While turning over the compost we found a Northern Prairie Skink! Not something we were expecting, but very interesting to learn about.
Our mulberries started ripening which provided delicious treats for us and the chickens. We also harvested some of our peas and cabbage heads before the high heat expected today (107°) and throughout this next week.
We love this time of year getting to eat food from the garden and around the property. Tonight we tried a new dish and were able to use only homegrown foods for a delicious dinner that the boys devoured! It made my heart so full knowing exactly what was on our plate and seeing all our work, sweat, and long hours paying off.
We are getting closer to harvesting cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beets, and beans! I can’t wait!

Our next video looks at our suburban garden before we moved. This was recorded mid July, after we had seen and fallen in love with our homestead property and had started the process of selling the city home. Just a month later everything was harvested, canned, cleaned up, and we got our first backyard chicken egg!

Please check out the journey- https://youtu.be/nqmmSzMaYhA

Today we take a look at the city garden that started the homesteading dream for us! Corey was able to capture the crops we had during the summer of 2021, bef...

We are finishing up our garden plans and will get a video this weekend to share our plans! We need to add more raised beds to fit new plant varieties we’ve found. Can’t wait to get everything started!

It was another great day of exploring in the snow and following tracks- we found deer, mouse, rabbit, bird, coyote, and of course chicken prints! The corn is growing quite a bit inside the window; with a 90% germination rate! What a beautiful day at home.

This weekend went way too fast and busy as always! We were excited to come home Friday to the Meyer Lemon tree Corey had ordered for me. However, we found it not looking so good after the cold travels and after repotting, giving it some water, and sunlight it is still not looking well. Hopefully she can bounce out of it, if anyone can save her it's Corey! After all, he did germinate glass gem corn, in January, in 3 days. They've grown quite a bit in a week's time! 🌱

It was a nice weather reprieve for the chickens after this frigid week, but still a little chilly for our liking. 🥶 We spent time outside visualizing the garden, food forest, and berry patch. Corey also trimmed some of the tree line to create an arch into the prairie area behind the backyard. The boys were great helpers collecting all the limbs for their own shelter! The chickens loved us being home and getting to spend time outside as well.

We did spend quite a bit of time inside and I'm happy to share we got our *first draft* of the garden plans done and a calendar mapped out for seed starts indoors and out! We decided on using google sheets to lay out the new garden space after trying the Old farmer's almanac garden planner to get some beginning information. It worked better for our needs and allowed us to edit the row layout frequently. 😆

What a beautiful Friday! The wind chill and temps today were warmer than the last three days and the girls were very appreciative! We had a wonderful sky and got a couple eggs before they frozen to bring in the house.
