The Sandhills Working Dog Club

The Sandhills Working Dog Club We are a group of dog enthusiasts working together to obtain success in dog sport! My first job as a trainer was over 18 yrs ago.........wow! lol! Thank You
(22)

I started working with dogs at a very young age, as a child growing up in Chile I have fond memories of my 3rd birthday when I was gifted a German shepherd puppy as well as a Chihuahua from two relatives who obviously did not coordinate this with my mother. On my 17th birthday my mother bought me my first Doberman, from this point on I was in love with the breed. Two years later I imported my firs

t dogs from Europe and then selectively bred my first litter. Since then I have bred, imported and exported dogs to Germany, Holland, Canada, Kuwait and Argentina as well as throughout the United States. I have been involved with working/performance dogs as well as show dogs of multiple breeds and look forward to keep expanding my K-9 knowledge, I feel that one should never limit themselves in this field. I have competed at regional and national events with Dobermans, Bullmastiffs and American Pit-Terriers. My on the job experience ranges from working as a kennel attendant in high kill animal shelters, grooming in various shops (both chain store and independent) as well as working as a vet-tech at state of the art animal hospitals specializing in Orthopedics and Cancer research at the University of Rochester, NY. I also served in the United States Army Infantry and Special Operations with multiple combat deployments. That was a long time ago! since then I have been involved in Schutzhund, weight pulling and conformation. Currently I am working with three young dogs to achieve titles in Schutzhund. As of mid 2010 I decided to start my own K-9 equipment manufacturing business which specializes in Law Enforcement/Military equipment as well as boutique items for all dogs. I hope to expand this business to its full potential, check out Zuka K9. I have been invited as a vendor to multiple local and regional working dog events as well as being invited to participate as an equipment vendor at the 2011 GSD Masters which will showcase the best working GSD's in the world. Since this is my website I will close this first page with what I believe in and where I stand with the dogs.

1. God, Mother and Country

2. Good training practices, always listen to others. (whether good or bad)

3. Humility (something seldomly seen in dogsports)

4. Experience is gained by actual experience (tired of hearing, "I have been doing this for thirty years") Is it truly 30 yrs experience or 1 yr of experience times 30!

5. I know where I stand with my dogs (ability/health, substance). As tough as it sounds, Iam very honest with myself by putting everyone to the test in both working abilities as well as health certifications.

This past weekend, The Sandhills Working Dog Club welcomed the newest and tiniest club member with a “Puppy Shower;” after a long, 14-month wait, baby Malinois Hilda has finally arrived to build a life with handler Hans! Big thanks to everyone who came out and supported this event!

While celebrating Hilda’s arrival was certainly a highlight on Saturday, we stayed on task with training, mitigating the heat with shade canopies, a cooling pool, plenty of fans and shorter protections sessions. All in all, it was amazing day of training and comaraderie!

Some of my favorite shots happen after the routine is complete, when the work is done and the pressure is off. When handler and dog can finally relax and celebrate their accomplishments. These moments allow a glimpse into the dog-handler relationship, the bond they share with one another.

Justin Emery and Rainer had a lot to celebrate this weekend; together they earned points in the range of the 90’s in each phase of the trial. Beautiful performances by an awesome team; congratulations on achieving your IGP3!

Just ask helper Julio Hernandez: when the dog is keen for the fight, you don’t just see it, you feel it.

Without doubt, Alexei Turkin’s Magnus enjoyed facing off with Julio during the trial this weekend. As with the obedience phase, power, precision and control were hallmarks during protection. Alexei and Magnus earned a well-deserved 98 points in the final phase of the IGP1.

After each trial— and rightfully so— we celebrate the competitors for their accomplishments on the field. But to be fair, not one of these competitors would have experienced success without a team of supporters and mentors behind the scenes. The training director. The coaches, spotters and group members. The training and trial helpers. The encouraging friends and fellow handlers. The spectators willing to drive long distances and brave the cold to just to give moral support. The volunteers who managed the parking lot, brought snacks and beverages on trial day and herded all the cats (and their paperwork, lol) throughout the day. BIG thanks to everyone who contributed to our team members’ special day. 🤗 Finally, but not least of all, so much gratitude to our judge, Craig Groh. I honestly don’t know how you do it. Thank you so much for supporting our club!

That first IGP trial. Nervous butterflies fluttering in your belly, nerves virtually tingling with excitement and maybe a little fear. Time to put your training to the test. Time to step into the arena, all eyes on you. There is nothing like it. The adrenaline rush. The trepidation. And finally, relief. It is done. And everyone goes home with the very best dog. 💕 Congratulations, teams! Can’t wait to see you on the field again!

