🚨 Important Update: Leptospirosis Now a Core Vaccine for ALL Dogs
The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines have been updated to classify the leptospirosis vaccine as CORE for all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age – regardless of lifestyle, location, or breed.
Why the change?
🌆 ALL dogs are at risk—urban, suburban, and rural.
⚠️ Potentially fatal, even with treatment.
🔄 Zoonotic—it can spread from pets to humans.
🏢 Dogs in daycare and kennels also face exposure risks.

Today we wanted to shed some light on a topic that we have been discussing with a lot of our clients recently.

A few years ago, grain free diets were becoming very popular for dogs. There were different misconceptions around the idea that grains could be linked to food allergies in dogs, and therefore, feeding a grain free diet might be beneficial. Research has been done and it is proven that food allergies are almost always related to protein sources rather than grains. Less than 1% of dogs have a true grain related allergy.

In the last few years, there has been a large increase in the amount of canine (dog) patients that are being diagnosed with heart disease. Studies by Veterinary Cardiologists has proven there is a strong correlation between grain free diets and dogs developing heart disease. This includes patients that are young and healthy as well as breeds that are not predisposed to heart disease. Grain free foods cause a Taurine deficiency which has been proven to cause Dilated Cardiomyopathy ❤️‍🩹.

When choosing a food for your dog, it is important to look at the ingredients listed on the back of the bag to make sure they are truly grain inclusive. Some dogs foods can be very misleading if you just look at the front of the bag. Below is a list of commons grains that are added to dog food.

Common grains listed in grain inclusive dog foods🌾:
~Rice
~Wheat
~Corn
~Barley
~Oats
~Rye
~Soy

We would encourage you to double-check the ingredient list of the back of your dog's food bag to make sure they are eating a grain inclusive food. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our Synergy team or discuss them at your dog's next appointment🩺 .

Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day, so let’s talk BCS and weight in our pets 🐶🐱

What does BCS stand for? 🏋🏼‍♀️
Body condition score. This is a scoring system that is used to help determine the amount of fat your pet’s body has. It is similar to a BMI in humans. The BCS is designed to evaluate your specific pet and is not a one size fits all.

How does a BCS work? 📈
During an examination, veterinarians will give your pet an overall score. At Synergy, we use a 1-5 scale with 1 being emaciated and 5 being severely obese. A 3 would be an ideal body weight score.

By giving your pet a score, this allows your veterinarian to provide a plan of care to keep your pet happy and healthy.

What are we looking for to get a BCS? 👀
Upon examination, your veterinarian will be looking for a few key things in order to provide an accurate score. An ideal BCS would have a slight abdominal tuck, an “hourglass” figuring when looking down on your pet, and able to feel the ribs, pelvis, and back bone when palpating. If we are able to easily see the ribs, pelvis, or back bone, the overall BCS would drop.

Why is BCS important? ‼️
We all want our furry family members to live a long, happy and healthy life. By making sure our pets are at ideal weights, we can help decrease their risk of developing health issues down the road. Obesity in pets can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, high blood pressure, and surgical or anesthetic complications. Obesity will also decrease your pet’s lifespan.

Make sure to ask about your pet’s BCS at their next appointment with Dr. Alyse!
