Nice, blonde pedestal mount went home today. The back on this one was covered with a piece of sentimental fabric. While I can sculpt rock or tree bark on the exposed side of a pedestal mount, this was a great way to incorporate family and preserve memories. You have an idea for your mount, let me know, we’ll find a way to make it happen

A pedestal mount is a great alternative to a traditional shoulder mount. This form shows a few more inches of shoulder and makes the deer look larger and gives him character.

Soft Tan Prices

Took in a couple ducks today, so figured I would show how I package them for the freezer.

This is what you can do as a hunter to preserve your duck for your taxidermist.

Wrap each foot/leg with a wet paper towel ensuring all the skin and feather/skin junction is in contact with the wet paper towel.

Wrap the bill with a wet paper towel ensuring the wet paper towel is in contact with all the skin as well as the feather/bill junction, even over the eyes is fine, and tuck it beside the body… please DO NOT freeze the head straight out. When they get put in my deep freezer with everything else, it exposes the neck/head to possibly break off when I need to dig around for specimens.

Place in a bag that will fit (freezer zip locks preferred if they fit) squeeze all the air out and seal. If you need to use a trash bag or a larger bag that does not have a seal, just do your best to get all the air out and wrap the excess bag around the bird. You can then tape the bag so it sits tight against the body.

Doing all this will extend the life of your specimen in the freezer, reduce freezer burn to key areas which makes a better mount as well as making my job easier. A good mount starts with you! 🙂

We’re halfway through this crazy week. Weather didn’t treat us well at the beginning along with that super bright moon and hunting was a little weird to say the least 😆 the cold is finally here, good luck the rest of the week!

Pretty excited about the new hardwood supplier I decided to try. The place I used to order from stopped making hardwood products, so I had to explore.

I have many new options of different kinds of hardwoods- cypress, walnut, cedar, pecan etc (not all are pictured) and they seem to be excellent quaility. These are all catered toward euro mounts. These come at an additional cost to the euro mount.

Soft tans are done a bit differently than tans for actual mounts. The hide will stiffen up rock solid on specimens tanned for Taxidermy.

Dry/Soft tans stay pliable and soft. Different tanning chemicals and processes must be taken to achieve this desired affect. I had a very lengthy conversation with the owner of the chemical company I buy my tanning solutions from to learn the proper way to professionally tan soft skins in house.

Each step plays a key role in preserving the hide. This cow certainly was a learning experience, but rewarding to see the results in the end. I’ve learned ways to make the process better (and hopefully easier lol) for next time.