Chilly, overcast and breezy weather conditions did not dampen IGP competitor optimism as they huddled together on trial morning, caffeinated beverages in hand and hope in their hearts.

It was tracking hour; for many of us obsessed with the sport of IGP, a quiet, reflective time just after sunrise. A time of silent communion with nature and our favorite training partners. A time to forget the world.

On a perfect tracking day, the air barely stirs and the grass is heavy with dew; unfortunately, this weekend’s tracking conditions were a bit drier and windier than ideal, but experienced competitors prevailed over these challenges. Huge congratulations to everyone who achieved their goals this weekend and to everyone who stepped onto the field! Job well done!

Tracking is the least flashy and least exciting IGP (Schutzhund) discipline, but it is equally important in evaluating the dog’s natural talents and the training he has received. It is also the most time-intensive investment in the dog’s training program; only the most dedicated and talented teams will be successful in this phase. The dog must learn to search each and every footstep calmly and methodically and find all of the articles the track layer has emplaced. He must be trained do this in a variety of weather conditions, in different types of terrain. He must learn how to navigate 90 degree corners and ignore all distractions, including wildlife he may encounter along his track. Club member Brooke and her Malinois Bane are absolutely rocking their training program and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish together!

I am so incredibly proud of everything our club members have accomplished in recent months; so much progress, so many obstacles overcome, so much effort put forth— and I am especially proud of their teamwork and contributions to the club as a whole. Achieving any degree of success in Schutzhund (IGP) is impossible without the support of good helpers, coaches, spotters, line holders and a crew of people willing to jump in to help with anything else that is required, from setting up blinds to bringing drinks and snacks. We honestly could not ask for better club members. I appreciate ya’ll!!

Another awesome Sandhills Working Dog Club Schutzhund/IGP trial in the books! A HUGE thank you to the indomitable Stanley Craddock for his characteristic impartial and keen judging; he definitely won’t miss a thing, but you can always count on detailed and fair feedback during the critique. If you don’t walk away a little smarter about this sport, you didn’t pay attention!

I would be remiss not to mention all of the folks on scene who made sure this trial flowed smoothly: The HMFIC, Mashal Shekib; our fabulous trial secretaries, Rebecca Winter Daniels and Breanna; our gunfire guru David; our gatekeeper Beverly Coulter Cardella; our traffic controller and parking coordinator Alexandra Jones; all of group member volunteers (Terry Chamberlain, Nick, Cathy Phillips Alexander Hans, John Foust Rachel, Ashley, Rahki, Brooke Bell); bringers of food and beverages (Kathy Westdyke, Deborah Ruth, Beverly, Hans); and last but not least, our protection helpers Julio Hernandez and Jamall Cash. If I forgot to mention anyone who supported this trial— please forgive me— my brain has been misfiring all weekend, lol!
And FINALLY— to all of you who stepped out onto the field this weekend— CONGRATULATIONS!!!! 🍾🎉🎊🎈 Chip Hasty, Ali Stocks— IGP3 looks good on you!!!!

Incredibly, all NINE of our BH teams who stepped onto the field this weekend achieved their goal, passing the written test, the obedience and the traffic portion. WAY TO GO!!!!

More photos to follow soon!

In less than two weeks, 19 teams will take the field to compete for much coveted IGP titles, some trialing for the very first time. Will all of their hard work pay off? Hundreds of early mornings spent tracking at sunrise; innumerable hours spent driving to teach and practice obedience at various locations; countless hot afternoons sweltering in the sun, battling mosquitos and gnats, waiting for a short protection session with the training director. Will it all come together on trial day? Stay posted to find out! In the meantime, best of luck to all of our competitors! You’ve got this!

The sport of Schutzhund, in my view, epitomizes the partnership between human and canine. The handler provides direction and guidance in the form of training; the dog provides innate capabilities required to perform all three phases of this sport (tracking, obedience and protection work). I can’t help but marvel at the dogs’ intelligence, speed, power, courage and most of all, their willingness to cooperate with their human counterparts.

Presenting one of The Sandhill’s Working Dog Club most integral club members: Ali Stocks. If you’ve paid attention, you’ll note Ali appears in a number of photographs, and most often, not even with her own dog. Most frequently, you will see her as a line holder, coaching and assisting another handler. Alternatively you’ll find her working a large, powerful dog, wearing her indistinguishable pink helper pants. (Not her original first choice in color, but I think the pants suit her!) She is everything a training director could hope for in a club members and IGP handler. Thank you for everything you do, Ali!!!

At approximately 8 months old, the genetics behind Baron’s tenacity, intelligence, full grips and prey drive are becoming more and more evident; he has the potential to have a very promising career in the sport of IGP— or any sport he and his handler aspire to, for that matter. Like his sire Caiser, he is all the right kinds of crazy, lol!
