Compounded medication is a topic that veterinarians are frequently asked about, but we often struggle to explain, as the rules are very complicated. There are some situations in which compounded drugs are extremely useful and legal to use, and we have to be careful that we prescribe them in a manner that is in the best interest of the safety of our patients, while also following the laws set down by the FDA. Some examples:

1) It is illegal to prescribe a compounded medication for the sole purpose of saving money (for instance compounded pergolide suspension instead of Prascend tablets, or cheap compounded molasses-flavored bute powder when an FDA-approved orange-flavored bute powder exists).

2) It is illegal to prescribe a compounded version of a drug when an FDA-approved version is already available for that species in the same formulation and dosage (for instance compounded omeprazole granules or paste instead of Gastrogard paste).

3) Compounded medications may not be legally used in food animal species (it doesn't matter if that specific animal is meant to be eaten; if it is a sheep/goat/cow/pig/etc. its is considered a food animal). There are some small exceptions that come with a very very long withdrawal time, but this is not common. I'm looking at you, illegally compounded toltrazuril for coccidia in goats (we can use off-label equine Marquis instead, if species-specific medications like Corid have proven unsuccessful).

I realize this is a confusing topic, so I am attaching a compounding FAQ by the AVMA. Feel free to comment below with any questions!

Heads up regarding a change to medication rules for Regumate/altrenogest at USEF shows.

The U.S. Equestrian Federation has announced that as of Dec. 1, the use of progestogens in stallions and geldings while competing at USEF-licensed competitions will be prohibited under Chapter 4, Drugs and Medications, of the USEF rulebook. Progestogens are still permitted in mares.

Do you know how to recognize a "summer sore"? I've been seeing a lot of cases lately, including the two horses in the photos (thanks to the owners for letting me use the images here). Check out this article from The Horse, that gives an easy-to-understand overview of the parasitic cause of the disease, including its lifecycle, diagnosis, and treatment.

Looking for someone to help out around our small farm property in Pottstown a few days a week, responsibilities would be varied and mostly outdoors (yard work, helping my other half with construction projects, farm maintenance, etc.) but would not include animal handling. Must be a reliable adult male (sorry ladies, Iā€™m strong and my partner still needs a man to help him with projects) able to lift at least 50 pounds, have own transportation, no drugs/alcohol and keep your political views to yourself when here. Some experience helping with construction and yard work/landscaping would be helpful. Paid hourly each day. Contact me on FB or at 484-447-6945.

Grateful to have been a passenger aboard the Murder Hollow coach, Tantivy, at The Devon Horse Show last week, my first visit inside the Dixon Oval as a participant. The class went off after 10 PM, so no good action photos, unfortunately.
Congratulations to the whole team for a week well done!

Using Assure Guard Gold for excess f***l water syndrome? šŸ’©

I just found out that Arenus has a colic coverage program (unfortunately for standard-sized horses only, not minis) that reimburses for medical AND surgical colics up to $10,000! That means your on-farm emergency colic visits may be covered if you are giving the supplement! Check out the details below to enroll.

Are you looking for equine digestive support? Improve digestion and get peace of mind with the Arenus Colic Assurance Program. Learn more.
