Kittens grow so fast. You want them to gain around 10 grams every 24 hours. This guy has gained 29 in 48 hours. He was nearly 1/3 bigger than his next biggest sibling when born. I think it’s safe to say he is going to be a BIG boy!!

Shimmer and her 5 kittens are doing great. She did deliver a stillborn kitten at 3:30 am. He was perfect but stillborns have been a reality of every litter. This was her 3rd stillborn in this litter. She has delivered 8 kittens so far. In Europe the breeders put their males and females on antibiotics during breeding and put the females back on antibiotics 10 days before they are due. They say this greatly reduces the number of stillborns. However, vets here and research I have done do not support giving antibiotics unless absolutely necessary during pregnancy. I hate the losses but the damage it could
do to the healthy kittens seems more of a risk.
Is she done? Probably, but she could gift us another at some point today. I will be closely monitoring her for the next few hours especially with it being a holiday. Vets will close early today and remain closed tomorrow. Luckily, we have a great emergency vet but I always prefer my regular vet!

Update on Shimmer. I will explain this again for the people who have joined this page recently. It is very common for cats to deliver some of their kittens and then take a break…even up to a couple days before delivering the rest. Shimmer is doing great. Her 5 kittens are doing great and we still feel kittens moving inside so they are doing well also. We just have to be patient and wait for her to finish the job.

I have put Shimmers birthing pool on the bed next to me…just in case. I still think it will be Sunday at the earliest before we see anything.

Shimmers temp has dropped this morning. I will be checking on her through a camera while I work today but past experience is that with her temp being down today she will likely deliver Sunday.

On Nov. 17 I weighed Shimmer when she was a few weeks into her pregnancy and she was 14.4. Today she weighed 19.4!!! She has gained 5 pounds. Average is 2-4 pounds. So I think she will have a good sized litter! This weekend I will spend some time counting heads and see what I come up with. I got it exactly right last time with 7. If it’s much more than that it gets pretty hard to find them all…

Her temp was still over 100°…barely. Once it drops below 100° we will officially be on kitten watch!!! I hope to get one more day of work done tomorrow before I lock myself in with her until she delivers.

We are having babies!!!!!

So this just happened. I haven’t experienced this exact thing before. I was vacuuming and I could hear Saphire loudly calling. So I came to see what she wanted. Seems she wants me to follow her to her birthing area and just sit by her. No panting or anything to indicate that it’s time but when I leave she follows me out and the process repeats. I may be sleeping in here tonight.
