We hope everyone is staying warm and cozy now that winter is really kicking off! We loved getting a visit from the adorable Chupa in her warm winter gear! It's a great reminder to make sure our pets are protected from the elements this season. Here are some Winter Pet Safety Tips and Reminders:

-Jackets can provide extra warmth when spending time outside or on walks. Paw protection such as booties or balm are another helpful tool to create a barrier between paw pads and irritating materials like ice and rock salt.

-Keep in mind that pets are susceptible to frostbite just like humans. It is possible for frostbite to occur when the outdoor temperature is below 32°F with prolonged exposure.

Signs of frostbite include skin discoloration, pale skin, cold to touch, blistering, low body temperature (hypothermia), and pain to affected area. It most commonly effects extremities and body parts furthest from the heart such as an animal's ears, paws/toes, tail or nose.

That's why it's best to keep winter outdoor time limited to 15 minutes or less at a time, as well as allowing your pets to warm up indoors after being dried off with a towel or rag.

-Be sure to keep hazardous chemicals like anti-freeze stored properly and safely away from pets and children. Anti-freeze can taste sweet to dogs and cats, but is highly toxic and should never be ingested. If you suspect your pet has ingested anti-freeze, call our clinic or the closest veterinary emergency facility right away. You may also consult the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline at: (888)426-4435.
