Tide and I have put in slow, steady work for going on two years and did her first LD at Cuyama XP last Saturday. My goal was to finish on a happy, healthy horse and have fun! This ride has a reputation for its beauty and the scenery did not disappoint. The LDs and 50’s started together and I was thoroughly impressed with Tide keeping her cool and walking out of camp in a large pack. We found ourselves riding with Julie Best and her beautiful young mare Afira, who was doing her first LD as well. We had the same goal and pace in mind, and ended up riding together all day! Meeting new friends on trail is such an unexpected and sweet part of this sport.
Tide was a rockstar. Nothing phased her, from tough terrain, multiple stream crossings, or being passed by other horses. She never quit or said no. Even when she’d feel tired on a steep hill she would drop to her huge power walk and keep trucking. There was one short but incredibly steep section that I was skeptical of going up, but then again, it wouldn’t be a Duck ride if there wasn’t at least one part that made you question your sanity! We hopped off to hand walk up, and Tide powered straight to the top while I ended up tailing her (something we haven’t practiced yet but became necessary in the moment as her walk is so fast), and she pulled me to the top no questions asked.
We walked a lot and I was fairly certain we were at the back of the pack, with both Julie and I thinking we might be in contention for the turtle award. We got to the finish on peppy ponies and were shocked to learn we were 8th and 9th!! Top 10’ing Tide’s first LD was honestly not the plan, but for it to happen organically and for her to finish feeling and looking so good was incredible. I am so proud of that mare and know what a treasure she is. She traveled, camped, and competed like a professional. We still have areas to work on and improve, but could not have asked for a better first outing!
My husband Andy and our dog Hazy came on the adventure with us, which always makes my heart the happiest. I don’t know what I’d do without this man who helps pack, drive, and keeps me fed and alive! I’m a lucky lady ❤️
