In 7 days Straight Arrow Cowhorses is headed for the big stage in Amarillo with AQHA. We'll have reached one of our biggest accomplishments so far.....we'll be competing at the AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championship show! We qualified for the open all around but are competing in Open Junior Ranch Cutting and Open Junior Ranch Trail. Hip Wednesday Cat and I are draw #37 in the ranch trail on Friday the 21st and draw #26 in the ranch cutting Tuesday the 18th. I believe there will be a livestream for the show.

I'm incredibly proud of this little mare of mine ❤

We currently have an opening in our portion of our program!

Choosing a trainer for your yearling to learn basic life skills is incredibly important. The trainer needs to have patience, instill confidence in the young horse, and most importantly know what they're doing.

Here at Straight Arrow Cowhorses, yearlings learn many basic life skills that they will encounter. This includes but is not limited to halter breaking, leading, standing tied, grooming, handling feet to prepare for farrier visits, bathing, working on trail obstacles, and much more!

Another thing we also do is we break horses to hobbles, and yes that includes yearlings. This can save a horses' life if they got into a sticky situation such as tangled up in wire, fencing, casted in a stall, etc. I have hobble broke many horses and my personal horses. We do just enough lunging to where they have at least grasped the idea of what's being asked.

Yearlings are worked 4 days a week to allow 3 days for rest and soaking up what they've learned. They are fed quality hay and Dove Performance Nutrition based off of their weight.

A few of my successes with yearlings in the past are:
• 2023 Nebraska Ranch Horse Futurity High
Point Yearling Champion, money earner, and
multiple class winner.
• 2019-2020 IQHA Ranch Horse Futurity top 10
placings in yearling classes that became
AQHA money earners.

This is 30 days minimum but can go longer if the owner wishes.

Feel free message our page to discuss your training needs!

“The Perfect Horseman.

The perfect horseman isn't hard to spot.
He or she doesn't make the mistakes that others do. They've never blown a horse up by trying to hard, they've never let a horse miss his shot by by trying too little.
They never move too fast, they never move too slow. Training is always at just the right pace for their horse...the one horse they've ever owned.
They've never tied a horse out. They've never quit one at the wrong time and allowed him to develop an entitled attitude.
They don't try hobbles, and none of their horses have ever been in a wreck.
They've never used the wrong bit, and some don't believe in using bits at all.
They're confident in the many opinions they possess, and lucky for us, they're always willing to share all of those with any unsuspecting person who dares to share their imperfect journey.

Then there's you. The one who walked the rough road, made the mistakes, took lessons from top professionals and still made more mistakes.
The one who puts the time in, tests many theories, and finds out that some of them were detrimental, and others were life changing.
You ruined a horse, or ten, trying to figure out your first lead change.
You've made a horses sore from jumping too much or stopping wrong.
You taught dozens of horses to hide behind the bit or brace on your hands before you learned the true interpretation of collection... And you're still learning.
You went home crying sometimes because your ride was an absolute wreck. You didn't know the right thing to do, so you just guessed, and it ended up being the wrong thing... But now you know. You know that you don't know much, but one thing you're sure of is this...
You know that everything requires balance. The love, the respect. The quality time and the wet saddle pads. The hackamores, snaffles and bridle bits that have been tested in your hands and the mouths of the many horses you learned with.
You know that the horse comes first and that you'll both be stretched and tested in your journey to becoming a great horseman. You know how easy it is to make mistakes when you're out there trying, so you have compassion when you see a fellow traveler on the path you're walking.

Just as the perfect parent is the one who never had children, the perfect horseman doesn't exist.
The phrase itself is an oxymoron.

Don't be afraid to make the mistakes that will lead you to greatness. Perfection is a paralysis for those unwilling to learn.

And if you're tempted to publicly criticize an individual, remember this; the wise man knows much and speaks little. The fool knows little and speaks all”

I will have a training opening this month. I can add a show horse to and shows, a long yearling that is not officially 2 yet (meaning their actual birthday) for , or a tune up for discipline specific training. I compete at ARHA shows as well as AQHA shows in the VRH.
We're located right outside of Lincoln Nebraska.

Bootsie had her very first saddling the other day and it went great!! If you have yearlings that are not officially 2 years old (meaning their actual birthday) I'm still accepting them for my yearling fundamentals. Bootsie came in November for my program and was now ready for a saddle!

You'll notice I didn't ask her to get up onto a trot or a lope. When I saddle a 2 year old for the first time I won't force them to go any faster than what they're comfortable with. I want that first saddling to be a confidence booster. Bootsie was comfortable packing a saddle around at a walk. The fact she didn't feel the need to spook, bolt, and buck is a win in my book. My goal on that first saddling is to have done enough groundwork that they don't feel the need to buck. She's set up to have a successful future whichever direction she goes. I'm looking forward to keeping up with and watching this filly's future!

Bootsie here had a VERY successful first trim today! Messing with those feet before their first visit with the farrier is so important! I've always been a fan of getting colts used to hobbles, roping their back feet, and picking out their feet. Don't be afraid to mess with those feet on the babies!!
