Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

We made it through the 300 days of January, horse friends! I thought with spring approaching that I would share some of my favorite products that we use to survive the winter here on the farm. The first is this hay saving net! I found it to be just as durable as the HayChix nets and much less the price!

Netting = Knotless 4-5mm thickness Bale Size = Fits 4x5 feets Color = Black Directions & USAGE: * Please take/hang out some hay from few holes when you start feeding your horse. The horse can be very destructive if it doesnt know or have idea of what to expect or what to do if you are feeding it...

Love them but the good ones are a lot of maintenance 💕

Love them but the good ones are a lot of maintenance 💕

I have recently had some inquiries on pricing for riding lessons and the responses I have gotten back have been in surprise and/or shock that a “riding lesson” would cost that much for an hour.

I figured I would take a moment and make an educational post as to why I charge what I do for lessons as some people just simply don’t know what it cost to own a horse and have a facility to operate out of to offer said lessons.

1. My biggest upfront expense is purchasing horses for my lesson program. I have to make sure these horses are extremely broke, safe and will take care of beginner riders on up. I have to find horses who have been exposed to the world and seen it all. I have to also make sure they are forgiving and willing to do their job. Finding horses like this can be challenging and also very expensive 💲💲.

2. Feed. All the horses have to eat. 🙃 The lesson horses are all on hay 24/7 and get grained once or twice a day. This expense adds up very quickly when you are feeding four of them.

3. “Maintenance” - just like humans as we get older and our bodies start to break down, horses do the same. The lesson horses all require monthly injections to help with inflammation and arthritis, along with a daily pill to help with this as well. They get extra supplements in addition to their grain to make sure they are getting the caloric intake they need to keep up with their workload and be in the best shape possible. Everyone who knows me knows I love a chunky horse 🥰

4. Farrier care. Every 6 weeks the horses are seen by a farrier to either have their feet trimmed or if they have shoes on they get their shoes pulled and reset.

5. Vet care. Spring and fall vet visits for their yearly vaccinations and teeth float. I pray during these two visits nothing pops up that results in another vet call🤞🏻

6. Tack. You can’t ride a horse without having tack for said horse and rider. I have saddles ranging in little kids sizes all the way up to adult sizes. Halters, bridles, saddle pads, helmets, grooming supplies, etc. the list goes on and on.

7. Then comes the overhead expense of having a barn to operate out of. Electricity, water, insurance, mortgage, upkeep on said facility. Again the list goes on and on.

At the end of the day I pretty much do my lessons for “free” once all the expenses are paid for. This doesn’t bother me though because I absolutely love to watch my youth riders and adults learn and excel! ♥️🐴

Again, this post is for educational purposes for people who may not realize what all goes into being able to offer and operate a lesson program 😃

Thank you to all of my current clients who continue to support and believe in my program! I appreciate you all so much!

BY April Bilodeau For most horse owners, the barn is their happy place. The place they go to take a deep breath, spend some time with their horse, and catch up with their barn friends. While the barn can act as an escape from day-to-day obligations and chores, it’s important to remember that there...
