Hi I'm Patrick one of the veterinary assistant at Capitol Animal Clinic. This Saturday I will be doing the Polar Plunge tor Special Olympics Nebraska. I'm asking for help to gather donations to reach or surpass my goal of raising $500. So If you would please consider donating while I go jump in a cold Holmes Lake it would be going to a great cause.

- While ticks themselves cause only mild irritation, they can carry diseases that pose a serious threat to animals and humans.

- Ticks can be prevented by regular use of tick control products.
Just pulling off a tick can leave body parts attached to your dog. Ask your veterinarian about proper tick removal and tick control.

- Illnesses transmitted by ticks can case fever, anemia, paralysis, lameness, and other symptoms.

- People can not catch Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever from infected dogs, but the same ticks that bite dogs can cause these illnesses and others if they bite humans.

- Adult ticks can live up to 3 years without blood meal.

- Ticks live on three different animals during their life.

- Most ticks spend most of their life OFF the host (animal) in the environment.

- Ticks can't jump and don't "fall from trees" as most people think, but transfer onto hosts when animals or humans walk through long grass, bushes and brush.

Lyme disease and Ehrlichiosis are bacterial infections transmitted through the bite of an infected tick and can infect both dogs and their families. . People cannot catch Lyme disease or Ehrlichiosis directly from an infected dog, but the same ticks that bite dogs can also bite humans. This means that if there are infected dogs in an area, there are infected ticks that may transmit disease to humans.

As we head into summer and spend more time outdoors with our pets, talk to your local veterinarian about testing for tick-borne diseases and year-round tick-prevention. Pet owners should be diligent about checking for ticks after spending time outdoors. Both Lyme and Ehrlichiosis are treatable with antibiotics if identified early.
