After brushing
After brushing out the stuck undercoat, the comb and clipper glide thru like butter. I’m not going to lie, the first couple of times I groomed her I thought I was going insane because the clipper kept getting stuck. She came to me after getting shaved by another groomer and was not matted. It’s a very common thing I used to hear with new doodle clients. “They shaved her and she wasn’t matted”. Now granted, doodles going thru coat change as pups do mat extremely easy and may be shaved due to matting. Doodles do shed but typically that “shed” gets stuck in the curly coat making it not blow out like a double coated dog would. It has to get brushed out.
Just want to show you something! This is after the bath and blowout and being brushed in the tub. She is NOT matted. This is stuck undercoat. This is why doodles get shaved even if they aren’t matted by inexperienced groomers. If I were to try to put a clipper thru her now it would not go thru.See the next video…
Doodle mania continues! And these two did not disappoint! They are a lot of fun despite the battle of the brushing! 🤪. *I do not own the rights to the music on the radio!

Undercoat
This is the follow up the previous video I posted. It’s a little awkward because I was doing it with one hand while filming with the other 🤪 but this is what I mean by being able to get a comb thru the coat. The undercoat has to be brushed loose and out with a brush and then followed with a comb to make sure you got it all 😊. We call the comb the tool to “check your work” 😊
Impacted undercoat
This is what I mean when I say “stuck undercoat”. Yes this is my dog 🙈. It is very important especially in the heat and humidity of the summer to keep that undercoat under control. That is what makes your dog hot. If your dog’s coat gets in this condition it is not a good idea for them to get wet (go swimming) as that stuck undercoat does not dry and develops bacteria which can lead to hot spots and skin problems. You should always make sure the coat can “breathe” and that there is airflow to the skin. Bathing them without properly drying and removing all that undercoat does more harm than good. You should be able to run a comb thru your entire dog’s coat.
