Let's do everything possible to keep our furry friends safe and comfortable this 4th of July! Here are some pet safety tips to follow:

-Do not apply sunscreen or insect repellent to a pet unless it is specifically labeled as pet-safe
-Keep fireworks, glow sticks, and kebab skewers out of reach of pets
-Leave pets at home and indoors and set up a designated "safe space" for them
-Make sure your pet's ID/Microchip information is up-to-date and make sure guests are aware of any pets in the home since doors will be opening & closing throughout the day
-Keep pets away from hot grills and open flames
-Check all gates and fences to make sure they are closed and secure
-Stay alert for signs of overheating/pet heat stroke
-Avoid feeding table scraps to pets, many human foods are toxic to dogs

As a reminder, South Ridge Animal Clinic will be closed on Thursday, July 4th! We will re-open on Friday morning at 7:30am.

There is a new medication available that we are very excited about! Librela offers long-lasting pain relief with a once-a-month injection administered by your vet. ๐Ÿพ

Osteoarthritis (OA), or arthritis, is a painful chronic condition of the joints. Pain from OA can severely affect the health and well-being of your dog. Although we canโ€™t cure OA, we can control the pain it causes, which can help your dog be more active and improve their overall quality of life. ๐Ÿพ

Ask us if Librela might be right for your canine friend! ๐Ÿพ

Katie is the Practice Manager here at South Ridge and she received her Veterinary Technician degree from Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology in Colorado in 2012. She is great at what she does and she keeps the clinic running smoothly, which we are so thankful for!

Katie keeps track of every species in which she has placed an IV catheter, a list that includes exotic animals such as a capuchin monkey, opossum, walrus, and ferret.

April is heartworm awareness month!

๐ŸฆŸ Heartworm disease is a serious & potentially fatal disease in pets that is carried/transmitted by mosquitos. It's caused by worms that live in the affected pets' heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. This can cause severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs in the body.

๐Ÿ’— In the early stages of the disease, many dogs show few or no symptoms at all. Signs of heartworm disease later on may include a persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue, decreased appetite, and weight loss. Heartworm disease is a serious, progressive disease. The earlier it is detected, the better the pet's chances to recover.

๐ŸฆŸ All dogs should be tested annually for heartworm infection, which can be done during a routine veterinary visit. Year-round heartworm prevention is important, and there are many preventative options available. Cats are also susceptible to heartworm disease, and the medication used to treat heartworm infections in dogs cannot be used in cats. This means that prevention is the only means of protecting cats from the effects of heartworm disease.

๐Ÿ’—Ask your veterinarian which heartworm preventative may be best for your pet. Many options are available, and it can be as easy as giving 1 chewy monthly!

March 17th-23rd is Poison Prevention Week! Now is a great time to go through your house/garage and store away or secure anything that your pet might be able to ingest if they are left unattended.

Shown here are some common toxins (this is not a complete list) that have negative effects on dogs and cats when ingested or exposed to. If you think or know that your pet may have gotten into something toxic, or even if you are unsure, please contact your Veterinarian right away. Some may be only mildly toxic while others may cause severe illness or even death so it is important to seek Veterinary care or advice quickly.

ASPCA has a poison control helpline that is available 24/7 and 365 days a year as a resource for animal poison-related emergencies (APCC may apply a consultation fee). You can reach this helpline at 888-426-4435.

๐Ÿพ Something we see in veterinary medicine quite often are signs & symptoms of allergies in pets. Allergies can present in many ways, but the most common signs are itchy skin, ear infections, licking of the feet/paws, and hives. In more extreme allergic reactions, facial swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or anaphylaxis are noted.

๐Ÿพ We all know how bothersome symptoms of allergies can be, especially environmental allergies during the changing of seasons. Luckily, there are many different treatment options for our furry friends to help keep them comfortable.

๐Ÿพ If you notice signs of allergies in your pet, contact your veterinarian to make an appointment. As allergies progress, they can cause other problems like secondary infections and hot spots, which require further treatment such as a course of antibiotics or antifungal medication.

๐Ÿพ If your pet is ever experiencing more severe symptoms such as facial swelling or trouble breathing, contact your veterinarian right away or go to your nearest emergency veterinary clinic.

Year-round flea and tick prevention for your pets is so important, especially around this time of year!

๐ŸŒฟ Fleas can be carried by many different wild animal hosts, such as foxes, raccoons, birds, and rodents, and can easily jump onto you or your pet as you walk by. Symptoms of flea bites in dogs include itching and scratching, flaky skin, redness, scabs, hot spots, and hair loss. Fleas are also a common cause of both anemia and tapeworms in dogs.

๐ŸŒฟ Ticks prefer humid and shady environments, especially areas with woods, shrubs, and tall grasses. Each tick species is known to transmit specific infectious diseases, including but not limited to Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

๐ŸŒฟ There are many different options available for flea and tick prevention! Please contact us or your veterinarian if you have questions about which preventative might be best for your pet.

Meet the staff! ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿพ Rachel is one of our Licensed Veterinary Technicians here at South Ridge and she graduated from Northeast Community College with her degree in 2019.

Not only is Rachel an incredibly skilled Vet Tech, but she is also the Queen of DIY projects and loves learning new ways to create! Rachel can almost always be found spreading positive vibes throughout the clinic (we believe this to be fueled from her love of drinking coffee at any hour of the day). ๐ŸคŽ

It's time to meet the staff! Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing members of our amazing staff here at South Ridge Animal Clinic. ๐Ÿค

First up is our amazing Groomer Torrie! ๐Ÿงผ๐Ÿฉ Torrie has been grooming for almost TEN years and is fantastic at what she does. She is fear-free certified and enjoys continuing her education by taking classes on subjects such as dermatology, parasitology, and cat grooming. Her favorite part about grooming is the opportunity to build relationships and trust with not only the pets but with owners as well.

The weather is finally warming up, which means our pets will be spending more time outdoors! Now is a great time to consider microchipping your furry friend. If your dog or cat were ever to get lost or stolen, a microchip can provide proof of ownership and increase the chances of them being reunited with you. โ˜€๏ธ

A microchip is a small chip that is implanted under the skin and can be placed during a routine veterinary visit (no anesthesia is required). When an animal is found and taken to a shelter or clinic, one of the first things staff will do is scan for a microchip. If a microchip is present, they can enter the chip number in a database and find the registered owner information. ๐Ÿ’ป

If you are unsure if your pet has a microchip, or if you would like to schedule an appointment to have a microchip placed please contact us! We are happy to help. ๐Ÿˆ

You may wonder why general anesthesia is required for a dental procedure for your pet. There are many different reasons! Anesthesia makes it possible and much safer to perform dental procedures, cleanings, and extractions with less stress and pain for your pet. A thorough examination as well as diagnostics such as bloodwork and a pre-surgical ECG can help us determine the safest anesthetic protocol for your pet. ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฉบ
