Barry Hancock (73) arrested for fentanyl trafficking in Oroville

OROVILLE, BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — Deputy Cody Sharp with the Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) conducted a vehicle stop for an equipment violation in the area of Canyon Drive and Almond Avenue in Oroville, CA on October 11th, 2025.
Deputy Sharp then had his K-9 partner “Boogie” conduct a “free air sniff” of the vehicle.
The K-9 provided a positive alert for narcotics.
Deputy Sharp then conducted a search of the vehicle and found what he believed to be a large quantity of illegal narcotics.
Agents with the Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force (BINTF) then responded to the scene.
A further search of the vehicle by BINTF Agents yielded the following evidence of fentanyl trafficking:
153 Grams of Fentanyl (Packaged in Different Weights)
2.87 Grams of M**hamphetamine
Digital Scale
Packaging (Some with Weights Written on Unused Packages)
$7,838 in US Currency (Seized per Asset Forfeiture Laws)
Other Drug Paraphernalia
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 73-year-old Barry Hancock.
Mr. Hancock was arrested and transported to the Butte County Jail for the following violations:
Possession of Fentanyl for Purposes of Sales
Transportation of Fentanyl
Additionally, with California voters approving Proposition 36 this past November, Mr. Hancock is subject to a significant enhancement of his state prison sentence upon conviction, due to the level of his fentanyl trafficking.
