Broussard Farrier Services

Broussard Farrier Services 35+ years experience in the traditional farrier trades combined with a modern, therapeutic approach. Science based horseshoeing that puts horses first.

My love affair with horses became a reality in the spring of 1973 in the form of a horse named Joe. He was a 3 year old pound-puppy of a horse, most likely part Quarterhorse, and I was an unruly ten year old kid. We were a perfect match. I used to love watching the farriers come out to the stables and shoe the horses, and I would stand right in the way and ask a million questions of that poor fel

low who patiently shoe'd mine. By age 16, me and Joe had grown some, and I enrolled in a farrier science class at school. The rest is history... I've been shoeing and trimming horses pretty much all over the country since then. Every horse teaches me something new, and every day is another chance to improve. Horseshoeing has changed a lot since 1978, when I first opened up shop, and I do my best to keep up with the technology, but the horses are still horses and I still love to keep em shod.

We were happy to be back at work today after the storm, but we didn't get as much done as we'd hoped. Sometimes circumstances just don't align. Cue tree work, aka limbs falling from the tree, wood chipping and then the loudest one, the stump eater! The horses were sure they were going to get eaten alive!😱 So..we will come back next week, try again.

It was a beautiful day to be out working, especially after the deluge we've had over the last few days! Whew! The horses are muddy and cooped up, but so happy to see the sun! Here are pics of some of today's horses.

We are out here in Sloughhouse working with these beauties today. We had our three regulars, then were able to be of service to a visiting horse as well. He'd had his shoes pulled for radiographs during a prepurchase exam,, so we were able to help get his shoes back on when that was done. It's always nice to pinch hit when possible so the horse can get right back to work.

We worked on these two today, Gunner and Tyler. Both have specific shoeing prescriptions per their veterinarian. We always enjoy these cases, as seeing the hoof morphology improve over time, and seeing the changes in the comfortability and movement of the horse, well, it's a good feeling to be part of the process.

Happy Saturday, folks! We started off in the fog with some donkeys, which, in my opinion is an awesome way to start the day! Of course I didn't plan to end up with a finger bandage, but fingers sometimes get mistaken for cookies when your hands are too cold, lol. Our next stop was Far West, where we worked with some more cuties.

We spent the day with our regular crew at Valcheck Farms, (Luther, Ruby, and the Twin Bays) with the added bonus of radiographs done by Dr Morgan V on Bam Bam. It's nice to see her in action! (Newly minted, highly skilled veterinarian) Bam Bam came into our care less than a year ago, and we've been making significant changes to his feet, which xrays help keep track of. We finished our day at Sugarland with rhe gorgeous Miss Lily.

We had busy day at the barn! This time of year we do a lot of triaging, as we have so many horses out here, and the weather has been, well, winter, lol
Today was beautiful, so played catch up a bit, and moved some off to next week. That's the benefit of being here every Tuesday, we can always do horses based on their needs, not just because we have an appointment and won't be back for several weeks.

Oohhwee is it windy today! We still got these guys done, thanks to some awesome handlers!

It's a beautiful day to be working outside! It's been a mixed bag today. We trimmed a few donkeys, a mule, some rescues, a mustang, and then did some front shoes on a couple nice quarter horses. It's one of those days when you realize how lucky you are to be living this life. ❤️

We finished up the day at Lakeside with this beautiful boy, Nikko.

It was windy at the barn today! Horses get a little squirrelly when it's windy, so we triaged and put off several until next week. Here are some shots of what we were able to get done.

Our Story

My love affair with horses became a reality in the spring of 1973 in the form of a horse named Joe. He was a 3 year old pound-puppy of a horse, most likely part Quarterhorse, and I was an unruly ten year old kid. We were a perfect match. I used to love watching the farriers come out to the stables and shoe the horses, and I would stand right in the way and ask a million questions of those poor fellows who would patiently shoe mine. By age 16, me and Joe had grown some, and I enrolled in a farrier science class at school. The rest is history... I've been shoeing and trimming horses pretty much all over the country since then. In 2012 I married Leslie who quickly became an avid horsewoman in every aspect. With a degree in Nursing, she brings a level of care to our little team that just fits. Every horse teaches us something new, and every day is another chance to improve. Horseshoeing has changed a lot since 1978, when I shod my first horse, and Leslie and I do our best to keep up with the science and technology, but horses today are still horses and we still love keepin em shod.
