Work harder > Dream smaller.

I’ve always been one to set an earlier alarm, pick up an extra job, and to find the ways to make something happen rather than focus on the impossibilities. Is it sometimes exhausting? Yes. Is it worth it? YES.

These days I’ve been chasing new adventures, mountains, trails, and experiences. Thanking my lucky stars for this little freak of a horse who loves it all just as much ❤️

🏁 2025 NASTR 75 Ride Recap 🐎

The short version: this was Griffin’s longest distance, and overall, he absolutely crushed it to finish in 7th place on a grueling course. I am so proud of this horse and still have to pinch myself that I get to be his partner and person!!

The long version: I cannot believe I had such an enjoyable 75 mile ride! My husband, dog, and two of my best friends were there, so it was pretty much a perfect weekend before the ride even started! Griffin was on fire for our first three loops. He’s always a bit spicy, but he was as close to perfect as it gets. Eating the hills and navigating the deep sand and rocks with ease. We left for our fourth and final loop already at 50-something miles, farther than Griff had ever been asked to go. On top of that, we were alone and had been for quite a bit of the day. He trucks along pretty good by himself, but I think a buddy on that last loop would have lifted his spirits. Griff hit a wall leaving camp, to be expected but still a bit disconcerting when you’re in the desert alone 🤣

I hopped off and hand walked quite a bit of the hills that loop, telling Griffin I believed in him and that we could do this. He caught a second wind and finished strong, and I felt a little silly, but I had to choke back a tear as we came into camp. This horse has been such an underdog; he’s peculiar, guarded, and doesn’t trust easily. But I know I’ve become his person, and the partnership we’ve built is something I don’t take for granted.

Griffin loves this sport and I love getting to do it with him. With every race I learn more about how to better manage him. He’s an incredible athlete that will give you everything, and I always want to make sure I’m supporting him 100%.

Thank you management and NASTR for an amazing ride!! Thank you to everyone who helped support or offer guidance this weekend. Thank you Griffy for the best 75 miles I’ve ever had, even including my hill hikes at the end ❤️

Griffin, my little old man with the biggest heart ❤️

I’m still unpacking from NASTR 75 and will do a full write up once I have time, but I’m so proud of this horse.

We had to carry each other through this ride. It was his first time at this distance and when he hit a wall, I hopped off to take the lead. Most of the day, he powered along like the winged Griffin he is.

Griffin can be a strange little beast, but he’s my strange little beast and I’ve grown to love and appreciate him more than I thought possible since he came into my life this January.

Thank you buddy for an amazing 75 miles!

Kristina Chesterman 50 Ride Recap 🐎🌲⛰️

To say I’m impressed with Griffin is an understatement! Our partnership is still fairly new, having just begun in January of this year. Each race has been a test to see how he feels at different distances, over different terrain, his hill climbing, and speed. It’s all equally been a test for myself on how to best manage and support him. This was a deceptively hard ride yet we went fairly fast, with Griffin on fire all day finishing in the top ten. This boy absolutely loves to race, and though we’ve been having a few discussions on speed for the first loop, he’s seriously perfect.

He vetted through with mostly A’s all day but with slowly quieting gut sounds which is unusual for him in my experience so far. His food intake was good the night before and throughout the race, but I believe his water intake was mediocre. I really strive to finish with all A’s or close to it, and two C’s on gut sounds has me reexamining the ride and my routine. I still felt he finished well and in good health, but with room for improvement. There’s always something to learn in this sport!

Griffin unloaded at home and ran around his pasture, happy as a clam. With each ride we bond more and this quirky bay gelding digs himself deeper into my heart. He was not at all what I expected, but somehow everything I needed. Thank you Griffin for another amazing 50 miles, priceless memories, for pushing me to want to grow and be better, and thank you for the new blisters and arm workout I got during those first twenty miles 🤣

This trail was gorgeous and well marked, ride management was fantastic, and we will definitely be back next year ❤️

One year ago today my baby girl Dreamer entered the world! Seriously, where did the time go?

I didn’t want to be in these photos but we were having a birthday hat malfunction which required me holding it on, along with a very un-Dreamer-like but totally reasonable one-year-old mild tantrum because she was taken from breakfast for her photoshoot 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

In all seriousness, Dreamer has been simply the best from the moment she was born. I’ve been there from her first breath to every other one of her firsts, something I’ll never get tired of or take for granted. I love you little turtle ❤️🐢

What has Tide been up to since her first LD?!

Well, the abundant spring grass proved to be too alluring for my beautiful spotted chunk. Despite cutting her hay, she continued hoovering every available blade of grass 🫠

I’d noticed her feeling slightly uncomfortable (plus some obvious weight gain), and the amazing Dr. Marty Gardner confirmed the beginnings of laminitis last week. I’m so thankful it was caught early before permanent damage could occur. Tide is heartbroken to have lost full time pasture privileges (until everything dies during summer), but she’s already lost weight and is moving better. We’re giving her some time to get her feet feeling back to 100% then will resume our training and conditioning!

