gone down.

By doing so, we try to make sure that...
- Your pet doesn't get hurt or hurt anyone else
- Your pet does not continue to have stressful visits which can build up anxiety over time with coming into the clinic
- The stress does not end up making your pet develop fear aggression which may lead to them being sedated for simple procedures like exams or nail trims

We want to make your veterinary visit as least stressful as possible for both you and your pet 🐾

🐢Did you know...
-Sea turtles dont retract into their shells like other turtles

-There are over 350 species of turtles, including salt water turtles, fresh water turtles, and some that weigh hundreds of pounds.

-Turtles can hold their breaths underwater for long periods, but sea turtles need to come up to the surface for air regularly.

-They are older than snakes and alligators, dating back to the age of the dinosaurs, around 200 million years ago.
