We had an absolute blast working with JH Horsemanship again!šŸ¤©

We introduced Nikki and Daisy to working the cows and they loved it! We took it slow and by the end of it they were both confident and having fun! Jacob was great about coaching us where we were at and helping guide the horses at their pace!

Thanks for a fun day and we will be back again with some more ponies!

I did not write this but it's 100% accurate in every single way.

What no one tells you about owning a horse boarding facilityā€¦.

ā€¢Itā€™s loving someone elseā€™s animal so much it hurts at times.
ā€¢Itā€™s noticing and addressing the slightest change in a horseā€™s behavior, eating, or drinking habits.
ā€¢Itā€™s staying up all night to monitor someone elseā€™s horse when they arenā€™t feeling well.
ā€¢Itā€™s an overwhelming feeling of guilt when a horse gets hurt or sick; even though there was nothing you could have done differently to prevent it.
ā€¢Itā€™s facility overhead. Thereā€™s ALWAYS something that needs fixed or updated.
ā€¢Itā€™s having a camera roll full of cute, silly pictures of horses you donā€™t own.
ā€¢Itā€™s eating Taco Bell 3 nights in a row because itā€™s the only place still open when you finish chores at 11pm and youā€™re starving.
ā€¢Itā€™s unplugging/plugging in water tank heaters several times throughout the day/night to try and keep the electric bill from quadrupling.
ā€¢Itā€™s an overwhelming feeling of anguish for weeks on end when you have to tell boarders that the cost of board must go up.
ā€¢Itā€™s working on every holiday, birthday, anniversary, and sick day.
ā€¢Itā€™s a constant feeling of guilt for not spending enough time with your own animals.
ā€¢Itā€™s wondering if you pay your wonderful help enough, even though they make more per hour than you do most days.
ā€¢Itā€™s getting to know horses even better than their owners do, in some ways.
ā€¢Itā€™s rearranging family, work, and personal commitments to take care of horses.
ā€¢Itā€™s dreaming about that bathroom remodel youā€™ve always wanted, but getting new fencing installed instead.

Boarding horses is so much more than feeding, watering, and cleaning stalls. It isnā€™t for the faint of heart and it surely isnā€™t for anyone looking to get rich. It takes a village of people with a special place in their hearts for equines. To anyone that can relate, just know that you ARE APPRECIATED! šŸ“ā¤ļø

One of the biggest misconceptions in the horse world is that ā€œspurs are meant to add speedā€ or that ā€œspurs are bad/harmfulā€

Spurs were designed to fine tune your horse, add specific buttons and for lateral movementā€¦ not speed . Using them for speed is when you experience the not so great side of spurs.

Like all tools in the horse trainer/ riders tool box itā€™s the hands they are in that determine the outcome. Hence any tool can be good or bad.

Proper fitment, proper knowledge and proper use allows Spurs to be a great tool for trainers and some ridersšŸ”„

"Thereā€™s two things that are, to me, the most important and thatā€™s butt-in-the-saddle time and getting help from the right people.

There are a lot of people out there who are willing to help. Sometimes you have to pay for it, but I think itā€™s really important. But, like I said, the ā€˜rightā€™ help. I always tell people to pick someone you look up to, or maybe someone who is built similar to you, or someone you aspire to ride like or maybe you have a similar style to, because there are a lot of ways to do it and a lot of ways to win.

For me personally, I always ride the hindquarters of a horse and I look back at videos from high school on my good horses and thatā€™s how I rode even then. Thatā€™s whatā€™s natural for me. Just like a horse goes back to whatā€™s natural to them, we go back to whatā€™s natural for us. So, if I can pick someone who has a similar style to me and who I look up to and who has good horsemanship or maybe that wins a lot or that I appreciate something about what they do, thatā€™s the kind of people I like to go to. Watch videos, get on YouTube, do whatever, but just get help from the right people.

Then, spend a lot of time in the saddle. Getting help is good, but thereā€™s also trial-and-error and figuring out your own way a little bit and getting a feel for a horse, which requires a lot of butt-in-the-saddle time.ā€ ā€” Ashley Schafer

Let horses move past their ā€œstoryā€

When youā€™re in the thick of it, the story is real. The behaviors can be explained by a past, near or far. Some of it may be valid, some may be our interpretation, some may be best guesses. Either way, here we are.

But horses have a strong desire to be balanced. If given half a chance, most of them, Iā€™ve found, adapt. Some need a little more help, some have a missing ingredient that helps them complete the recipe of wellness. But usually, people are in the way.

Iā€™ve been that person too. Itā€™s easy. You tell the story over and over - ā€œshe was traumatized.ā€ ā€œYou wonā€™t be able to catch her, she hates men.ā€ ā€œShe doesnā€™t trailer.ā€ ā€œShe had an accident while tying so she doesnā€™t tie.ā€ These things may have been true at one time, but without adapting our awareness to the current moment day by day, moment by moment, we so often keep the horses progress stifled.

I canā€™t tell you how many troubled horses Iā€™ve had that I tip toed around, told the public to watch out, and one day discovered them calmly standing. Before my very eyes they had turned into another horse, and I was so busy talking about them I hadnā€™t noticed who they were now.

~I read this morning from a Trainer I follow and was immediately convincted. I do this so often thinking the past and understanding it will help me with their training but really it may be better to pretend they are a clean slate and while with grace and understanding treat them like a normal horse.