I spent some time being down on myself for even letting it get this far, but I’m not allowing that train of thought to keep going. We live, we learn, we make mistakes, and we try to do better. This experience is another valuable piece of the puzzle on how to manage and best support Tide for life, and I can’t be sad about that.

So for now we are dieting, going back to basics, and looking at some fall season rides!

American River Classic 50 🐎🏁⛰️

Last weekend Griffin and I took part in the 50th anniversary of the American River Classic! This is pretty close to a hometown ride for us, and I couldn’t miss it. I really wanted to use the ride as a test of where Griffin’s fitness was on hills since the ride is known for its significant climbs, and just like Derby two weekends ago, my intention wasn’t to race.

Griffin had other plans 🤣 this boy is feeling fit and man oh man, does he LOVE to race. He really comes alive out there, it’s just so dang fun to be his partner. We started mid-pack which infuriated Griff, but I finally let him go a little bit about halfway through the first loop and he quickly made up a lot of ground. Each loop was beautiful and well marked, the wildflowers were blooming, and I was just happy to be out there with my horse.

We finished 11th out of 64 starters, with great vettings (including a few very dramatic “drop and rolls” by Griffin in the vet lines 🤣), and a very happy horse. I learn more about him every time we go out, and each time I’m more impressed.

Thank you for another amazing 50 miles Griffin!

PS: maybe next ride I’ll put my arm down 🫠💁🏼‍♀️ or is this my trademark?!

Taking a small break from all of the endurance content and going back to my roots with a Peggy Slew update!!

I was the “thoroughbred girl” for so long, it’s been an interesting shift to find myself not doing that full time. It is a big goal to continue with thoroughbreds in the future, and I’m so happy to have Peggy in my herd, my priceless OTTB mare. The heart, drive, work ethic, and temperament of the thoroughbred will always captivate me.

I transitioned my horses this year from steel shoes to glue on’s, which has been fantastic for Tide and Griffin. Peggy was doing well in them too, but they were just too much shoe for what she’s doing. Additionally, her front feet grow fast and flat, and we wanted to keep her on a shorter trim cycle. This all led to Peggy transitioning to going barefoot, and wearing front boots for rides! We are just getting back into the swing of things after letting her feet adjust, and I’m SO HAPPY with how she’s feeling.

Biggest thank you to for making my horse’s feet look and feel their best, and for never leaving me high and dry when I need help or have a shoeing mishap 🙌🏼

Looking forward to the future with my Peggy girl 💕

My first 50 with Griffin! This boy is something else; I’m feeling so lucky to have him in my life. He had an incredible start to endurance with his previous owner Leilani, and the more I get to know him the more I adore him and come to realize how gifted he is.

Saturday morning was freezing but Griffy was on fire! Since I’m still getting to know Griffin and shooting for some other goals with him this year, we aimed for a more moderate pace despite the terrain being super tempting to fly on. I don’t think Griffin was pleased to be held back, but he behaved and was perfect all day.

Anytime I clucked, Griffin would leap forward ready to go, and was still perky all the way to the finish line. He vetted through fantastic all day, and looked ready to keep going at the end which was the goal. We ended up 16th out of 60 something which is actually just about where I wanted to be!

Thank you to management for an organized, well marked, and fun ride! Thank you to Andy who came with me again; he’s always been the best husband but is now turning into the best ride camp husband! Biggest thank you is always to my horse; Griffin, you are a gift my friend ❤️

Tide and I have put in slow, steady work for going on two years and did her first LD at Cuyama XP last Saturday. My goal was to finish on a happy, healthy horse and have fun! This ride has a reputation for its beauty and the scenery did not disappoint. The LDs and 50’s started together and I was thoroughly impressed with Tide keeping her cool and walking out of camp in a large pack. We found ourselves riding with Julie Best and her beautiful young mare Afira, who was doing her first LD as well. We had the same goal and pace in mind, and ended up riding together all day! Meeting new friends on trail is such an unexpected and sweet part of this sport.

Tide was a rockstar. Nothing phased her, from tough terrain, multiple stream crossings, or being passed by other horses. She never quit or said no. Even when she’d feel tired on a steep hill she would drop to her huge power walk and keep trucking. There was one short but incredibly steep section that I was skeptical of going up, but then again, it wouldn’t be a Duck ride if there wasn’t at least one part that made you question your sanity! We hopped off to hand walk up, and Tide powered straight to the top while I ended up tailing her (something we haven’t practiced yet but became necessary in the moment as her walk is so fast), and she pulled me to the top no questions asked.

We walked a lot and I was fairly certain we were at the back of the pack, with both Julie and I thinking we might be in contention for the turtle award. We got to the finish on peppy ponies and were shocked to learn we were 8th and 9th!! Top 10’ing Tide’s first LD was honestly not the plan, but for it to happen organically and for her to finish feeling and looking so good was incredible. I am so proud of that mare and know what a treasure she is. She traveled, camped, and competed like a professional. We still have areas to work on and improve, but could not have asked for a better first outing!

My husband Andy and our dog Hazy came on the adventure with us, which always makes my heart the happiest. I don’t know what I’d do without this man who helps pack, drive, and keeps me fed and alive! I’m a lucky lady ❤️
